Do you use Feedburner for your blog? (9 posts)

Topic tags: feed, feedburner, RSS
  • I started a SME Club topic in the past about RSS is it live or dead. (visit the thread here). But now I want to know if you are using Feedburner, why or why not.

I was surprised to see that Social Media Examiner does not use this, but many others, like Hubspot blog do. (Hey @mike-stelzner , why doesn’t SME use feedburner?

  • I use Feedburner. I like the stats and I like that there’s an option for people to receive the posts via email rather than having to use an RSS reader. That seems a little more proactive, to have my new posts delivered to their inbox rather than waiting for them to fire up their RSS reader.

  • @jasonwiser I use Feedburner to check my subscriber stats every now and again, but I do find that they are not always reliable.  There have been many times in the past I have went into my account to find I “lost” 1000+ subscribers one day just to gain them back a few days later.

Another reason people use Feedburner is to have the option to send new posts via email.  But SME uses Aweber for their latest post email deliverability, so that may be why they skipped out on Feedburner.

  • I just find it interesting that when you press the RSS button you are presented the raw xml file. Relatively few people know what RSS feed is, and even fewer know how to use the xml file apart from the friendly add to reader buttons offered by feedburner. I would be interested to find more studies on the amount of people that use feed readers, and use them regularly. @kristi-hines

  • @jasonwiser I use feedburner.

@kristi-hines that’s dis-concerning  about the subscriber stats, but good to know.

One other benefit to using feedburner is that chrome for some reason doesn’t render rss “raw” rss feeds. By using feedburner you can circumvent this issue. Since Chrome has a large and ever growing market share this alone can be incentive to use it.

  • @juleswebb I never knew that about chrome. i use chrome almost exclusively, except when fire-bugging or site testing. I didn’t realize what the feeds looked like on the other browsers. OK I just found possibly the only redeeming thing about IE, i really like the way it renders the RSS.

Such a great thing to know, and in fact, it is the way Chrome renders feeds that sparked my question. I am an i Google junkie.

  • @jasonwiser I was previously a FF user, but have moved almost exclusively to chrome in the last 6 months.

It is interesting that this has been an issue for so long, I really thought they would have resolved the issue by now.

  • Yes, I use FeedBurner on most of my blogs  @jasonwiser I also see the same issues as @kristi-hines. But at least I have some feel how many people use the RSS.

  • I like offering the subscribe by email function, regardless of whether it’s feedburner, aweber, or any other tool. Lots of people still like RSS but lots are more comfortable with email.
