Does it Make sense to have your blog on multiple blogging sites? (8 posts)

  • I currently run a blog on Wordpress and I’m just wondering if it makes sense to post the blog to other blogging sites such as blogger.com, etc?

  • Hi @ashleyhatch Google dislikes duplicate content and posting the same blog content on Wordpress and Blogger would definitely be seen as duplicate content. What’s the issue with duplicate content? Basically it means you are competing against yourself and leaving it up to Google to decide which site is more relevant. It might decide neither and even penalize both sites so you won’t show up in search.

Stick to Wordpress if that’s where you are now.

    Cheers,Monique

  • @ashleyhatch You COULD, if you were so inclined, rewrite the original content. It needs to be at least 25% different in order to not be seen as duplicate, but 50% is usually safer.

However, that’s not a smart strategy, unless you’re only trying to build links. You’re better off focusing on creating new content for your original blog.

  • You could feed your titles and excerpts to the other sites with backlinks to your main article.

Wordpresss is the best place to be! The reason is that when you are ready to migrate into your own self hosted environment on your own servers, the Export / Import of Wordpress makes this relatively seamless. Not the case with Blogger.

  • @boxcarmarketing is right – you end up competing with yourself. I think it only makes sense if you think you can attract more readers to your main blog by publishing portions of it elsewhere. In other words, rather than republishing your whole blog, write a short snippet about each post and use it on feeder blogs on places like Wordpress.com, Blogger, Posterous, Weebly, Tumblr, etc. It’s also another form of link-building, which can give your blog a little extra juice.

  • Hi @ashleyhatch  As someone who made the mistake of not merely having a duplicate blog, but a ton of them about 6 years ago. I had a website and nearly 20 blogs, using Blogger for some, Wordpress for the others. It wore me out because I had some books that I made individual blogs for but I realized that I just needed to make a page for the book and use categories more efficiently.

The advances in both Blogger and Wordpress since I’ve started out make either of them excellent choices, depending on what it is that you have, how you are emphasizing it, and to whom you are targeting.

I have a friend who uses Blogger exclusively because he utilizes YouTube in conjunction with His blog and he is exceptionally savvy with Google analytics. Although you can pay extra to have YouTube or WP video on your Wordpress.com blog (and no problem if you’re using WP.org), if you’re on a tight budget, as I was in those days, Blogger allows you to get that done easier, and its free. I stuck with WP myself, because although I would like to have video on my blog (and I may get it later), it is not as high a priority right now and I just don’t have the finances for it.  I used to have a Wordpress.org website and blog, but when the finances were getting slim because of shifts in priorities, etc., in addition to not having the time to maintain those WP sites, it was really easy to make the transition back to Wordpress.com… the same as @jasonwiser mentioned, but in reverse.

  • Thanks for all the great advice! Very helpful.

  • I’m wondering what made you think of doing this? What advantage were your seeking?
