How do I set up Comment Rules? (11 posts)

  • Hi everyone,

I keep getting comments on my WP.org blog that include links, usually as part of the signature. I’ve been deleting the links and then approving the comment. I’m wondering how to set up Comment Rules so this will stop? Or am I wrong to do this? (Delete the links, not set up comment rules) Should I allow links in Comments?

  • @markoetjens About the only thing you can do is include a sentence or two by your comment form saying what is allowed and what is not allowed.  Most comment forms will allow users to add a link by default – unfortunately, spammers will spam, regardless of what rules you set.  If you’re using WordPress, you can try a plugin called GASP ( http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/growmap-anti-spambot-plugin/ ) that makes people have to check a box to prove they are human and not bots.  This might slow some of your spam down.

  • @markoetjens I once did an informal survey about whether I could/should edit spam comments to remove the links and leave the good stuff in (“this blog post is awesome. I learned so much!”)

Apparently this is a no-no. Too bad too, because I would have looked like the second coming of Ernest Hemingway, according to some of these people.
Ah well. You can read it here.

  • @kristi-hines I tried Growmap, and my readers got a javascript error message saying they couldn’t leave a comment. I had to shut it back off. I even looked at some different fixes, but none of them worked.

  • @erikdeckers Ah, that’s no good.  Did you put something in on the support forums?

  • No, I didn’t. I keep thinking I should pursue it more, but haven’t had time.

  • @kristi-hines @erikdeckers  Thanks for the help. I guess all I can do is let people know that any comment that includes a link will be deleted. BTW Erik, great post.

  • @markoetjens I’m very careful about links in comments. If they add value to the conversation, they stay in. I also have comment luv set up so I can help commenters promote their own work.

You might consider creating a comment policy. I use one, and I explain my rules. It’s my blog and it’s my job to make sure I’ve created and maintained a safe conversation zone for my visitors. By having my policy available for everyone to see, I feel I’m being as transparent as possible about how I moderate comments.

  • @charlene-kingston Your article was exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much. I was wondering where to start and you provided it.

  • @markoetjens Glad I could help.

If you check my blog, you’ll see that I added a statement “By submitting a comment, you agree to abide by our comment policy. Comments from first time participants are moderated.” between the comment box and the submit button.

  • Found the question and answer that I needed. I knew someone must have asked about it already.

I’ll be creating a comment policy for my company’s new website blog and was looking for information to help me get started. @charlene-kingston‘s comment policy article looks like a good place to start. Thanks!
