Evernote as an Organizational Tool for Blogging (28 posts)

  • I’ve been using Evernote for jotting down notes when I’m out and about– and love the way it syncronizes across devices yet I’ve never used it as an organizational tool for blogging.

I came across this post by Michael Hyatt, How to Use Evernote as a Blogger,  by making Evernote part of your “blogging workbench” that I think offers some good tips for how to use evernote every step of the way in the writing of blog posts. Thought I’d share here in case others would find it useful, too.

I’m going to try and see whether I can develop this kind of organizational practice with Evernote. Too late for a 2012 new year’s resolution?

Anyone using Evernote this way? Or do you have another tool on your blogging workbench you’d recommend?

  • @debbie-hemley  I freaking love Evernote!!! I utilize for my entire life. For work I share notes, images etc that my partner needs. I use it to store my project timecards, cause I can always find them and use them even if I’m not at my desktop. I put all my blogging topics, and to do lists into it. I also house all my marketing calendars in Evernote. It’s the BEST!!

  • @amyhallbiz Ah, so good to hear!

People are pretty fanatical about Evernote. Did you see that Inc. magazine gave them company of the year? Here’s the article.

This is a fun article, too, about how some big names in tech industry use Evernote.

  • Very Cool!

  • @debbie-hemley  Do you do Evernote coaching?

  • @amyhallbiz No I don’t do any Evernote coaching. Have you?

  • @debbie-hemley I’ve never used Evernote, but I think it’s never too late for a New Year’s Resolution.  I started one of mine in December, and probably will start another next month.  No time like the present to start something good, whether it’s New Years Day or not.  :)

  • @kristi-hines Alright, alright, you convinced me!

  • Thanks to the link for the great article!  What a great idea to take pictures of your receipts.  That is going to be my new favorite way to use Evernote!

  • I absolutely use Evernote as a blogging tool! It’s amazing. I can’t imagine blogging without it. Here are just a few of the ways I use it every day:

Topic ideas list - Great for when I think of something “on the fly.” I can just call up the app on my phone or iPad from wherever I am and add it to the list.

Article Clipper – With the Chrome Evernote Clipper widget, I can clip anything I’m reading and put it in whatever notebook I want. You can have a “Read it later” notebook, an “Ideas for inspiration” notebook, a “How to” notebook or organize it by topic – WordPress, Twitter tips, Facebook help, Blog ideas, etc. I can then access these articles when I’m ready to write.

Stop & Go – I love that I can start something one place and pick it up somewhere else. I often write for a few minutes on the iPad while the kids are running around the house, and finish the post later on my computer. I don’t ever have to worry about losing what I wrote or wondering “where did I put that?”

Mobility & Synchronicity – I love that I can go from my work computer (mac) to my home computer (pc) to my phone (droid) to my iPad and everything is right there, in exactly the same format.

Client meetings - I always clip graphs & charts & great little nuggets of information on my desktop. Clients love when I pull them out on my iPad at meetings. “Oh yeah, I just saw something about that… Here it is…”

I also use Evernote for a lot of personal projects. My favorite is recipes. I find something I want to make online, I clip it in Chrome, I look up ingredients via my phone at the grocery store and follow the recipe on my iPad in my kitchen.

Pictures on receipts – that’s a great idea! I hadn’t thought of that one!

  • @debbie-hemley Oh boy! I am now off to get Evernote! Thanks everyone for sharing the information.

  • @deannagibbons Yes, definitely like the receipts idea, too!
@socialamateur Really appreciate you sharing your ways of using Evernote for your blog posts. Article clipper will be a big help.
@debby Happy to hear that this is of interest to you. Good luck with it.

  • Great ideas!

Here is one more Evernote tip - this one is designed to cut down on the number of email messages I send.

Create a note for each one of your direct reports or the people you work for.  As you think of things to talk about, jot them down in the note.   Pull up the note during your next meeting or telephone call.

    Less email and more productivity!

  • @swrightboucher  Good tip! Thanks for sharing.

  • Wow, great ideas! I have heard so many great things about Evernote and downloaded it once maybe a year ago, but got rid of it when I started using Springpad. But I feel, from all these great ideas, Evernote may be a great option for the new year. :)

  • I had not heard of Evernote before reading this thread, and downloaded it a couple of days ago. Phenomenal!

I am still working my way around it but it’s pretty user-friendly. Using it for my blog editorial calendar, and have already started using email to send myself some reminders about cool articles, pictures, or stuff I want to remember for either twitter or blog post later on.

Many thanks for all the feedback!

  • @morganbarnhart I’d be interested in hearing what you think if you try it out. It’s really quite cool!

@fredericgonzalo I’m really happy to hear that you discovered Evernote as a result of this thread and that you’re finding it helpful.

  • I love Evernote too – I have a blogging notebook and in it is a note for topics I want to write about, a note for possible guest posting sites, a note for promotional ideas, a note for possible contests and giveaways, a note for people I want guest posting on my site, etc. Evernote is fantastical.

  • @jesskupferman Fantastical, a great adjective for it!

  • My second time coming back to this thread!   @socialamateur  @jesskupferman  – just added some new wrinkles to my own Evernote – thanks for the great tips.

  • I LOVE Evernote!!! The Inc article was really interesting, especially the psychological side of how the brain remembers things and the part about their pricing. I help businesses with all aspects of social media and marketing strategy and since SM changes so quickly I use it to clip articles to read later so I can stay on top of things!

  • @socialamateur
Fantastic comment and guidelines.  Evernote was sitting on my desktop unused for few months now and i was wondering what app should i use for organization of articles etc. I think I got myself an answer !!!

  • @fsdegrees

Don’t you love it when that stuff happens–you didn’t even have to download or go looking for it, it was right there and waiting for you!

    Hope it’s helpful for you.

  •  @fsdegrees @davidgadarian @debbie-hemley

Happy to provide my two cents. There are a lot of tools out there that bloggers say they “couldn’t live without.” I have two – Evernote and Sprout Social. (Well, WordPress too.) Evernote keeps me organized and connected without much effort. It’s a lifesaver. Hope you find some great uses for it too!

  • Part of my need to explore Evernote more was for research I had been doing for a blog post on content marketing where I interviewed their vp of marketing and editor.

The post was published today and thought evernote enthusiasts here in the blogging forum might be interested in seeing it.

The Elephant in the Room: Evernote Talks Content Marketing

  • @debbie-hemley I love Evernote and use it for almost everything I need to remember or do, especially since it’s easy with my tablet. It’s 3G and I take it everywhere.

@socialamateur – I never heard of Sprout Social. I am looking over their site. What do you like/dislike about it? How do you personally use it? Just want to figure out if it’s a good fit for me or not.

  • I love using Evernote! I have a notebooks for so many different things there and use it every day. My business and marketing plan are in notebooks on Evernote. My blogging ideas are there as well. When I use an idea I cross it out and it becomes a quick list of blog entries I’ve created as well as my ever changing list of new ideas.

Evernote is my electronic brain. On a side note, I also use it to keep track of business books I want to read. I create a note about each book I want to read and delete the note after I’ve read the book. Evernote is my favorite organizing tool!

  • @charlottewood Funny how enthusiastic Evernote users can be! I think the satisfaction of feel organized and on top of things goes a very long way.

    Best,
    Debbie
