Doubts about choosing blog platform (8 posts)

  • Hi everyone!
I am just preparing to launch my first blog, and already stuck with serious doubts. Should I choose a free blogging platform’s domain to publish such as Blogger.com, WordPress.com, or TypePad.com, and maybe later change it for a more sophisticated but not free platform, or from the beginning should I go for a charged platform or it doesn’t matter that much? As I understood to set up my blog on the not free platform would cost a bit more than I wanted to spend right now.

  • Reka,

I would suggest setting it up on your own domain (as a subdomain i.e. blog.xyz.com) from the get-go. That link juice belongs to you, no reason to give it away to blogger or wordpress.org. It will save you headaches down the line. Many hosts offer one click install of Wordpress, with hosting running around $50/year.

With that said our blog is on blogger… Shame on me.

  • Thanks Rob! But when you say ”It will save you headaches down the line”, what kind of headaches do you mean?

  • Hi Reka,

Absolutely set yourself up with your own blog on your keyword rich domain.

I don’t see why it would cost too much – domain, roughly 10$ a year and hosting as low as $5 a month… plus the seo that YOU’ll gain, the personal brand you’ll develop and so much more! Definitely worth it!

Maybe these reasons will help you make your choice as well:http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/clubs/blogging/forum/topic/should-i-start-a-wordpress-blog-or-go-straight-to-a-wordpress-website/

  • hi Melissa,

Very useful link! All what you said makes completely sense. Thank for your advice!

  • @rekaesther There’s a little discussion about blogging platforms here too - http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/clubs/blogging/forum/topic/blogging-platforms/ :)

  • Hi Reka.
I would recommend first you make sure and take up the promise that you would write regularly. Only then it would be helpful having a paid blogging platform. And exactly as Rob said, if you go for a paid blogging platform eg. blog.xyz.com, it would help you with SEO a lot. Or later down the life there will be trouble shifting your blog from a free to paid platform. then you’ll lose all the keyword links and SEO you might have received till then and would again have to start from scratch. So in that scenario, better go for a paid platform, but also make sure you blog regularly. All the best!
