  • Do you all run google alerts for your blog? Meaning, I am running a google alert for my blog title. That way when someone searches for it I get an email. So when I get one that means that basically, my blog name is quietly building search equity? I want to see if I understand it right.

  • I use alerts but never thought to do it against my blog titles! Sounds like a great idea!

  • Never thought of that one before, sounds a great idea!

  • @glengorham Google alerts don’t work quite that way, though it would be awesome if they did! These alerts tell you when Google finds something you’ve written, but it’s not based on what other people search for, jhust the keyword search that you entered. It’s still a great way to keep tabs on your blog and when someone mentions your blog then those may come up too.

Check out SocialMention too, their alert system is broken at the moment but a search there shows a LOT about how your search term is showing up and it’s real time. I check there often for the usernames of my clients and myself and often find mentions that didn’t show up in Google alerts.

I do run Google Alerts for our company “Social Media Examiner” and SocialMediaExaminer.com

I also run them on my name.

I have also done them on my book title.

I find them very valuable and have them come in once per day.

  • @jfouts @mike-stelzner Thank you for the input, I will be looking up the utility you mentioned Janet. I just want to be “brand aware”. Your blog is basically your brand. It is you in the social media world (provided that is your main output) so I want to be as aware as possible.

  • @glengorham You’re absolutely right, being on top of what’s out there about your brand, and as  @mike-stelzner mentioned, things like a book, a business name etc can help you see opportunities to engage you might have missed. Like Mike I have Google alerts set for my books, blog, web company, my name etc and I get them daily, filtered into an “alerts” box in my email so I can quickly review them daily.

  • @glengorham I have Google Alerts set up to let me know when someone mentions my name or blog in a blog post, social media update, or other content online.

When you get an email, it means that someone has mentioned the name / keyword you searched for, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that they linked to it which is the only way you would get any SEO value out of it.

Google Alerts are an essential part of my business (we write online content and manage social media accounts for our clients). For instance, one of our clients is a company that does tax preparation for independent truck drivers. Have you ever tried to think of interesting, entertaining things to say about taxes for truckers? It’s a challenge.

We have Google Alerts set up for “trucker” and “trucking.” Every day we sift through all the horrifying news about truckers getting in accidents and running over people and driving drunk and we pluck out the occasional nuggets about truckers being honored for bravery, or for pulling someone out of a smooshed automobile, or for feeding the homeless.

Google Alerts delivers everything that has been published online that day about your keyword. For example, if you set up an alert for the keyword “adoption,” you’ll get news about people adoption, pet adoption, highway adoption, and technology adoption. But it only takes about 10 seconds to glance through the day’s headlines and pick out the good stuff.

  • I run alerts for my name, my company, my blog posts, my industry and topics of interest surrounding my industry. Google Alerts is a super great way to think of new blog ideas. Love alerts!
