General Blog Training (6 posts)

  • Hi everyone…

I have a client who wants to learn to do her own updates on a WP site we’ve set up for her using thesis. I already know that she’s not real savvy with a computer, but she also doesn’t want to pay for us to do the updates. I have already built in some training for her, but want to be able to leave a document with her to help her as she gets started. Something with some good illustrations etc.

Yes, I’ll probably put some training together down the road, but I’m not there right now. Generally, most of our clients are already blogging and are looking to take it up a notch. First time with a newbie….

I’d love some recommendations and if you have something that fits the bill, I’m happy to recommend it to her.

    Thanks for any advice!

  • @susanhand Has she taken a look at the WordPress support docs? They have http://codex.wordpress.org/First_Steps_With_WordPress which starts at logging in and goes through setting up categories and plugins. After that, there are links to support docs covering additional features. Plus there’s a huge FAQ page that directs you to more topics - http://codex.wordpress.org/FAQ

  • If there is anything specific to that website, you could install the plugin ‘wp help‘. That will allow you to add help docs onto the website (just like a normal post). – Sam

  • @susanhand I had a reader asked me the same question once and I pointed her to this free Udemy course: https://www.udemy.com/wordpress-101-course/ .

There are some paid ones on Udemy but I’m sure she can start out with this to see if the materials are sufficient. I find that beginners learn faster with videos because the jargon used in text materials often confuse them.

    Hope the course helps. :)

  • @susanhand I do one to one webinar training on WordPress and MailChimp. I record the training and send it to the trainee for later reference. Other than that WP 101 is wonderful.

  • I just wanted to come back and thank everyone for their help.

Based on your input I’ve put together a customized doc with links to some of the great resources you pointed out to me. It’s amazing how you can think everyone knows how to do some of these basics and you find out that there is still a huge gap that needs to be filled.

Thank you for all of your ideas, it really helped me bring it all together.
