blogs to follow? why? (39 posts)

Topic tags: blogs to follow
  • What blogs do you follow? What’s your number one blog read? Where do you learn the most or get the most inspiration? Why do you follow that/those blog(s) over others?

  • If I could only read one blog every day it would be Seth Godin’s blog (http://sethgodin.typepad.com/). He posts daily, which is always nice, his posts are short, informative, entertaining and thought provoking. He challenges your thoughts on a daily basis, which I believe make them extremely valuable. While I read a handful of other blogs regularly, he’s the first one I go to in the morning and the one I respect the most.

  • I love the Simple Dollar, it deals with the same topic as my blog, saving money, and Trent does a great job. I also get stuff from Digital Photography School

  • My favorite long time blog is Wizard of Ads. Roy Williams is one of the most creative minds I’ve encountered. The content varies in terms of topics covered, but is always worth the read. He’s the founder of an alternative business school, so his blog has great contributors among his faculty and students.

  • I follow several blogs since they all add something to the mix. It doesn’t get much better than Problogger and Copyblogger, and agree with @sbush about Seth Godin. Always straight from the shoulder and on point.

  • I love this guy:  http://www.localvisibilitysystem.com/blog/His information on getting local visibility is right on time. He also has some great information and resources i.e.   a 200 list of citation sites.

  • In another thread here on SME, I mentioned I have a number of blogs that I keep an eye on by having them bookmarked and review periodically.

However, one that I do have sent to my inbox is SME’s own John Jantsch‘s Duct Tape Marketing.

John’s blog is hyper-information, full of helpful suggestions and easy to read.

    @johnjantsch

    @deairby

  • thanks Warren @warrenveach

  • @warrenveach I agree, that’s a great blog!

@sbush  I have been meaning to check out Seth’s blog, he’s awesome.

I have gotten into the habit of following FamousBloggers.net. They have a lot of variations on all kinds of articles. And, they’ve introduced me to a number of different bloggers through their community news.

  • I love design blogs…im also a sap for Adobe so it works but i feel it always gives me the best insperation to write

  • To learn more about the how-to’s of blogging, I’m following Pushing Social. The writing is crisp and clear, yet playful at the same time. Unlike other blogs, the tone of Stanford’s blog makes it seem as if we’re out for coffee having a conversation.

I follow blogs by 4 or 5 professional organizers in other states just to see what they’re doing. Plus my guilty pleasure is reading The Pioneer Woman Cooks cooking blog. She loves food, takes spectacular photos, and the way she writes about the recipes makes them intriguing enough to try. (I’ve tried several with great results!)

  • All great suggestions…and let’s not forget @kristi-hines and her blog http://kikolani.com/…great blogging tips and info.

  • Thanks Charlotte for the shout out.  I look forward to sitting down with you and having a cup of coffee some day!

I try to visit blogs outside of the blogging niche.  This way I don’t contribute to the echo chamber :)   My list includes:

    TheSalesLion.com QuickSprout.comMixergy.com

  • I am a big fan of Michael Hyatt’s blog.  He is the former CEO of Thomas Nelson publishing.

  • Charlotte, thanks for the link Pushing Social, I’ve signed up for the newsletter and am working through the 7 minute ebook @charlottewood

  • There are so many that I read thru the week, but I miss a lot too because I have so many subscriptions. I browse the subject lines in my email and get to the ones I can…

but I’d have to say that one that has been a delight for me is http://photobotos.com

There are some really great photos that are posted on the blog; and that they are on WP, I can “like” a photo and reblog it easily which brings in some additional traffic… kind of like what Pinterest does when you attach photos to that (from what I’ve heard because I’ve yet to use Pinterest…. and when I reblog, I write a sentence or two (in some cases a couple of paragraphs), which will show up in the comments and that also stimulates traffic.

Even if it didn’t add traffic, I still like the blog.  I also like your blog @deairby …and I’m not just saying that. I haven’t been there this week, but I enjoy your outlook because I’m relatively new to the south (been in Alabama only 3 years) and your perspectives have not only given me great info on the topics you’ve covered, etc., but helps me in understanding some of the various cultures in the southeastern US better. I’m actually more of a missionary here in  Alabama than I was when we ministered in remote bush Alaska.

  • I feel kind of funny saying this, but I know my blog is chock full of great social media information, so I would have to suggest it.  The Social Media Badass

I also read Mashable every single days because it is not only a source of great information, but it is also a place to find tips and tricks on just about anything having to do with social media.

I hope that mentioning my own blog is not too commercial, but I generally receive extremely positive feedback on it, so I offered it up here.

  • My favorite blog…(if you don’t find this an amazing site, you are not reading)… Pat has so much for all of us, http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/ !!!

  • Hello Dea,

My list of blogs that i follow to learn something new everyday is quite bigger. But here are the top ones, which are on top place of my list….

1- CopyBlogger ( To learn about copywriting and content marketing )

2- Problogger    (To know the best way route to choose to be a problogger soon)

3- Quicksprout ( To Know more about  SEO and marketing thing )

4- Mashable (Because Of Social Media Fever)

    5- michaelhyatt (Learn Something inspiration)

6- contentmarketinginstitute blog ( To know more about content marketing)

  • Social Triggers. Derek Halpern. His blog and his podcasts.

I am some what of a Halpern evangelist.

  • @deairby @sbush

Thank you all for these great suggestions.  I only wish there were more time in the day to read everything.  Hopefully, one day, my blog and writing skills can rise to the top too.

  • Michael Hyatt is my new favorite! amazing stuff! @romysingh

  • A must read for small business owners and business start-ups: http://blog.asmartbear.com/ by Jason Cohen. Very sharp, insightful, and to the point posts.

There’s also http://www.growmap.com/ by Gail Gardner for small business owners trying to grow their businesses especially via the Internet. Her posts are very thorough and informative.

And I’m surprised that http://www.chrisbrogan.com/  isn’t on here- if you are involved with social media then it’s important to keep tabs on this site.

  • I would have to say that Seth Godin is a blog that I enjoy following. But like many others I do like to keep up to keep tabs on Chris Brogan and he is very good at answering your questions. Mashable because of the knowledge the writers impart to the readers. It really depends on what I am working on also.

  • thanks for the tip for Chris Brogan, I really enjoyed him and hope to learn more @adamgottlieb

  • Great thread!

I seem to get great info daily from @jeffbullas@kissmetrics@kikolani@copyblogger@problogger@ducttape@chrisbrogan

But I must confess to using Summify and Curate.me to filter – I don’t literally visit each of these faithfully every day. They show up in my Summify and Curate.me emails every day.

  • Kirsten, thanks for that tip! I MUST do that, too. @mspseudolus

  • @deairby sadly, Summify isn’t taking signups any more. But Curate.me is pretty good.

  • I like “Smartbrief for Entrepreneurs”.  Gives alot of advice on having your oown business

    Love Socialmediaexaminer!

Lots of great information on Nolan Burris and Mike Marchev.  They just have websites, but they are great!

  • Social Media Examiner, Mashable and Seth Godin are regular stops, and a whole lot of home decor/design/architecture/green building blogs that I pop in on now and then (House of Turquoise is probably my favorite of those.)

When I just need a laugh, it’s gotta be Jenny Lawson aka The Bloggess

  • Problogger, copyblogger and of course socialmediaexaminer.com. How bout YouTube…is this not a blog? Facebook? Twitter? Blogging can be useful for information as well as social interaction. So I try to make all these a part of my day in some form or fashion.

  • SME :)

Kristi is immensely knowledgeable, and has been doing this stuff for *years*, since before it was cool. I suspect she will be one of these “overnight” successes here pretty soon. She also has a photo blog. Look for it.

  • @donpurdum Thanks, Don for recommending Famous Bloggers. Just spent a half hour reading as much as I could. Great content, design, comments, and links. I especially like the way he organizes his thoughts and presents info accordingly. Makes me feel my time’s well spent reading him. Added it to my feeds.

  • @deairby While I read about 30 social media blogs, I really focus time on blogs outside of my industry, too. I think it helps me to stay creative and think new ideas.

No one mentioned http://alltop.com/ so I will. It’s a great list of blogs organized by categories. It’s my go-to place for finding new reading materials.

  • Top Blogs in my Google Reader:

  • Thanks for the tips everyone! I look forward to spending a lot of time reading some of these :) Hopefully I will have my own suggestions to add to the list shortly!

  • Apart from Seth and Social Media Examiner already mentioned…

    • Heidi Cohen’s posts are always excellent. Her tag-line is “actionable marketing expert” and it’s true; she posts tips that you can do straight away.
    • The Anti-Social Media always makes me smile – A satirical look at social media.

  • Thanks for your reply. Where or should I say how, do I find heidi cohens posts?
