  • I love blogging and have a regular weekly blog about all aspects of communication. But how do I encourage people to read and more importantly maybe sign up for it? I promote through Twitter and my Facebook page but don’t understand how to attract people beyond that or indeed I don’t know if people read it at all I could do with some expert advice.

  • @quicklearn That is the holy grail of blogging! How do I get my blog recognized? The answer is complex I am afraid is not easy without some effort on your part.

There is so much content out there that you need to raise above all that noise and be heard. Today, it is like a stream never ending just running seemingly endlessly. We jump in and jump out whenever we fancy take what we need and let the stream flow by.

Find your industry pain points and write about those. Identify who are the players in your industry. What are they writing about? Who is following them? You need to see who your competitors are who is linking to them.

Once you have the data you’ll have a mountain of ideas to begin writing some compelling blog pieces. Try posting these daily (Tip:use an editorial calendar). It is proven the more you post the better.
Another tactic would be to guest blog. Write some compelling articles for others, position yourself as the expert and over time you will be that go to expert that will drive traffic-sales.

  • @quicklearn, the other thing to try is to grow your network. Use these three steps:

    1) Like @ptwylie said, find your industry’s players and influencers, and then make sure you follow them. In fact, follow anyone in your industry or field on Twitter and Facebook, if appropriate. Use tools like Twellow.com to find them (Twellow is a tool that searches Twitter bios. Search for your field in it.)

    2) Leave comments on the influencers’ blog posts when they write about what you write about. Make sure they’re smart, intelligent comments, and not just “nice post!” or “well done.” Talk about why you liked the post or not, and offer some additional valuable information.

    3) Write your own blog posts about what the influencers and other network members are writing about. When you find a great blog post, write one that refers back to it. That will make the other writer feel good, but also let them know you’re paying attention. They may even return the favor for you, which will send their readers in your direction.

  •  @erikdeckers I have to agree.  I started a blog on Life, Stress and Humor in December and wanted to get a good audience so that I could start using it for business.  I have been finding others that blog about similar things and other things that I am interested in.  If it makes me smile or laugh I let them know why.  If it touches my heart I tell them why.  If it is something I feel strongly about I tell them and usually only if I agree.  If I disagree and feel the need to comment I usually start out with “You have stated your point clearly, but I must disagree.”  I then tell them why without name calling or negative comments.  I then thank them for there willingness to share.

I sent emails to my friends and family inviting them to read my blog.  Some of started following but most have not.  I have also started talking about what I am writing about with those in my inner circle.  I only have about 44 followers, but I think that is quite a few for a beginning bloger in only 3 or 4 months.  I am still working out what gets the most hits, but I seem to be doing better.

You can find my post at http://www.myoxisamoron.wordpress.com.  Post the link to yours and I will come check it out.

  • hey @erikdeckers “good answer” :)

  • The WordPress community can be tight and fearless.  These folks (WP advocates) will go to the mat for the platform if any derogatory or even suggestions for other platforms are mentioned, many times.

You can play off this tight knit community by wandering through WordPress Blogs. Follow as many as you can find that pertain to the same type of business you have, make intelligent comments that add VALUE to any blogged article. This can be a fun activity; a learning process; and help you discover how others are gaining popularity for their blogs.

As @quicklearn already stated, interaction with other blogs will help you with yours.

One last item you may want to try out – If you are a twitter lover, give either paper.li or the tweeted times a go. THIS can bring new followers to your twitter-verse and possibly readers who will look forward to your blog posts.  I have a website here: Buddy Bulletin and a blogger blog here: Buddy Bulletin Blog to help me broadcast the newspapers. I have my newspapers set to update at 1:00 am daily so fresh content is aggregated each and every day from my followers at Twitter.  The flagship paper.li newspaper is here: The Buddy Bulletin.

Just as an example, I have 10 paper.li newspapers (the max allowed) and one tweeted times.  I gain new followers every day from utilizing these platforms.

From one twitter account, I broadcast for my clients as well, their businesses, blogs, sales, etc. so have a fairly diversified following. Not too big to be unmanageable as yet, but Hoot Suite is my choice for management of twitter streams.

I said all that say this: Advertising your blog posts is mandatory and wherever you do that, do it to the max allowed without irritating your followers.
Build relationships with any platform. Once people know YOU, they will want to read what you have to say.

I asked a similar question a few days ago and Kristi Hines wonderfully directed me to a few links and former blogs:
