  • I’m about to set up a new blog for a client. Can I set it up through my account and assign them a different login and password?  Or do I need to set up a whole new account specific to the client.

    I think I answered my own question as I typed, but would like to hear your thoughts.

    Thanks very much.

  • @stevemcauliffe You should set them up with an account.  This way it is standalone and, if you and your client part ways, there aren’t any transfer issues later down the road.

  • Yes, you can give them their own login and password. What I don’t know is if you re the permanent owner if you create it.

  • Thanks @Kristi-Hines and @ErikDeckers… I figure it’s best to go with a different account as you mentioned Kristi to keep it clean.

  • @stevemcauliffe   What type of blogging software are you going to use?

  • Hello :D

    Kristi Hines <– got it right off the bat. For WordPress, you’d want a clients blog to have it’s own account separate from your own.  I goofed on this a time or two and was sorry later.

  • Thanks @supereb

    @amyhallbiz I’m using WordPress

  • @stevemcauliffe Why wouldn’t you give them self hosted blogs? Then there’s no issue on who own them.

  • Definitely set it up separate from your own account. But having said that, that issue is an entirely different issue as it relates to who owns the blog and all the work that goes into that. That is definitely a contract issue and must be decided before you start working with your client. There are many advantages and disadvantages to owning or not owning the sites you build for clients. It all depends on your strategy for your business. You can sell a business with assets. You cannot sell a business with no assets, so you need to decide what assets you are building with your business and which assets you are simply giving away to your clients. If you give away too many, you are merely hired help with nothing to show for it in the end. Hired help can always be replaced for cheaper, even better quality. So think twice about following business advice that advises you to get away assets for free.

    Just my observations…

  • Obviously, I meant think twice about following business advice that advises giving away assets for free. You must retain some assets to build for your retirement, early or not.
