Google Merges Search and Google + Into Social Media (11 posts)

  • Search has changed guys.

Most expected update from the Google is here:

What do you think how this will effect bloggers and marketers ?

  • @rshahbaz I haven’t seen the update come through, but if it allows you to have a personalized view and a regular web view without the social personalization, I’m all for it.  So long as they don’t remove the latter of course.

    More on it…

  • @kristi-hines @rshahbaz I also saw the news today, and it made me realize perhaps this is THE day that G+ gets propelled into social media mainstream.

To answer your question, Rana, I believe it will make marketers more aware of the need to have a presence on G+ for brands they represent, or for their clients. Search is such an important aspect of online marketing that it would be unwise not to do minimal trial and error on this platform.

Big news, that’s for sure. Great news, too, I think.

We’ve known it was coming for a while, so this is going to be interesting.

Especially the government’s take. It appears that Congress is already questioning them on this issue and anti-trust laws.

Here is a link to a new article on the subject: http://betanews.com/2012/01/10/googles-new-personalized-search-raises-antitrust-concerns/

One quote that I found interesting was the comparison between what Microsoft did with IE to advance its monopoly over netscape, and the fact that Google is only allowing through social media posts through Google+. due to privacy setting concerns on other social media platforms.

So as with everything Google, some good, some not so good. Stay tuned.

  • @donpurdum Your closing words said it best: As with everything Google, some good, some not so good. But it is certainly a move in the right direction if G+ is to become the social media contender it is poised to be.

  • Oh, yes, social search is amazing…But there are some dangers behind that concept.
It means that my search results will become very different from everyone else’s.Google should consider adding a new button for good ol’ “misanthropic” search.
Because I don’t want to be forced to open an anonymous session every time I need to search a keyword and ignore my friends’ opinions.

  • @demorden – I have really mixed feelings about it. I’ve already had the experience of finding “friend” results which were highly ranked and not helpful, with the real pearls buried 5-10+ pages deep in the SERPs and written by people I do not know.

I’d like to be able to invert it and exclude everyone in my network. Get some diversity in the results.

On the other hand, I do like seeing what various people in my extended network are getting up to, and if a result comes back from within my network, and it’s useful, I’ll go with it.

  • @doolin I’ll wait and see how the whole thing goes, trying the same searches with my bunch of google accounts… anyway what I mean is: you revolution your core feature? Allow me at least to choose if I want to use the new or the good ol’ one.

After all I’ve heard many devs saying that with computers, if something works, don’t touch it. That makes sense, doesn’t it? And google searches had surely worked well in the past years. Both from a technical and a business point of view, IMHO.

  • I hear you guys. Even before this I’ve constantly had to deal with bizarre ads related to the multitude of search research I do on my personal computer. Meaning immediately following client kw searches on fire ants, for example, all the ads everywhere start showing me bug repellent, fireplaces, and ant farm toys. Can’t wait to see the drivel that results from my friends’ likes and errant searches. And I’m just sure they’re going to love all the science books, legal briefs, logic puzzles, and techno-babble toys that pop up due to my obscure interests.

    @demorden @fredericgonzalo @doolin @rshahbaz @donpurdum @kristi-hines

  • @atlantarobin – haha! I did some due diligence on a fashion startup recently, and work with a salon owner. But, really, I’m *not* a Kerastase customer, beautiful, bold, brilliant banners notwithstanding.

  • @doolin LOL ;-)
