Facebook (Timeline) vs Blogg (13 posts)

  • Now when we have the Timeline feature of Facebook – what is the difference between the blog platforms and Facebook.
If I am starting a blog - shouldn’t I be using Facebook as my platform? I no – why not?
Are there any discussions/thoughts out there about Facebook starting a advertising revenue sharing program like AdSense?

  • There are other threads about this but here it is, facebook is far too limiting to be a blog, it is where EVERYONE is but you really shouldn’t use that as your blogging platform.

You should use your platform of choice, be it WP, blogger, tumblr whatever, and you definitely need to be feeding that out to FB, G+ etc, and you should be using twitter to do it. Once you create your post you should use an agent like dlvr.it to get it out to your various presences.

Use the major social networks to drive traffic to your site.

  • I agree with Glen. Although Facebook allows for you to do more than the usual social media site, the idea is to direct them away from FB to your site and what you’re doing.

But Arni…I get where you’re coming from. There’s a lot of marketing room to play with on Facebook. For sure…

  • @arnizophoniasson The biggest reasons for not using Facebook as a blog include:

    • You are subject to Facebook’s changes.  Businesses who started to depend on making sales with Facebook through their page’s default landing tab with a shopping cart, for example, are going to take a big loss now that there isn’t an option for default landing tabs.
    • You are subject to Facebook’s rules.  If you do anything to break their rules, you might lose your personal profile or page.
    • You won’t own your content or community.  If you have a self-hosted WordPress, for example, you can backup your content, comments, etc.  If you lose your Facebook page, all of the content you posted with it along with comments from your community are lost forever.

  • I echo @kristi-hines and the value of owning your content and community. You cannot direct contact your community except via your wall. You cannot send out newsletters, you do not own your database of followers. You cannot export your followers to a database. ( unless you scrape using Yahoo or say a greasemonkey script that could get your page removed)

  • Thank you very much – I fully understand the arguments you made Kristi, very clear.

From a technical point of view the difference is getting smaller and the benefits of having the facebook traffic at hand is appealing.

  • I agree with @Kristi-Hines, since I do not have a lot of personal content…and want to keep it that way. The social media is already putting someone else’s face to my company…because they do not have a face…instead of using my display photo (on search results). Each step is getting closer to no privacy at all…I could go on, but why, we all need it, it is just a matter of which one, at what time. I am not impressed with TIMELINE, and would never consider replacing my blog for it.

  • Kristi talks about the importance of having control and to be the owner of the content.
The control argument is very strong – the content argument is in my opinion not so impressive. Content is not as important as everybody thinks – that is old content. What is important is CONTACT and to be able to make valuable contact one needs decent content. But content as such has limited value.

  • I follow a gentleman on G+ that posts on G+, then uses ifttt to push the content to his actual blog and other outlets. It’s an interesting way of doing things. He had an entire post on why he was doing it that way as well, but I can’t recall the specifics.

  • What about a blog inside a facebook page (wordpress site inside an app)? I wonder if that would increase visits to your website… I will experiment with this.  Anyone got an opinion on that?

  • @vincentedwards

I am currently in the process of setting up a platform that does that you can check it out here https://www.facebook.com/iFramesMadeEZ/app_251172918303380

  • @scottmadden ah I went down that path with joomla about 2 years ago on ning.  Good luck with that!  I tried your system but to be honest, I got lost.

  • I started using Weebly.com with a free website  linked to my main website as it has a nice ‘user friendly’ blog page and it drops it right onto my facebook timeline (just thought that I need to check whether it also puts it on my business page) I’ve clicked on that link Scott (thanks) and I’m going to look at using that app too, it looks very ‘professional’
