How to deal with spam comments? (24 posts)

  • I started Blogging and at first I was pleased with the comments I got. To soon after I found that they where all spam comments.
I use WP as my blog platform I have askismit in place but I still get so many spam comments. I have not posted in about three month now because of it.
It is very frustrating when you see the comments what can I do to get more engagement, or find out which are real and which are spam?

  • @edueck  I am sure that is more than frustrating, hopefully someone in here has resolved this problem with some simple technique that you can adapt.  Good Luck.!!

  • @dave-mackay:
Thanks I think I’m going to need luck.

  • @edueck I am sure that within the next day or two that someone will post a solution. There are some pretty astute bloggers posting here and they must have methods to resolve this. I do not use WP so I can offer nothing to help. sorry

  • @edueck – I’m on Blogger, but I imagine WordPress works the same way — you can go into your comments settings and make it more difficult for spammers to spam you in comments. I think there is a way to change it so that they have to fill in one of the Captcha boxes (where they have to type in the letters they see in the box). Also, there may be a way to not accept any comment that has a web address in it. If someone does post a comment with a web address on my site, I remove it, because the reason they include the web address is to get your readers to click on it (to spam them or get their email address). I real person should be able to complete your comments box even if you set it to be more difficult to complete.

  • There is a plugin called Akismet (free) that you might find helpful.

  • I usually copy some of the sentence and then do a Google search with quotation marks around it.

    Example: “spam comment text”

  • I have askismet, but all they do is show me how many comments I have.
Now grant I may not know how to use askismet, there maybe some things that I have to do, I don’t know.

  • One more thing, how many words makes for a good blog post?
I have read between 500-700 or can you have less or more? I guess that would depend what the post is about right?.

  • @rushtipsThe spam comments I get are so full of urls YOU know that they are spam.

  • I may be in a way over my head here. lol Some backlink seeking software is set up to locate WordPress blogs that allow ‘do follow’ links. So you may have to check what sort of links you have been allowing.

And you may have to disallow the links completely, disallow HTML .have no place where a url can be placed…

    Or disallow comments.

I think you have to keep posting as the search engine will forget you are there and you will lose many weeks.

I think the length of the post should be longer than 350 words and there is not necessarily an upper limit except that the search engine may get tired of reading after 500 or 600 words and that extra content may not get indexed.

  • @dave-mackay Thanks for the reply I will give it a try and see what gives, my post are from 400 to 900 words I maybe a bit long winded ha ha but this way they are not all the same. I did a post on budgeting called: Don’t kick the piggy bank if you google it it may show up in my blog site, it did for me.

  • @kathybernard I did my snooping. you have a lovely site on Blogger, not only informative and full of good content, it is really nicely organized.

  • Thanks, Dave! I appreciate your nice comments.

  • @kathybernard I have a couple Blogger sites…. and they are nowhere near as nice as your site. My friend is employed by a social agency that helps people to locate employment, I am pretty sure that they will be using your site as a resource for their clients within a week.

  • That would be great. Please do spread the word. I’m not the best at making money at the blog (monetizing and such), but I do so enjoy helping people.

  • Sorry for the shameless self promotion but I wrote a blog post about cutting out the spam that I think would really help :)

    http://bloggingwizard.com/from-800-spam-comments-a-day-to-0/

I’d love to know if my suggestion works for you.

    Thanks,Adam

  • Thanks Adam: I will try that, I suck at installing things on my site.
I can try at least once lol

  • @edueck I’m of the opinion that not all spam is bad. When you have a few trickle through the plug ins, you know that your site is visible and working. 800 spams a day … Bad. 2 spams a day … Tolerable.

  • Pat Flynn is a very successful marketer. His blog gets hammered by the spammers daily, however, because the blogs get so much valuable and helpful discussion he seems to tolerate the spam and patiently moderate the posts. He gets hundreds of good conversations on his posts and all the nice people go to his site and buy something because he is such a cool guy. There could be good things about spam. I don’t know because I do not have that situation.

I was wondering if you have do follow links or do not follow links  on your blog, perhaps they are looking for do follow links.

  • @amyhallbiz I guess you could say I’m lucky to only have had from1800 – 2400 in one month lol I still think that was to many. I haven’t up dated my blog for three month and I still get around 100 per week (I must have a great blog) ha ha

  • @edueck No problem at all, if you need any help let me know!

  • I want to thank everybody for their comments and reply’s to my post.
I still have to find my voice on my blog, this is something I am struggling with. There are so many things I could write about but then it’s a one time post and it’s a while before I can come up with something new to add to it.

I want to get to the point where I work from home or at home as I am getting to the point where the hours at the job are not for me.
I have some minor heath issues and I want to enjoy my later years with early retirement not working till the day I drop.

I see people struggling after 60 to make ends meet and I don’t want to be one of them.in a few years I could be on early retirement but I don’t want to wait that long. The lottery isn’t paying off yet so I still have to concern my self with employment (darn) but I guess that’s life.

    Again: Thanks

  • I am not receiving my dividend cheques from the lottery either. lol. I wonder if you can blog about some hobbies and interests that you may have. I can understand the  feeling of no topics, I am sure that we all endure that one. You might do a search on the net for ‘blog topics’, ‘blog headlines’, ‘blog titles’, and that may give you some ideas.
