How important is the layout design and the end look and feel of a blog? (18 posts)

  • Does a blog that is visually appealing and has a specific look and feel that communicates its purpose have an impact of the success of the blog? and Does visual / emotional approach usually give an incentive to users to come back more often which results in more interaction?

  • Now that’s a loaded question! As a blanket statement, I’ll say that the look and feel of a blog is extremely important. The quality and value of the content is number one, but if people can’t find it and read it easily then you might as well be talking to thin air. As for the way it’s designed visually, that should match up with the type of content you’re publishing and the target market you’re aiming for. For example, a corporate look vs. a more casual or feminine one. For getting more interaction, you’ll get lots of advice, but I think that asking questions at the end of posts and being prompt about replying to comments helps a lot. Of course, the content itself is a huge factor in encouraging interaction – e.g., controversial topics are bound to get more comments.

  • Yes, it’s important, but actually coming at it from another direction.

If you have an ugly blog layout, people won’t want to stick around. As a result, your Time On Site will be rather low, and this can have a negative effect on your site’s Google rank.

Plus, if you have a good looking, sleek layout, people automatically assume 1) you’re legitimate, and 2) you know what you’re doing. It’s a good idea to spend a little money to have a good looking blog — even a $20 theme from Woo Themes is worth it.

  • Of-course, very good UI and UX is important and then content on the blog is as well important.  @eddysleiman

  • Of Course! I think it’s extremely important. I find that if a blog is easy to read and easy to navigate, I’m more likely to go back to it often and tell my friends about it. You want a blog that is aesthetically pleasing with equally great content.

  • think about the basics of branding and generally online presence – you want people to stay, people will not stay somewhere that is generally difficult, ugly or untidy

  • I really believe that the content is most important.Second links need be provided
so they can get what your aim is.Third make blog or website site easy to navigate.
So many times i visit a blog and i can not figure out how to navigate with the website.Makes me get upset and leave!Make it easy, people do not what to look around unless that’s is what they are their for. Most are their for a purpose.TO
    BUY,remember to engage,been there done that.I read daily,in my mini days,2 hours.
I simply do not write or sell about any product or service that i personally have used.

  • That’s a bit of a “chicken/egg” question, isn’t it? If it looks great but the content is boring, I definitely won’t be back, but if the content is great and the look is bad, well, I probably won’t be back either :)

So I would say content takes a slight edge over looks, but both are critical. And I agree with everyone that said make the navigation easy, keep it uncluttered, and provide links throughout your posts…

  • I think design and user friendliness is key for a successful blog! I can’t say how annoying I find it if I can’t “find my way” around a blog or site. You need to have a good design to capture people’s eye, and to, as Erik Deckers says, make sure they stick around. I also agree with his point about looking legitimate. Nothing says “sketch” like a bad and cheap looking design. However, you need to make people want to stick around because of content too! :) I guess what I’m trying to say is, intrigue people with great design and “wow” them the first time they look at the blog. Then you need to make it easy to browse around, so they feel they can find their way around. And lastly, make them come back because they like what they read and want more :)
    Good Luck!

  • Everyone has made GREAT & valid points here on this topic.  I feel a site should feel or look appropriate to whatever your business/topic is about.  Not junked up either – I do not stick around if a site is doing more advertising over content.  Which those that are blogging need to make sure their content is of value to those that are stopping by.

    Design is extremely important.

Why? Because appearance matters. (especially for first impressions)

Answer this, would you attend a formal gala in sweats? (I think not)You could be the nicest, more interesting person in the room but nobody would know that because 1. they wouldn’t take you seriously enough to find out and 2. they’d be looking at you like you’re crazy

Make sure you give your blog some TLC and put it’s best self forward.

  • @mutunga

Thank you Dewane. I have personally got your point :-) but I am still not sure about the sweat thing. :-) I am known to have a good sense of humor so don’t be offended :-)

Dear members anyone would like to add his thought or comment on Dewane?

  • @eddysleiman Hi think that blogs have to be easy-on-the-eyes but more so has to be more organized – followers need to be able to find the information they want and quickly. Dropdown/navigation, Category listings and links well organized.

    just my two-cents. LOLHeather :D

  • Interesting discussion. I agree design is very important. I want to change mine. Where do I find a good theme for Blogger? I do not have a WP as yet.

  • @jamericanspice

It is not really about finding a theme as much as creating your own. Try to design your own in order to stand out. the development of your identity and its look and feel will have to be relevant to the content of your blog and should remain neat and friendly to use.

    Cheers!

  • @eddysleiman I agree. That’s why it’s so hard for me to find a design to fit into what I want it to be. I guess I wont, so I should just take your advice and make it my own.

    Thanks :)

  • @jamericanspice

    Good luck!
