business licence needed for bloggers? (9 posts)

  • If you are planning on making money with your blog, do you need to get a business licence?

  • @deairby Great question! I treated my blog as just income on the side until just recently. I did finally set up a business, but it was more for my freelance writing than just affiliate sales or advertising. I’m not sure legally what you’re supposed to do though…

  • Generally this falls into the Home Business category and in many municipalities it would not require a business license.  Earning money by writing does not usually trigger the need for a business license.  But if people, trucks, supplies will be coming and supplies stored in a garage/basement, the municipality will require a zoning variance. My consulting business is incorporated, and I do a great deal of work at my home office. Have for the past 22 years and it has not created a problem or need for a business license.

  • thanks for the input, ladies @kristi-hines @trudy

  • I just run mine under my business entity. Freedom of speech should cover a lot of territory with this as long as you are actually writing and not just selling.

  • but if you are not just writing and are selling and don’t have a business entity? @judithgotwald

  • In California, a business is required to be licensed if it is subject to County health or safety regulations so blogging in and of itself does not require a business license in California. But, the State’s Board of Equalization collects sales and use taxes. In California, you need a seller’s permit if you sell or lease tangible personal property. If you are selling a tangible product from your blog that you are shipping (or having shipped) to your readers, you may need a permit. The requirements for Business Licenses and Sales and Use Permits may be different for each state so you should check with your local and state government agencies to find out what your obligations are.

  • I think if your blog creates income the IRS and other entities would probably want to know where and how much you are collecting for income

If you are using blogging as part of you current business, say if you are selling unique clothing and blogging is part of it you can include it as part of your business. If you are solely blogging and making income soley from blogging – it is your business and people who collect taxes on your income, I think, would be interested.
