  • How often do you blog? Is there a breaking point where it is too much or not enough? My current “series” is a daily one (40 Days of Soup) but I don’t usually have something everyday. I’m looking for a balance.

  • I generally try to post on my blog 3 times a week. For one month I posted every two days, but I began to feel as if all my time was taken up with blog posts. Three times week usually seems to work with my schedule.

  • @charlottewood speaking of taking up your time, how do you manage your time on the computer. It is so addicting!

  • @deairby My personal approach is to only blog when I feel I have something good.  Some people try to go everyday, but with mediocre content just to publish something.  That kind of things shows.

That said, usually the blogs with the most traffic are the ones that post daily or multiple times a day with the help of multiple authors / guest bloggers.

  • thanks  @kristi-hines

  • I always recommend when bloggers start that they be realistic about the time involved and whether 1, 2 or 3 posts a week is do’able.  You can always start with 1 a week and then bump it up to 2 or 3 as you progress.  The most important thing is to be CONSISTENT.  If you can consistently churn out one a week with Quality content, then that would be your ideal choice.  If you can manage 2 with great content then do it.  You can always increase that schedule later on.

As for the content, I run iinto ideas from:

    • reading other blog posts
    • articles I have read
    • drawing from my own experiences
    • sharing new information and statistics
    • setting up Google Alerts with specific keywords – it does all the research for me
    • my viewpoints on other`s blogs with a link to their blog post
    • and sometimes I get ideas while I am driving around

I am using Wordpress so it is so easy to go into my Dashboard and create a random title about the idea I have for a blog post and make it a Draft.    Usually those are not time specific and I use them when there is not something current I want to blog about.  So I never encounter a time when I know I need to get a blog post out and sit looking at my keyboard with no ideas.

I also recommend setting aside Blog Duties on your To Do List each week…say on a Friday afternoon to wrap up your week – lots of news and sharing items you would have to draw on to make a post for the week.  And if you are doing 2 or 3, block off a half day each week to do them – I find when I have finished the first one, I often am pumped up with writing and want to do more – I`m sort of on a roll so to speak.  In this way, I don`t find blogging a chore but actually is a creative outlet and change from my other duties.

  • @dcoville001 Diane, what a marvelous, helpful post. Thanks. Two especially helpful take-aways from you: 1) start a draft when you have a non-time-sensitive topic idea! love that and 2) google alerts – I need to find out more about this And, I’m mentioning Charlotte and Kristi here so they will find out about your awesome post. @charlottewood @kristi-hines

  • I usually do 1 article per week.

I know that more articles will give me more juice. Will see if I try add one more article per week next year. I rather go with similar approach as @kristi-hines

But for me it also has to do with knowing your niche. And follow the principles of building trust and relationships with your readers.

I think @dcoville001 touch on a good point. Consistency will become important. For me if I start push out to many articles then I will put myself two step backwards.

    Cheers..

  • I think the key is consistency.  If you can only do one post a week because of other obligations, work, family, etc., then that is what you do and keep it going.  However, Rich Brooks recommends posting 2-3 times a week for 6 months to really impact search engine results. He gave a great presentation on SEO and being found on the web.  I wrote a series of articles on it here in case you missed it:http://www.blogsbyheather.com/series-how-to-be-found-on-the-web/

As your business grows you may be able to hire a blogger for you to post more often, or you can also look into guest bloggers (always people looking for work and there are many that do great articles).

Anyway, I try to do 2-3 times a week, but at times it’s only once. But I keep trying to keep it at 2-3 times at least.

Best wishes, keep posting :D Heather

  • Hi @deairby

When I am not participating in a blog challenge I would have to say I average about 2 posts a week. In January I will be participating in the Ultimate Blog Challenge co-hosted by my favorite gal Michelle Shaeffer (@michelleshaeffr on twitter). Michelle also has a wonderful site called Daily Blogging ideas ;)

This is my 3rd challenge — it’s great to participate in because you meet so many other bloggers out there (newbies to hard core bloggers) and they really do help with more traffic.

    Best wishes,Kimberly ~ Gypsy

  • @aremorch Interesting, I’ve never heard of a blog challenge. What do you blog about? How does it work? I did a writing (toward a book) challenge of 100 words a day for 30 days which was profitable. I’ll check out the link, thanks.

  • @blogsbyheather What do you blog about?

  • Hi @deairby
My passion, talent, knowledge, background and love is for my Hotel Family. I blog about how Social Media will extend the basic values we build our Hotel Services and Products on.
And my blog foundations is showing the results that I set out for. So I am satisfied with my achievement this year. Somethings I did really well, others not so well and then I made some mistakes. Will go over all this next week.
This is why I am really excited to be here on the SME Networking Club. Since I work as an independent contractor by myself it is really great to get input from others here.
I learned a lot just by following the SME blog, so this was a great extension for me. And I already found a lot of great value here. I am in the Business Club and there I find some great tips on organize my business plan better for 2012.

But yeah I will work on something similar to the challenge you mention next year. I read a lot of info related to my niche and also on Social Media, so I keep a idea bank.
    Cheers…

  • @kimberlylosavio, thanks for the Ultimate Blog Challenge information! Sounds like a really fun idea to start the New Year off right!

I’ll sign up and join you in January… and wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas!

    Warmly, Carmen

  • @penworth @aremorch @kimberlylosavio Looks the challenge is on for 2012! Let’s go bloggers!

  • @deairby @charlottewood @kristi-hines @dcoville001 @aremorch @penworth,

hi all, again no. of blogging during a particular time frame differs from person to person and from blog to blog, but to make sure google doesn’t consider your blog as spamming tool, i would say thrice a week or so is what i do, i mean overloading the blog with post everyday(even if not necessary), is what makes your blog look like blog bomb. (This is my personal opinion, i am not sure whether anyone will agree or not to me :)

  • I watch the traffic on my blog and note a total spike when I publish (though I am looking at volume numbers most of you would scoff at likely). So yes, consistency is what I am attempting to get nailed down. The coffee world is full of blogs, I know shocking we all seem to have opinions.

I will work at setting up the google alerts, that’s a good idea @dcoville001.

  • I find it difficult to blog more than once or twice a week.  I like the idea from @dcoville001 about using the dashboard to put down your ideas.  And I like the idea of posting on a certain day on a consistent basis. I think most people/readers like consistency.

Sometimes I ask some of my twitter friends to repost a blog for me.  This usually gives me a spike in the visits to my blog…

Thanks for all the great ideas…

    Cheers

  • @cynthiacosco thanks for your comments, Cynthia. I agree that consistency is probably the most important factor, whether you post daily, weekly, or monthly.

  • @deairby
    Hi Irby!
I blog a lot about blogging (LOL) :D
My “business” site is http://www.BlogsByHeather.com where I started with a bunch of how-to article on blogging focusing on Blogger and TypePad; then added WordPress. But then also post about Constant Contact and Photoshop tutorials, how-to articles.  Lately I’ve posted a lot about social media, like Facebook.

I just posted a survey on my blog asking my readers what they want more of and I’m happy to say they still want how-to blogging articles :D

So starting up again the New Year I am focusing on a bunch of how-to articles more than anything else, and instead I will be tweeting and posting on FB about new social media tips I come across every day.  So it’s a great mix of everything :D

My other site, http://www.HandStampedByHeather.com is a persona, paper crafting site where I post handmade cards that I’ve made and what products were used to make them.  Those are my two main blogs, but the Blogs By Heather blog is the one I pay most attention to :D

    Happy blogging!
    Heather :D

  • Do you ever sleep?

  • @blogsbyheather my last reply was meant for you, Heather. Do you every sleep?!! Where do you get your how-to information? Do you find it in your head?

  • @deairby
    Oh Dea!
I’m sorry, I read your name wrong – LOL.
I think I should get some glasses! Or maybe it’s that I have unwrapped and put away too many of my kid’s presents today that I just cant see straight anymore today…LOL.

    Sorry about that!
    Heather :D

  • @blogsbyheather ha! I didn’t even notice because I didn’t have my contacts in! AND, I was focused on your long blog!

  • @deairby
LOL. But to answer your questions…I don’t sleep much. I have a 2 yr old and a 5 yr old and while raising them :D I do my Blogs By Heather business :D

So with that, I do try and post often, 2-3 times a week. Sometimes I fall short as the days go so fast..but I do try to keep up as it’s important with SEO and I like to keep my following happy and giving them the info they want.

I’m very self taught, I love to learn new things, but I also do have a background in computer programming which is why blogging came easy to me in regards to the back-end stuff…which enables me to write how-to articles.

What I learn, I write and share.  And I try and do it all platforms (Blogger, TypePad and WordPress are the ones I cover) so i do them like 3 times – LOL.

Anyway, hope that helps explain what I blog about and where I get some of my how-to stuff from.  Most of my how-to articles come from my customers and what they ask.

    Happy blogging!
    Chat soon,
    Heather :D

  • Well, you just go, girl! Congrats on your success. I only have one blog site and today I am three days late with my last three posts (I’m doing 40 Days of Soup and although I made the soups, I haven’t posted about them.) and we are about to make Pizza Supreme Soup. Happy New Year@blogsbyheather

  • I agree in blog from 1 to 3 articles, depending on your availability.

Quality vs Quantity is the best thing about blogging and a lot of some other things too! =)

  • summary: Focus on content, be consistent, the length will take care of itself. @blogsbyheather @manonfire_

  • Wow – interesting thread. This morning I have mapped out my blog posts for the first four months of the year.  This year I am going to switch to mostly video blogging and attempt (!!) to do two blog posts per week on two different subjects, which are the subjects of my two books… meaning a total of 4 per week.  I have found that my blog posts open rate is higher on Wednesday’s and Friday afternoons.  So I have scheduled Monday’s to either record or write two blog posts per week, which will then be ready with editing, for posting on Wednesday and Fridays. Then use the other two posts to blog on topics of current interest.  thanks to everyone who has posted their ideas, I will be adding a number of those as well.

  • @sallythibault You have certainly drawn a line in the sand, Sally. I am challenged to be as organized as you with blogging! How are you going to record video for your blog?

  • @Dea Irby – We have a small studio (and I mean super small, ie kitchen stool set up against a wall, with a small table next to it) set up in a portion of our house.  We have a Kodak camera with a microphone and do all the filming there. Using natural light as the room is surrounded by windows.  It all looks professional until the clouds cover the sun :)   I then edit them on Movie Maker and upload them to Youtube and then to my blog and then tweet/facebook.  I did a lot in 2011, but then switched back to writing later in the year as the filming would take ages until I was happy with it, and my speaking engagements took over.  However, I have decided this year to map out the subjects then take each of them and create only 3 or 4 tips for each.  My challenge is to get the blogs down to 2.5 or 3 minutes and yet make them content rich.  For me, it was establishing my niche and just staying in it, resisting the urge to expand.  I feel that 2011 was really for me, exploring what it was that I wanted to say and then being comfortable in my own skin enough to expand on that.  I smile when you say about being organized – I realised today when I was doing all my planning, that the planning part is easy, it is the execution that is the challenge!!

  • Plan your work and work your plan!!!! PPPPPP! Proper prior planning prevents poor performance! You can say those things all day long but the challenge ( :) ) is definitely execution! (Sometimes I feel like I’m the one who needs the execution-firing squad style! lol)

  • @deairby

I used to blog on a daily basis, after a while I started looking for content as it became very difficult to generate interesting content on a daily basis. So now I update 1-2 on a weekly basis

    Regards,Sandeep
