Getting Started 101? (21 posts)

  • I will ask you to forgive my ignorance of social media and blogging.  I work for a company that sells social media and seo programs as well as websites, and I feel a bit like a novice when it comes right down to doing this.

I will tell you that I have some personal passions for helping people, and I would like to begin to develop a strategy for not only writing blogs, but developing into a writer.  I figure that connecting with people and learning to blog will help me tremendously.

So my question is … is there a Blog / Social Media Strategy 101 Plan out there that may help me.  I want to begin to blog and to write about the topics that are close to my heart, but I want to have a plan or strategy laid out through which I can do this.

Any advice on preparing before jumping right in (or beginning with the end in mind) would be very appreciated.  I would love to have tips or even some “editors” who would like to help someone get started in this!  Thank you.

  • @johnpulley No need to ask for forgiveness.  We all started out new to the blogging / social media game.  :)

I didn’t start out with a strategy or plan in mind. I wanted to start blogging in the beginning to share my creative writing. After writing a bit, I wanted to start getting new people to read my content, so then I jumped into social media.  Soon I developed an interest in the blogging process & social media, and that’s how my blog became what it is today.

As far as getting started guides, here are some to go with.

On the ProBlogger site, I would suggest starting with the First Week of Blogging as it everything you need to know once your blog is set up.  :)

  • Thank you so much @kristi-hines .  I have printed out these, and I am about to read them.  I appreciate you so much!  If you know of any others who could advise or help, I’d love to hear from them too.

  • I have set up many clients with their own blog and found many who just didn’t know how to get started, so I created an eBook they could refer to for the fundamentals at the start.  I uploaded it to Scribed at this link:  http://www.scribd.com/doc/51734135/A-Simple-Guide-for-New-Bloggers

  • Thank you so much  @dcoville001!  I’m really trying to think through what I want to do and how blogging can fit into my strategy. I really appreciate the suggestions here and look forward to blogging soon!

  • One of the things I love about blogging and social media is the generosity of the community.  The posts above are living proof.

Here are my 2 cents.  Just start writing.  Write and write and write.  Don’t make any big decisions until you have completed a good number of posts – like 20 or 30.  This is where your voice will begin to emerge and you’ll know more about what your blog contribution is all about.

Wordpress.com is really simple to begin using.  Also Posterous.  They are both free.  You can decide about hosting and other details later.

    Best of luck – Susan

  • Writing is the best thing you can do. The hardest part of blogging is continuing to do it. If you can make it a part of your regular schedule you will have more success. I am at my blogging best when I write every day, but how often you write is up to you. But it is kind of like exercise, the more you do of it, the easier it will be and the better you will be.

  • Thanks so much everyone! I have never even tried to blog!! I don’t feel writing is a natural and enjoyable process for me so I’ve avoided it. These suggestions have been helpful to explore.

  • I thank you for your encouragements and guidance @swrightboucher @bradfordshimp @beeorganized.  I’m glad to be journeying together on this!

  • @johnpulley Hi John.  I just wrote this post with resources for starting a blog on WordPress.  Hope you find it useful!  :)

  • @kristi-hines  For starters … perfect timing.  I literally got on Wordpress this morning and was poking around in there trying to figure out what all to do and what all I could do with it. that looks like a slightly longer read that may take some time, effort and energy to really get what I need out of it, but I am a little bit OCD so I am very excited to have that level of information available to me.

My company actually builds websites for a living, and our Chief Web Architect just finished writing a book actually called Do I Right – A CEO’s Guide to Web Strategy.  He builds all of our websites in Drupal, so I will be very interested to see how WordPress is compared to Drupal in your article.

Thank you so much for remembering me and letting me know about this article.

  • @johnpulley and friends,

I really like the idea of blogging, and have been considering it for my job.  The above posts are great to see how to get started.

Not having been involved with blogging, or for that matter really even following one, I am not sure how a blog in my job/industry would apply.

I’m a director of sales of a limited service hotel here in Colorado Springs.  I see blogging of topics like how to negotiate a group contract, to what is going on in the local area tourists might be interested in.  Would these type of topics fit into the blogging world?

  • @beeorganized
    Glenda,

I see you like to “bee organized,” so if writing feels uncomfortable to you, perhaps you could get a Google Voice account, call up a friend or yourself even, and talk about what you are most passionate about. Talk your blog post into the phone and onto your page without writing. Google Voice will record your voice and transcribe it. Take the transcription, edit it, and voila, you’ve just created your first blog post without writing! Pretty sweet, huh?

If you find you like doing that and want to invest a little bit of money into doing that better, look at Dragon speech recognition software. A friend uses it to talk and record his product listings and descriptions on eBay. All with only a bit of editing and no creative writing involved.

Forgive my memory, I believe SiteSell.com has a video or written testimonial about a women who developed her site around a tourist destination. It gave good examples about what to include in your site, how to organize, who you might make advertising or referral deals with locally to help monetize your site, etc.

Oh, great! I found the link, but it was just a little girl named Nori who started this high traffic site. Of course, she was the daughter of the SiteSell business that helps people build online businesses. I’m not an affiliate, so this link is clean. Just thought it might give you some ideas. Don’t look at the quality of the site. Look at how it’s set up, as well as all the ideas you can get for monetizing your own site. If I recall correctly, she even added Web 2.0 pages for her visitors to talk about their best Anguilla vacation memories, or something like that. I think that’s what jumped her ratings so high. Google loves Web 2.0

Hope this helps give you some ideas.

  • Robin,Thank you so much for your suggestion! I think that might be a viable option for getting my ideas down and then editing “with some help” :-) . It makes the process much less intimidating! With appreciation,Glenda

  • @deairby I have to agree this is the best networking site around, and I have to give you props for helping some one else out, wish you were around when I first started!
