Creating with mobile in mind – what are the best options? (6 posts)

  • I want my new wordpress site to be fully functional on mobile devices and tablets. I’ve read recommendations to install the iTouch plugin to achieve this. But when deciding on a theme I see that there are one or two that already have this functionality. These are iFeature 4.0.6 and iPhoneLike 1.4. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? They both seem to have a relatively high level of customization available. Also is is better to go for one of these themes as opposed to another theme plus the iTouch plugin? Any advice would be most welcome.

    Thanks

  • @cherelleleong if you are looking at using a wordpress theme, then you should certainly consider ‘responsive’ themes thta adjust their CSS layout depending upon which device your site is being viewed upon. A responsive wordpress theme will negate any need for a mobile plugin. there are some really gorgeous ones on themeforest.

  • @cherelleleong I highly recommend the WP-Touch plugin. We use it on my worksite to share the blog content. I haven’t messed with it too much to see what it does to the rest of the site.

I do know mobile is becoming more important to us — at one point, more than 25% of our traffic was coming from a mobile platform of one kind or another.

  • @cherelleleong  StudioPress has recently come out with some great mobile responsive themes.  They are easy to customize and offer outstanding support.

  • I’m hesitant to put my money on anything mobile right this minute because the technology is changing so fast. That may sound weird or chicken… but this time next year, is our mobile site going to be outdated and we’ll have to change to something else? Or do you feel comfortable using the limited tools and sometimes unreasonably expensive tools available right now? What do yall think? @rebeccaolkowski @erikdeckers @cherelleleong

  • If you use a mobile responsive premium theme such as a StudioPress theme or a free plugin like WPTouch, they are constantly updated to be relevant to any new technology so that shouldn’t be an issue.
