Help! wp site – robots.txt can’t be found by webmaster (6 posts)

  • Hello,

I have spent too long searching on google what to do … maybe you can help!
“Google couldn’t crawl your site because we were unable to access the robots.txt”
I dont know why this is happening … I am trying to have no crawl errors but then I read that you also dont want google crawling everything because of duplicate content problems … any advice or have you had the same issue and know of a fix?

  • Hey Rob,
Do you have a XML sitemap or seo plugin?

If so, do you have the “No index” No archive” box checked?

This would stop Google from crawling your site.

  • Hi  @reptilerob

Per Wiki: The Robot Exclusion Standard, also known as the Robots Exclusion Protocol or robots.txt protocol, is a convention to prevent cooperating web crawlers and other web robots from accessing all or part of a website which is otherwise publicly viewable. Robots are often used by search engines to categorize and archive web sites, or by webmasters to proofread source code. The standard is different from, but can be used in conjunction with, Sitemaps, a robot inclusion standard for websites.

It sounds complicated but it’s not.  It’s just a protocol to inform google what directories you don’t want them to look in or index.

You can learn more at http://www.robotstxt.org/robotstxt.html

You can generate your own at http://tools.seobook.com/robots-txt/generator/

Since your reptilerob.org uses wordpress you could consider installing a pludin like: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/irobotstxt-seo/

Google actually offers a Robots.txt Generator. You can learn more about that here: http://searchengineland.com/google-offers-robotstxt-generator-13653

Let me know if you have any questions.
    Jules

  • Thank you @glenandrews and @juleswebb

It works now. The sitemap seems to have done the trick!!

I used a plugin called “Google XML Sitemaps”

Yaay, now Google can crawl away.

Thank you both so much for helping out – you made my day :)

  • Awesome Rob, glad you figured it out.

    Good Luck! :)

  • @reptilerob good to hear you got it sorted out!
