Guest Posting Question – When to post on your own? (10 posts)

  • Hi everyone!

I was asked to do a guest post (my first one!) and was curious as to how long you should wait before you post it on your own blog? (With the text “Originally posted on ….”

Or is that considered duplication of content and it shouldn’t be done?

    Thanks!

  • @alice-ly Hi Alice,

It depends on what the owner of the blog where you’re guest posting allows. A lot of them only retain first publishing rights but many want complete exclusivity.
You can publish an excerpt of your post on your blog and link it back to the original guest post but I wouldn’t advise publishing the entire post on your blog at a later date.

Think of guest posting as giving a gift to the blog owner. There’s to do with as they wish. Publishing it again on your blog in its entirety would seem a bit like taking back that gift. Not necessarily but that’s how I feel.

    Hope this helps!

  • @samarowais Thanks for the response! I’ll ask them about exclusivity then, thanks :)

  • @alice-ly

Personally I would suggest avoiding this, although posting on your blog about your guest posts is actually a really good thing.

You could do a unique post on your blog that’s a bit shorter explaining about the post and where your readers can find it or you could do a curated post with (sort of like a round up post) every so often with the links and summaries of your guest posts.

That way the post you end up posting would be able to rank in search and be more unique than if you posted something that was duplicated on another site.

  • Hi Adam, thanks for your input!

Sometimes I see other major blogs repost their entire guest post so it gets confusing as to best practices.

But I agree that the post should be unique.

  • Alice Ly I’m agreed with Samar as she stated above that you can post excerpt of your blog post into your own blog, or you can drive traffic to your blog post by spreading the original link to your social networks.

  • Alice … do you have an example (link) of a “major blog” re-posting their own guest post?

  • I didn’t save the link(s) unfortunately but I spotted it on SmallBizTrends where they reposted their posts from American Express OPEN Forum and I think from SBA.gov

  • At Triberr (in combination with WordPress and the Triberr plugin) we can ReBlog an original post.In effect, we allow guestblogging through our “Tribe” as soon as we install the plugin.

We do (re)post the whole article, the only thing is that our Author Box gets posted along with it.., giving full credit to the original writer… It is never our content and we will never claim it as such.
This is the original post, and this is the reblogged post.
This might not be the absolute best way to get up in SEO rankings, but is a great way to get your name out there.., and in the end.., that is what you want.., right?

    @alice-ly  @roadturn  @tufee

  • @alice-ly You can run it by the blog you are submitting it to – some blogs don’t mind reposting, but they usually want to have the exclusive for a certain period of time.
