Comments not always showing (4 posts)

  • We have a Wordpress blog (http://blog.nrcprograms.org) where sometimes comments show up and sometimes they don’t.

For example, one of the latest posts (http://blog.nrcprograms.org/contest-everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-indians) shows one comment.  I tested it again today and was able to add another comment.

However, we receive the emailed comments and it looks like there are some that aren’t showing in our dashboard to be approved or in the spam folder.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, what did you do to correct it?  (I’ve looked online and most of the questions I see related to mine don’t have any comments showing on their posts at all, so they aren’t helpful. )

    Thank you in advance!

    Alicia

  • We use Akismet for spam.  Could it be deleting good comments?  If so, is there a way to change the setting so spam is marked, but not deleted automatically?

  • @asearfoss Because of spammers, it is always a good idea to have your comments go into moderation first.  But there is a setting under Discussions that allows you to only make first time commenters go into moderation.  Once approved, so long as they don’t change their name, email, or website, they will automatically be approved for the future.

Some comments (even ones by previously approved commenters) could be going to the Akismet spam filter.  I just check mine on a daily basis – usually it catches one good comment out of 100 spam ones which makes it worth it.

  • Thank you, @Kristi-hines.  We do have everything going into moderation.  We checked the spam folder and these specific comments are not there.  When I test, though, my comments always show up and we currently have one comment that we approved that’s showing on the post.

I’ve been searching the Web for some idea and the problem is most answers are for when no comments show up, not when it is intermittent.  I’m backing everything up now and then I’m going to try disabling the plugins and then enabling them one at a time, testing inbetween.  I’m not sure how I’ll know it worked since my comments go through without a problem, but I may have to take out Akismet for awhile and just deal with the spam until I can see one way or another if it is deleting good comments before we even see them.
