How Do You Deal with Trolling? (14 posts)

  • We have a policy on this one, but I would like to hear how you handle trolls. I look forward to interacting with you on this one. It ought to be interesting!

  • #1 Don’t feed the trolls! If you respond they just get more excited. Let your community respond for you before you jump on it and they may very well do better than you can.If a troll goes after your other users, delete the comment, ban their IP and don’t worry about. You have to protect your users first.

  • I fed the troll once. I would approve his comments after editing them. I suppose he was not a good troll because he was bothered and left. Normally, they don’t leave. For me, the best thing was to delete and ignore. I had one that created different accounts and used the secondary accounts to support himself.

  • @donpurdum There’s a bit of a discussion on this over at http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/clubs/blogging/forum/topic/how-do-you-deal-with-trolls/.  It’s hard not to “feed the trolls” – if you feel an emotionally based response coming, it’s best to take a moment away from the keyboard, think about it, then respond.

  • I engage them head on as it is the most amusing part of the internet. Spammers get the ban hammer though.

  • How do you spot a troll? Do you recognize them right off the bat or is it a progression?

  • @annakdonahue Here is an article I wrote on how to spot them and some ideas I have on how to deal with them: http://www.theinternetconference.net/index.php/online-magazine/why-do-troll-jerks-post-on-your-site-and-how-to-stop-them/

@richardmclaughlin – he was probably an unintentional troll. He didn’t know that he was trolling and when you didn’t comply, he left.

  • Great article @donpurdum. Anyone who hasn’t read it yet probably should. It will help keep you sane…

  • I never respond to Trolls.  Frankly, I don’t even approve their comments.  People mistakenly believe that they are have to uphold the First Amendment on their blog.  You have zero obligation to run anyone’s comments.  So don’t let trolls bully you into running their comments.  If you let them on keep the action short, sharp, and specific to the point.

  • @pushingsocial Agreed.  People have the right to say whatever they want, but that doesn’t mean I have to publish it.  I look at my blog as my house – if you’re under my roof, then you have to follow my rules.

  • @donpurdum thanks for the article.  I haven’t had any trolls on my blog yet, but then I’m new to the scene.  I’ve only been blogging since December.  @kristi-hines

@kristi-hines I look at my blog the same way.  If you cannot be polite you may leave.

  • @fawnmorgan – Welcome to the scene! A little patience and some time, and a lot of neat things are sure to happen that you can’t forsee today!

  • I”m with Stanford, I delete with extreme prejudice. What are they going to do, complain?

  • Never had a troll in a my full year of running three blogs. All sugar and spice. People are either scared or nice!
