Free Wordpress Themes (8 posts)

  • What is your favorite FREE Wordpress theme and what do you like best about the functionality of that theme?

  • I like the twenty eleven theme because of the simplicity and ease of use and flexibility. Also the iFeature one is cool, it has a neat slider image feature.

  • @deereinhardt @glengorham I agree with Glen the new twenty eleven theme that comes with Wordpress is very good. Withe the number of themes out there picking one is difficult. I can spend a lot of hours browsing themes. :)

  • I have to 2nd what @ayaz1 said with going for a premium theme, going with a framework or customizing the 2011 theme.

Mainly for this reason ~ some (not all) free theme developers put in code that feeds information from your site to them. I’ll have to dig & see if I can find the articles that explained the what & how. But, that thought alone & led me in the direction of using paid themes when I can’t/don’t want to use the 2011 theme for some reason.

  • Free is always good, the twenty eleven theme can be customized easily if you know CSS. Some of the other free ones out there can be really bad and some don’t allow much customization. I agree with @christy some do put ‘secret’ code in that can slow down your website, not to mention send out information you many not be aware it’s sending.

If you don’t have alot of CSS or HTML experience you might want to try a premium theme. I have been using elegant themes (basic subscription is $39/year) so it’s not too expensive. You get access to 60+ designs, some with nice features.

If you plan and organize what you will be placing on your website and make a list of the features you want it might be easier to then find a theme design.

  • This is so timely I had to share.

I went to a Meet Up in Toronto last night and met Matt Mullenweg. We talked about A Couple of Chicks e-Marketing’s mandate to educate and empower clients on WordPress. I told him about our mentoring program and how people were astounded by the software and that they have a hard time believing that it’s free.  With his great big, 28-year-old-genius smile he said “next time, tell them the best things in life are free”. What a moment!

  • Free is never what it’s cracked up to be and unless your tech savvy, newbies will have a hard time when problems arise. Most free themes I ran across when I started out had no support when problems started creeping up. The developer was nowhere to be found and it was a joke to work with. I heard that the Arras Theme is a great theme to use for Free with support included.  I only buy from Themeforest or Elegant themes. I have to make sure that my money is well spent if something goes wrong in the future.

  • I asked this same question in a previous forum because I, too, was looking for a versatile free theme, with adequate support and updates.

Someone suggested Suffusion. After looking at about 100 examples of what others have done with it, just WOW, and reading the developer’s blog and all the user comments, I decided to try Suffusion. I’m working on it now, not finished, but I’m really loving it. So versatile with so many already done for you things to choose from. I’d definitely check it out.

    Just my two cents…
