Have you used frameworks like Genesis/Thesis? (22 posts)

  • I am planning to buy a framework for my blog. Have you used it? If yes then how effective has it been from SEO point of view.I am not a tech guy and now after a year managing our blog we thought of buying a framework. reason to improve our seo and not to worry about most of the things. so do you think is it good move as we are a bootstrapped startup. It would be great if you can share what are the other benefits for having a framework?

  • @prasantnaidu what do you mean by “framework”? can you give an example link?

  • @prasantnaidu I suggest you give this a read http://kikolani.com/thesis-vs-genesis-comparing-premium-wordpress-themes.html. It’s by @kristi-hines and should give you a good idea what the frameworks will give you.

  • @prasantnaidu and @juleswebb

I think you are referring to what is commonly called a “premium theme.”  In other words, it’s a WordPress theme you pay for.

I use Thesis (theme) on about 15 of my clients’ sites, as well as on a couple of my own sites. Love it. You don’t have to be a coder (which I am not) to set it up.

I’ve recently hired a coder who is familiar with Thesis and can do a lot of cool stuff with it, such as flash-style headers, custom nav bar, and more. We’re going to be developing some affordable packages where we build websites/blogs that use the Thesis theme but take it much farther than what comes out-of-the-box.

Here are links to 3 sites I’ve created recently using Thesis:
    Mountain River Youth Ranch
    Watch God Work
    Challenging Congress

  • @howwhowhen Thanks for sharing that Howie! :)@prasantnaidu I have used both frameworks. They are both strong for SEO – Matt Cutts of Google uses Thesis on his own blog. The main difference I find between the two is the out of the box design. If you like minimalism, or have a designer on hand that can customize around the framework, then Thesis is fine. Genesis offers child themes that you can buy with the framework for only a bit more than Thesis. The child themes are great out of the box designs. My post that Howie shared goes into more detail about both. Hope it helps in your decision making!

Thanks for the clarification. Templates is the word I guess I would use. I’m a web developer and I use “framework” in the context of something like a css framework or javascript framework.

I looked at the sites you created using Thesis and you did a very nice job.

  • We use Thesis for all the sites we build for authors.  My partner actually builds the sites.  The SEO is great and it allows for the blogs to be fed to social media profiles.  I encourage all our author clients to have a independent Wordpress Blog instead of having it hosted on Wordpress for this reason.  Also Thesis makes it easy for them to update their blogs themselves.  A lot of the authors are great writers but some of them lack technology skills.  We love the framework.

  • @laurachristianson

Loved your three examples, especially the first. The second was a good example for me, as I need that third column for “stuff,” lol.

    @janisfriesler

Janis, thanks for sharing your work with authors using Thesis. I need something easy for others to update, too. Although I was leaning toward Kristi’s recommendation of the other one, for this one kinda-group project I’m developing, I definitely need something I can start, then hand over to a no-techy, but good writer so they can update it for themselves.

  • @atlantarobin Robin – One of the reasons I like Thesis is that you can easily adjust the columns — you can have 1, 2, or 3 (standard) and do even more fun things with them if you have coding skills. You can also change the width of each column. So, for instance, you can make one sidebar wider than the other.

And, as with all WordPress sites, you can click the blog page on or off with the click of a button.  Slick!

  • @juleswebb Jules – Ha! I get “framework” but the average (and even above average) website user has no idea what that means. Most people also don’t understand “theme,” so “template” is a good descriptor.

Thank you for your compliments about our Thesis sites. My graphic designer creates custom headers and favicons for them, which makes them unique and more professional looking.

I love their Multimedia Box where you can place videos, rotating or static images, or custom HTML.

I’m excited to work with my programmer to see what else we can make Thesis do.

  • @laurachristianson

Theme, template, framework — English is a funny little game sometimes. I used to use a program called Framemaker for large volume or heavy duty editing and layout needs for Scientific Games’ technical documentation. Recently, someone asked if I was a Frame-Maker, but they were talking about a completely different thing. The computer world is terrible for using similar terms and identifiers for completely different things. I make it a constant practice to always ask what someone means before I say something stupid… but hardly ever catch my mistake in time, lol. Honestly, I first clicked on this Forum to find out what they meant by “framework.” Glad I did. This was very informative.

  • Not to muddle things, but another theme you might want to consider is Headway – that is the theme I’ve used for my site.  I originally started with Thesis but moved over to Headway and I’ve been happy.

That said, some of the Genesis skins look great as well so if you see exactly what you want there than maybe go for it.

  • @prasantnaidu I would like to give an example here:

For example, if you need to create a Microsoft Office file then you normally go and buy a Microsoft office package

You don’t need to worry about the codding at the back etc because Microsoft has done the testing etc.

Similarly, when it comes creating your website you normally have 2 choices:

    1. Spend huge amount of money and get all the coding done from a developer (Even though the quality of your website depends on coder’s capabilities etc)

    2. Buy a already tried and tested frame work and customise it yourself or pay some one a small amount to customise your site as you like.

We have recently done that with our company website. You can see the link below:
    All Marketing Solutions

We are using Genesis on our and for client sites.

You can see our company site to check, how we did a complete customisation of one of the Child Theme.

    Hope this will help :)

  • @prasantnaidu Mine is from Elegant Themes, but I plan to use Genesis this coming year, as I have used it more than once on clients WordPress sites and am ready for a change on mine. The support is great with Elegant Themes, btw. At the same time, to be honest, they’ve had bugs with their theme sliders, and I’ve had to change from a theme I that liked because the bug was never dealt with propertly.

I am drawn a bit by the fact that you can use Genesis on an unlimited number of sites.

I read the post @howwhowhen mentioned when I found it on a search engine a month ago and enjoyed the comparison. Nice to meet the author @kristi-hines.

  • I love Thesis, I use it on my business blogs and the SEO aspect is exceptional. I also use Genesis on my personal blog and that’s cool too.

We have just moved my main blog (Birds) to a theme created by Gabfire. It needed a lot of tweaking but the look and feel is so much stronger. It would have been possible to create a similar look with Thesis but we just didn’t have the time.

Good luck with whatever you choose :)

  • @jgassistance Thanks Janet!  Glad it helped!  :)

  • I’ve used a lot of premium themes/frameworks and I like Genesis the best for two reasons:1. The child themes allow me to create wonderful “out of the box” sites. I purchased the Developer license and since I install a lot of WordPress sites for my clients it has more than paid for itself.

    2. I’m a Virtual Assistant and not a Developer so the support forums are a true lifesaver! The wonderful people there have saved me from myself on many occasions and make me look really good to my clients. ;)

  • @howwhowhen you made my life simple :D and  @kristi-hines what a brillant post it is. a non techie guy like me now understands the framework world to a bit and at-least ur thoughts helped me to make a rational decision of going for thesis :) thanks a ton :)

  • @rshahbaz thank you sir for explaining me so well :) feels good to see people sharing here. And by the way i have made my mind for thesis :D

  • @jgassistance thanks for sharing your story. i have made my mind for thesis and all after reading the amazing article of Kristi.

  • @saraharrow thanks :) for your thought and i am going with thesis.

  • @sandrapearson i am a non techie guy so i suppose thesis will help me to concentrate on content rather than technical things :) thanks for your thoughts.
