  • Do you know your Klout score?

This is a popular and yet controversial social media metric that measures your influence.  Your Klout score is based upon a scale of 1 to 100.  It is grouped by 3 factors: true reach, amplification, and network.  You are also given a “Klout style” ranging from “conversationalist” to “celebrity”.

    My score is here:

    Peter Trapasso’s Klout score

    Is this important to you?

    cheers,

    Peter

  • @petertrapasso I’m curious about the change in mine sometimes, but not the actual number itself.  I’ll go look at it every so often, especially if I feel I’ve had a good week on social media to see if it’s made a difference.

Overall, I think I have a good feeling of whether or not what I’m doing is making any impact.  When it comes to social metrics, I’m more interested in looking at Google Analytics to find out which social sites are driving traffic to my blog and, most importantly, leading to mailing list or eBook sale conversions.

  • @petertrapasso I am with @kristi-hines on this one as I also look at the score when I think that I have a really good week in social media, with a lot of mentions and coversations and guess what happens? It drops… I wish I could understand this.

  • @petertrapasso @kristi-hines @eugenoprea It’s sooooo awesome to research and learn terms or services that I had no idea that I didn’t know what I didn’t know!  Just signed up for the Klout score.  I actually had done something similar recently.  I had kept a file with my scores before I really starting diving in.  My scores have really gone up while I have been keep true to myself and just writing content that is from my heart and authentic!

Thanks for the continued information!  @mike-Steizner huge thank you!  since joining this forum less than 5 days ago I have learned more than I did on my own over the past 5 months.

  • I am interested in this, primarily because I don’t worry about this much. It bothers the individual in me…I don’t want to be worried what others think about me (too much). One of the beautiful things about social media is that it gives a voice to anyone who wants one.

    Should I be more concerned?

  • Another thing, I like giving +K to people and this is a way of engaging with them.

  • Klout doesn’t really make sense to me.
I had a sky high Klout when I first joined it and at that point I talked about absolutely nothing but dogs (see my profile, he he…) on social media.

A high Klout doesn’t mean you are talking about anything professionally at all, it can very well be about family, friends and hobbies, as it was for me.

My Klout dropped when they did something to the algorythm recently but there are other reasons too. It must have been about the same time as Facebooks f8, the new Ticker and everything. And I went from having a completely open Facebook profile and everything public to a lot more closed and using friends lists to target special groups of friends. My reach should go down from that alone… A lot!

And since then I got another job position where I am mostly active on Facebook in secret professional groups (can Klout see them?) or acting as administrator for a lot of Pages that are not absolutely not connected to me on Klout.

It doesn’t mean I am less active on Facebook, it just means I don’t think Klout can see it. But my tweeting has gone down, I don’t have the time, have to admit that :)

Never figured out how to give someone K+, how do you do it?

  • @susannstjernborg I think the people with the most popular personal profile activity get ranked well on Klout.  I’ve read that people who share funny updates that get a lot of likes / comments see their scores go up.  I don’t worry about the score itself but just the change – sometimes it’s neat to see if the score goes up when I feel like my activity has increased.

I think Klout can only see activity you do on a public group, so if you are active in private / member only groups, it probably won’t notice.

To give someone +K, you have to to their Klout profile, then click on the Topics menu in the left sidebar.  There you can see the topics you can give someone +K for.  :)

  • Hi friends here at SME..
My friend Sharon Hayes wrote a really interesting article “10 Reasons Why I Opted Out Of Klout” - http://www.sharonhayes.com/business-marketing/klout/

I believe she hit some good points here.

It is to easy to game out these ranking programs. And I am really unsure how they build up their metrics to measure our scores. On Twitter Grader I have one account that I have not used in years that still has 100% score.

Since I work in the Hospitality Industry my goals is to serve every guest no matter what their Klout score is with the same excellent service.

I mostly use Klout for fun, and I give Klouts to people in my network.

    Cheers..

  • Thanks @aremorch for sharing the article. It is good to be aware of the pro’s and con’s. If you have not started your blog yet is it still worthwhile to engage with Klout?

  • My view is Klout seems to favor volume – such as heavy Twitter users, regardless of the quality of content they are sharing.

In other words, one may have a large reach but the content being shared is purely conversational – as opposed to being useful.

Is that clout?  If so, then maybe Justin Bieber’s score of 100 is justified.

On the flip side, Klout tells me I have twice as much influence as Seth Godin!

Klout could be a valuable tool – but it really needs to get better first.

  • Klout is more than a score, it’s a new type of industry!  I expect Klout to announce Klout Local (KL) in the next year.

The Social Influencer Rating industry is just getting started. The Klout Score is just part of the big picture. There are many new start-ups in this area that have potential.

The future of influence will become more topic specific to geographical neighborhoods around where you live and what is of interest to you or your trusted network of friends and connections.

When you look at where the Daily Deal industry started and where it will be at the end of 2012 you will have a more of an ideas where I am going with this.

The internet has opened up the world to us, but it is now starting to help us discover our own neighborhood communities.  A new brand of social local influencers will soar in 2012.

I look forward to seeing where this industry will be at the end of 2012.

  • So what are your scores?

    I’mKlout: 53Reach: 841Amplification: 69Network: 41No influential topics :(

I had a strange move as well — my score dropped after I had a youtube video which quickly got 10,000 views. Also, having private posts of course seems to ding you, but not sure if it should (depends who is in your network.)

One issue I have with Klout is that (I think) there is no way to determine if people are learning from, or laughing at, someone. For instance if PersonA posts an informative, original article and gets 1,000 shares, and PersonB posts a “Share this or you are going to get hit by lightning” post and gets 1,000 shares…should these really be weighted the same?

    Best,

  • I am part of a small group that have Klout as a “watch” metric. So far we are finding it difficult to follow as members have experienced some hard to explain shifts. (Similar to Rob’s youtube example) We are keen to see how it develops and to look for any connection between Klout score and social media milestones and business results.

  • This is good. I’m back. I was here earlier then left to go check my Klout score. I am parked at 48! It’s a little late but I’m still trying to learn new things and hopefully teach a few things everyday. When I was checking my score a bit earlier I came across Wahooly. It looks very interesting and yes I did register for free.  http://wahooly.com/kloutsignup/?refid=1f787d47

  • I’m not a huge fan of Klout, simply because I think the scoring is faulty.  Like you said @kristi, I had a good week and jumped 9 points.  I was all excited.  The next week, they redid their calculations method and I went right back to where I started.  The whole thing doesn’t make sense to me.

  • I really don’t care about Klout at all. It does nothing for my martial arts business, to be quite frank.
