Google Reader is Shutting Down July 1st – What’s Your Favorite Alternative (13 posts)

  • Just in case you haven’t heard, Google Reader is being retired on July 1st (unless this petition makes a difference).

I’m going to be trying Feedly, Netvibes, and Newsblur.

What are your favorite alternatives to Google Reader for RSS subscriptions?

  • I’ve been using Feedly for a little while now – that seems like a good alternative.
It also integrates with Google Reader, so a good opportunity to sync your feeds before it goes.

  • Thanks Kristi and Sam. Was quick to rush to Feedly and synch my Google Reader too.

  • I’ve been Feedly for a couple of months now and absolutely love it. I use the App for Ipad and Iphone and the user experience is great as you can customize how you view the feeds. Whereas before (using Google Reader) reading through all my feeds often became a chore, with Feedly it’s actually more enjoyable. The use of images and photos definitely makes a difference.

Glad to see that Feedly seems to be one of the favorites to take over from Google Reader :-)

  • Feedly is definitely winning so far. They’ve gained 500K+ new users since the announcement. :)

  • I’ve looked around, but haven’t found anyone talking about what will happen to Google Alerts. I set up a over 100 alerts that I pull snippets from, rewrite, compile, curate, and publish roundups with attribution and links back to the original author. Am I going to have to REDO all those alerts in another reader like Feedly? Or will it be able to read my Alerts, too?

Since the mass exodus, I was able to sign up with them, but can’t bring up the site to work with it yet. Anyone know how this affects Google Alerts?

  • Just for clarification, Alerts pull stories by keyword. I then copy the RSS feed for that keyword search to use for my stories. But they all use the Google Reader to work… at least that was my understanding. Does Feedly have this capability and will I need to reset ALL those alerts?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts…

  • @atlantarobin When I signed up for Feedly, it moved my Google Alert feeds over just like the rest of the feeds. The feeds themselves don’t seem to be tied to Google Reader – this is their base URL.

I haven’t read anything about Google Alerts going way, but Google has been cutting their services bit by bit for awhile, so who knows.

Social Mention used to be a good alternative, but their Alerts system has said it will be back in a week for the last year I think.

  • Thanks, Kristi. That makes perfect sense, but just had to ask. You never know what’s really connected until things shut down, lol. But I’m definitely breathing easier now… after spending hours inputting all those alerts… didn’t want to do that again. Thanks!

  • @atlantarobin On the off chance that Google Alerts goes away, Search Engine Land just wrote about this service: http://www.talkwalker.com/alerts

If only they allowed you to import your Google Alerts.

  • Thanks, Kristi… I’ll check it out.

    @kristi-hines

  • Thanks everyone this helped alot

  • Summly, news 360, flipboard. I am stating to love Scoop.it and more than likely pay for it! Paying for it might no be love, but love the tax deduction.
