How important is Page Rank (8 posts)

  • After being asked by another blogger what Page Rank I was I had to pretend I knew what she was talking about and quickly go and google it. I have a page rank of 2 and I am feeling a little disheartened as the score is out of 10.

Is page rank important enough for me to worry?

  • It’s not THAT important, unless you’re looking to get some cool acclaim or earn some attention from SEO people. PageRank is all about how “good,” in SEO terms, that Google thinks your page is.

It’s actually not a valid rank either, because everyone is clamoring after high PageRank, but Google pays more attention to TrustRank, a ranking they don’t discuss. It has to do more with how commercial vs. reliable and honorable a website is. A site with a lot of ads and spam-like links on it may very well have a high PageRank, but a very low TrustRank.

  • Agreed. The hush, hush topic of TR falls in line with the constant algorithm changes Google introduces (what seems like a monthly basis). This as you know is to try and keep the relevancy of a websites content high in the rankings to match what people are searching for.

    Hi Emma,

PageRank is actually based off the quality and quantity of links to your site. Although quality trumps quantity any day of the week.  It’s more of an indicator of how popular your website is in terms on links.  The quality of the links to your site are what matter in terms of SEO.

With the changes to Google’s algorithm to include social ranking signals I doubt that PageRank (in it’s current form at least) will even be around much longer.

Focus on tracking real metrics like traffic, CTR (click-thru rate), leads/conversions, bounce rate, etc.

  • Check out this article from SEOmoz, it should provide some clarifying insights:

  • Page rank is so important Google have taken to updating it once every six months.

  • The link from @lukaspleva does a very good job of explaining the difference between Toolbar PageRank (which we mere mortals can see) and “real” PageRank (which no one outside the Googleplex knows, no matter what any “PageRank Checker” software or service might claim). If anyone is confused about the difference, or didn’t know there was a difference, I highly recommend watching that video or reading the transcript. Thanks for sharing the link, Lukas!

While Toolbar PageRank may be useful for giving some general indications about what Google sees and thinks about your site’s links, it has nothing to do with actual rankings. IMO, it’s best to think of it as one (relatively minor) tool in your arsenal when you set out to evaluate your site’s overall “seo health.” Something to note in passing, but nothing to worry about or obsess over. :)

  • @therealsupermum PageRank is only important for people who are trying to sell advertising links (something that you’re not supposed to do).  Your average website visitor probably doesn’t even know what PageRank is, or even how to check it.

The most important thing you need to worry about when it comes to search engines is your keyword rankings.  If you want website visitors to find you when they search the keyword “mommy blog” then knowing where you rank in search engines for that keyword phrase and working to improve it is more important than your PageRank.

That said, it takes links to improve your rankings for particular keywords, and when you build links, you’ll naturally boost your PR.  And if you are seeking advertisers, the legit ones usually come in based off of your traffic because they want exposure for their ad to your audience.  If you’re getting 100K views per month, they won’t care about your PageRank either.
