How do you get your WordPress Blog on your website hosted by GoDaddy? (25 posts)

  • I get my domains through GoDaddy.com.  But I am starting my blogging through WordPress.  How do I get my Blogs on WordPress to appear on my GoDaddy website.  GoDaddy seems so proprietary that I can’t figure it out.  Also, I don’t want to buy the WordPress website name.  Can I use DNS or is there some plug in available or another way to do it?

  • Let me see if I understand. Your blog is on WordPress.com, and you want a link from your GoDaddy website to your WordPress.com blog. Is that it?

  • @nilminiklur  If I were you I would set up WP.org on your GoDaddy domain and just start blogging right on that domain. If you want older posts from WP.com to appear on the new domain you’ll probably have to manually copy & paste, but I think it’s worth the trouble.

  • @nilminiklur I typed a lengthy answer to your question and then deleted it because I don’t want to steer you in the wrong direction.

I highly recommend adding @kristi-hines to your message/question because she uses Go Daddy and WP. Also, this article that she authored may help: http://kikolani.com/how-to-start-a-wordpress-blog.html

  • @nilminiklur If you’re looking to direct a domain you purchased on Godaddy to a WordPress.com blog, then you should be able to do it following the directions here.

    http://support.godaddy.com/help/5182

If you’re installing WordPress software onto your domain, you need to purchase hosting and then go to the Godaddy Hosting Connection area – then you can install WordPress as an application on your domain in a few clicks.  :)

@karenataylor Thanks for sharing my post!  :)

  • @nilminiklur  You don’t!!! GoDaddy sucks for hosting! Get a real hosting service like Bluehost or HostGator. C-panel hosting is best for a WordPress site, not the sucky proprietary GoDaddy hosting dashboard.

  • @Amyhallbiz I agree. I had terrible problems with GoDaddy hosting when I first started out. Granted, that was in the early days of WP but they lost my trust.

Just wondering, GoDaddy is pushing their Wordpress hosting now. Has anyone tried it and had any luck? I’ve got a client who wants to use their “4g Cloud” hosting. I’m trying to steer him away but he’s sold by the gloss of their term “cloud.”

Personally, I think if he wants real cloud hosting their are better places to go but having not tested it myself, I’d love to hear from anyone who has.

With the popularity of WP, and the size of GoDaddy, I just can’t believe they haven’t figured it out by now.

  • I very loudly echo the sentiments of @amyhallbiz and  @jim-lodico    just this week I have total freedom from the Godaddy clutches. I did a full client migration of ove 25 sites away from Godaddy because the are frankly terrible on so many levels!!

Most notably, my sites were really slow, and so i asked tech if there was a problem, they said no, all is well. So i did a reverse DNS lookup on my IP and found that i was on a shared environment with 7,665 other domains! I don’t care how many resources they devoted to that server, 7,665 is insanity!

So i complained again, and the operator / sales rep suggested that my sites were slow because i was on a shared hosting plan and that I should consider moving to a VPN. Mind you, my total monthly bandwidth for 15+ domains was less than 3G.

But before i get too far off topic. Run from Godaddy now while you have the chance. host somewhere else, keep you domains on Godaddy for now, and point the DNS. Then once your sites are in order, move your domains as the come up for renewal.

I will be glad to assist you for free just to help you avoid making a huge mistake getting your business hostage to the Godaddy. Not to mention their idea of reputation management is launching another soft porn made for internet commercial.

  • Thank you so much for the input @Jason Wiser. 7,665 shared domains is insane. I get concerned when I look at my Bluehost accounts and see another 80 sites. I’m pretty sure that is where Bluehost maxes out also and I’ve seen some that don’t have that many.

I will be forwarding your comments to my client. Hopefully I can steer him in another direction.

  • @jim-lodico just have your client do a reverse DNS lookup and they will see how many they have also. I am now with MidPhase and could not be happier!

  • @nilminiklur  ok @erikdeckers asked the most pertinent question and I think he is right. Just tell us exactly what it is you need to do and yes, @kristi-hines post has most everything you will need.

  • In all fairness @glengorham you are correct to suggest that maybe myself,  @jim-lodico, and  @amyhallbiz did not directly answer the question, and I may have said more than i should have. Maybe i too should have excercised restrain like   @karenataylor. But, i am convinced that this is valuable information that is not just random ranting and brand busting without due cause.

It is important to me that my peers here at SME Clubs will be honest and steer me in the right direction, which is why i felt validated in sharing my experience with Godaddy. So forgive me Glen if I have overstepped the etiquette of this forum, but it still believe that my response, though a bit heated, is appropriate to @nilminiklur original question.

  • @glengorham I think this forum is for learning …Kristi had already answered the technical question about how to install on a GoDaddy server, so the next unasked question is, “Is GoDaddy” the best hosting service for a WordPress blog?”. (Sometimes the most important question is not always asked, because they don’t know what they don’t know. So they don’t know what to ask.) The answer is NO! So I see it as my responsibility as an “expert” to make sure that Nilmini knows everything about the topic she’s asking about. If I only answered just her question … I would be stealing from her and being dishonest with her. I think the benefit of this community is that we share our real world experience with each other. DON’T BE STINGY!!

  • @amyhallbiz @jasonwiser @glengorham @jim-lodico @nilminiklur  I just wanted to add for the record that I’ve had issues with GoDaddy, but they’ve always been good about customer service and getting them resolved. I have used two other hosting companies and had worse issues.

The biggest was, in a nutshell, I had some small sites hosted with hosting company to be unnamed.  They were running slow as snails and were down a lot aka, up less than the advertised 99.9%.  During the same time period, I had my main blog which had probably 10 times the traffic on a cheap GoDaddy plan.  The hosting company for my smaller sites told me I needed to upgrade to a much more expensive plan for some small WordPress sites that (in total) probably didn’t have more than 100 visits a day where my main blog with GoDaddy was getting over 1,000.  The hosting company for my smaller sites also questioned whether I was “sure” my sites were really down that often (like I don’t know whether a site is working vs. not working).

In the end, I moved my small sites over to GoDaddy and they have been performing great ever since. Hiccups hear and there, but nothing like what I experience with the other company who wanted me to pay five times more per month than what I was paying with GoDaddy. So while it seems like everyone has problems with them, I typically have more problems with others.

  • @kristi-hines I gotta admit, Godaddy does have the greatest customer support, next to constant contact, of all companies i’ve ever worked with. Curiously, I am now with Midphase and Mail Chimp.

Also, do you have a VPN? or are your smaller sites on a standard shared hosting? I can’t imagine Kikolani is on a shared server. They may have different policy for how they handle Shared and Dedicated customers.

  • @jasonwiser All of my stuff was running on shared accounts at the time I had issues with the other hosting company.  I recently upgraded to a dedicated IP address for Kikolani though, but other than that, it’s still all on shared hosting.  I like to keep things inexpensive as long as possible.  :)

  • Well I think we’ve all voice our experiences and opinions on this one. I do hope  @nilminiklur was able to get something that will help her situation.

@kristi-hines there is a reason Godaddy is as big as they are, and it’s not because everyone has had the same experience as I have. They are doing some things right, i just had a really bad experience after 5 years of being a loyal customer. And they failed to provide me with a satisfactory answer to my situation, so I left.

Nilmini, If we still did not help you let us know.

  • @kristi-hines @jasonwiser  Have either of you tried page.ly for WordPress hosting? I was at a WordCamp this weekend and I heard rave reviews … especially on site speed and cashe-ing. Just wondering. :)

  • @amyhallbiz Haven’t tried them, no.  I’m getting good service now and my last two adventures to other hosting companies didn’t end so well, so I’m staying put.  :)

  • @amyhallbiz haven’t tried it, but looks awesome! And if @yoast recommends it, I’m in. not in a position to test it now though.

  • @jim-lodico I use GoDaddy and they have been hosting my WordPress sites for over 4 years. Like  @kristi-hines, I’ve had a couple problems along the way, but their support has always fixed things in a timely way. I use their 4G cloud solution and I immediately saw faster loads.

  • It takes some digging on Wordpress’s site but they offer a migration/transfer service for about $150. Might be worth it to get it out of the way.

  • @charlene-kingston Glad to know I’m not the only one with good GoDaddy experience.  I was starting to feel like the minority everywhere I went.  :)

  • @kristi-hines GoDaddy seems to be the company people love to hate. I’m very happy with them. In fact, I purchased more services today.

  • @kristi-hines @charlene-kingston It’s kinda odd but now that I posted about my bad experience I’ve been getting calls from GoDaddy. … It could be just a coincidence because I buy all my domain names through GoDaddy.
