Food Blogging – getting started (11 posts)

  • I’m kicking off a good blog in 2012.

    Help is needed!

    1) How do I get some immediate comment traffic so the blog doesn’t look dead2) What do you mostly visit food blogs for?

If you’re running a food blog, be sure to leave me a link. Thanks,Todd

  • 1. Traffic is slow at first, that’s the way it is. To help improve this you need to use a synched FB Fan Page, Google Plus business page and twitter account. Use dlvr.itto cross populate posts. This will help, replies on FB or Google Plus have as much value as those on your word press (or blogger or Tumblr or what not). Please for the love of anything you hold holy, make sure you have several months of posts done before hand. I cannot overstate that enough. Nothing makes a blog look more stale than several weeks between posts.

    2. What do I look for in a food blog? Recipes and how to. What sort of things can you tell me about HOW to cook. Tell me about the history of that recipe, where did it originate from? Why should I saute it as opposed to grill it or whatever.

Great luck with it and give us a link when you are ready to post!

  • @tojosan There is a post about reciprocating comments here to help one another’s blogs get going, and it’s likely a good idea

In a food blog, I look for recipes and commentary, particularly degree of difficulty or things to watch out for–those little things that can make or break a successful dish.

  • @tojosan I don’t look at food blogs all too often, but when I do, I’m looking for recipes with great photos – if a recipe post doesn’t have a photo, I usually move on to one that does.  I like to see photos of the process (ingredients, action of mixing) and the final result.

When I first started blogging, the best way I found to get traffic was to comment on other blogs in my niche.  So if I were starting a vegetarian food blog, I would find other vegetarian food blogs to start commenting on.  In addition, I would connect to those bloggers via Twitter, Facebook, Google+, etc. and comment / reply to their posts their.  It’s a great way to start networking!

  • @glengorham – great feedback. I’ve been so focused on the ‘blog’ side of blogging, I’d forgotten what I know about social media in general. Cross-promoting and setting up outposts is spot on advice.

@joanmuschampfagnani – recipes with commentary makes sense. Sometimes I just see a recipe and the commentary adds little help but talks more about a side story of finding vanilla extract with their friend.  Degree of difficulty is something I’d enjoy myself. Thanks for those tips.

@kristi-hines – cross-commenting! Love it. Another tip I’ve forgotten over time. Connecting needs to happen ahead of time as well. Thank you.

  • @glengorham @tojosan I’ve been blogging for almost a year but with a variety of subjects. I recently finished a series of 40 Days of Soup and am about to start a series on Pantry Raid (not to be confused with panty raid) Cooking-finding available ingredients and making them into a dish.

  • Nice @deairby.Do post up a link.

  • @tojosan The Baron York thanks for asking
