DISQUS interfering with RSS feed (13 posts)

  • Has anyone else had a problem with DISQUS interfering with their RSS feeds? Just wondering as I have on one of my blogs but it’s fine on another. Can’t figure out what is different.

  • @casmccullough are both blogs of same technology? I mean are both wp or blogpost? or differ with each other? I had no problem in getting rss feed

  • @casmccullough why do you think DISQUS is interfering with your RSS feeds?

Unless these are wordpress plugins that are not playing nice together, it’s not likely that this is the issue.

DISQUS is basically javascript on on the page that birngs in an iframe of their commenting system. RSS feeds are xml pages and do not interact with the javascript form DISQUS in any way.

  • @juleswebb When a ran a diagnostic at Feedburner DISQUS came up in the line which was causing problems. So, I deactivated and ran the blog again to see if the RSS was working and it worked. I then activated DISQUS again and, once again, the RSS came up with errors.

When I emailed DISQUS support, they basically said what you said, but because I made it clear the error was to do with DISQUS they’ve since sent me some more info that might help. I was just wanting to know if this was something other people have had issues with.

Both blogs are run on Wordpress.

  • @casmccullough hmm, that’s interesting…

Are you using a plugin for both of these functions? I’m guessing that you are, and that the problem is related to some conflict between these two plugins.

What’s the URL to the site?

  • @casmccullough may be @juleswebb‘s opinion is making some sense. At first sight, it seems to be case of conflict.

  • DISQUS, ofcourse, is a plugin but not the RSS feed. the URL is http://www.supportawahp.com. I’ve disabled DISQUS for now though, until I figure out how to resolve the conflict.

  • @casmccullough You currently have a commenting system in place. Are you looking to replace it with DISQUS or are you adding DISQUS in addition to what you now have?

Also I see that you include comment links within your rss feed. I don’t know if this is part of the problem or not, but it’s worth a peak.  When DISQUS is activated and if your current commenting system is deactivated are these links within your RSS feed still trying to connect to the old commenting system?

Without looking at the page when DISQUS is activated I’m just making guesses.

You might want to consider using google’s feedburner for your rss feed. It’s very simple to set up, free, and collects statistics on how many subscribers you have.  Another really good reason is that Chrome doesn’t render rss feed pages. Going through feedburner circumvents this issue. Since Chrome is now the most-used browser (29% of users) it gives you a lot of incentive to find away around their rss blemish.

     @moinshaikh what are you thoughts?

  • @juleswebb Hi Jules, I appreciate you taking a look. I’m a little confused by your comment though because I do use feedburner for feed subscriptions (although I am starting to get subscriptions through my mailing list program too now and ofcourse have subs through Networked blogs for Facebook). The commenting system that’s in place is just the default one that comes with Wordpress so there should be no conflict there as DISQUS just works on top of that system and imports all the comments.

  • Okay, I just reactivated DISQUS and enabled “comment counts” under the advanced settings and now the feed is working. It says that this will output DISQUS Javascript in the footer. I am hoping that this is the fix I needed as I love the DISQUS commenting system.

  • @casmccullough I’m glad to hear it’s working for you.

    RE: rss feed

The only RSS link I found was in the footer of your page and below is the link it goes to

    http://www.supportawahp.com/feed

If you’ve set up a feedburner account you probably just neglected to update this link in your footer to something like http://feeds.feedburner.com/supportawahp

You would also need to update two meta links in the head of your page
     <  link rel = ” alternate ” type=”application/rss+xml” title=” Support A WAHP RSS Feed ” href = “ http://www.supportawahp.com/feed ”  / >

    <  link rel = ” alternate ”  type = ” application/atom+xm  l” title  = ” Support A WAHP Atom Feed” href=” http://www.supportawahp.com/feed/atom ”  /  >

  • There’s a feedburner subscribe box in the sidebar. I’ve deliberately left it below the fold as I want to get more subscriptions to the feed through Aweber. Am still playing with things though. Thanks for those tips Jules. I’ll have a look.

  • @casmccullough no problem.  I did find your feedburner subscribe form in the sidebar, thanks for pointing it out to me.  The other RSS links will still work, you just wont’ get them counted in your feedburner statistics if they subscribe to your rss feed through the other links.

    Cheers!
    Jules
