How Often Should I Blog? (15 posts)

  • My company started a blog and want me to write two posts a day to increase traffic and awareness.  I think I should be writing an article once a day or even three times a week.  Quality vs. Quantity!  What do you think? Other tasks are really starting to suffer!

  • @wendievan do 2 posts per day if they will lift some of the stuff off your plate.

But honestly, once a day is A LOT even for professional bloggers. Three times a week would be plenty.

Of course, this depends on what your employer does and how competitive the market is. If it’s highly competitive, then daily is not out of the question. If it’s a little less so then 3 times is plenty.

The rule of thumb I use (and tell my clients) is: the more content you publish (post) the better, BUT do NOT make it a big deal. twice a month is just fine if that’s the schedule that works best for you.  The important part is just getting started.  You can do one liner to one paragraph updates, in fact that might even be best since people don’t really like reading a lot anyway. Hope this helps :-)

  • @erikdeckers @devanianjali  Thanks for the quick feedback, very helpful.  I work for an i-gaming company in Malta, so the competition is heavy, but not any more so than any other industry, imo.  I’ve always been a firm believer that it is the content that makes people come back, quality content.  One thing I can do straight-away is limit each post to 250-300 words, but sometimes that isn’t always that easy to do.

  • @wendievan – You are so right. I do social media and marketing for a company that produces fitness products, and like your industry, the fitness industry is HUGE and HIGHLY saturated, so I know exactly what you’re dealing with. For fitness, not only is there so much competition, but if you’re not a celebrity (like Jillian Michaels etc..) then you’re virtually not as credible. So one thing we have to focus on is not really finding content, but creating it in a way that is new, fun, enjoyable to read and share.  That’s where the bulk of our work is.

  • @wendievan Limiting the post length is a definite help. But in a highly competitive industry like yours, quantity IS pretty important. So once a day may not be so insane. It might be a good idea to block out time and write several at once. That should save you some time each day as well.

  • @wendievan I agree with @erikdeckers about setting aside a block of time and writing a number of posts in one sitting.

Pick a theme and limit each post to one very specific topic within that theme. You’ll be pleased to see how your thoughts flow from topic to topic within the theme, creating content much more quickly than if you did one post at a time.

Another quick post idea: list one frequently asked question and post your response. Repeat for any number of frequently asked questions.

  • @debbielynnava That is excellent. This is my weakest area, and your tactic sounds real easy to impliment. Most of my posts are How-to’s so they take a lot of research and preperation time to film, screen capture, and transcribe. So I really only get out like 2 a month, if that.

I guess i’ve always thought the answer is blog when you have something to say.

  • @debbielynnava – the FAQ question response rocks!  Why didn’t I think of that?  LOL – thanks Debbie!

  • @jasonwiser and @wendievan Glad I could help. If either of you are commenting on forums, help/answer boards, or other people’s blogs, that content could also be reused in blog posts.

  • Writing quality unique content is tough… There are times after blogging for almost a decade that I am concerned about writing fresh and new stuff. When that happens, I go to my notebook where I keep a running tally of what my clients talk to me about.  I watch what my clients ask about most and take note.

I have what I call my “Three Time Rule”.  If I get asked something once, I make a mental note.  Asked again, I add it to my list of topics to write about — by the third time, I am asked I have an informative article on my site.

When it comes to posting, quality outweighs quantity any day of the week.  So if you are uber busy, pick a day as your “posting day” and stick to that.  Even if you have to preschedule posts due to a busy schedule.  Then your readers look forward and expect to see something from you on that day.

    HTH!

  • @wendievan On the quality content side: I find a way to create refreshing content is to bring scenarios into it every now and then. In other words tell stories, provide illustrations or share a conversation. It’s different from most business blogging styles and can help you connect with an audience in a personal way.   @debbielynnava I agree – writing posts in batches is a really efficient way to get several done.

  • @wendievan At least 2-3 times a week consistently for at least 6 months before you really see some results (according to Rich Brooks presentation I had listened to).You can always have guest bloggers as well. You can also do some Top Ten type of posts when you need content. There’s lots you can do when looking for content.  Here is my write-up on Rich’s presentation:SEO: How do I get people to find me on the web? (Round-up)

  • @cherelleleong Thanks Cherelle, I do try to personalize the posts whenever possible, but a great reminder.

@blogsbyheather Heather, thanks for the link, I love the layout of your site! Very unique.  The “Top Ten” idea is great, and will do that soon.  We just started about two months ago with this new blog.

After posting my question, and reading all the great suggestions, there are two main points of attention for me: shorten my posts and keep some written content ready to post in the event my day becomes so busy that fresh content writing becomes impossible.  Thanks so much for all the great suggestions!
