Blogs about the Oscars from unlikely industries! Did you partake? (5 posts)

  • As amusing and entertaining as the Oscars were (Cirque du Soleil tous les ans maintenant s’il vous plaĆ®t!) I’m equally amused to see the Oscar-themed blog posts emerge.  A decorating site showcased celebrity kitchens, ThisOldHouse.com featured 11 Home Lessons We Learned from the Movies.
My fine followers of blogging and social media, I must ask:
Did you blog/tweet/post about the Oscars on behalf of a brand? If yes, how did you do it?

Finally, would you consider it a best practice to make your brand relevant to a huge pop culture event (Oscars, Superbowl, etc) when it is not in a related industry?

I’m interested in puzzling this out with you, thanks for you time!

  • Dani, I think it’s better to gently flow with the crowd and crowdsource on these things… so yeah, I’d definitely put it on my editorial calendar for a unique mention or tie-in no matter the brand. But then that has been best practice for any type publication for a hundred years or so, lol, for whatever the masses are culturally entranced by at the time. What’s relevant to the masses is always relevant to the tiny niches they affect, if only by virture of being too big to ignore.

  • I’m an ad writer and creative strategist so I always write about the ads–whether they’re for the Super Bowl (http://orionadvert.com/2012/02/06/superman-super-bowl) or the Oscars. I spend my evening pad and pen in hand taking notes and then writing furiously the next day!

  • @daniloebs I think it really depends on if your blog would benefit from the audience searching for Oscar-related posts.  If you had a fashion site that sells Oscar-style formal dresses or a movie site that sells DVDs of Oscar-winning movies, then maybe.  Otherwise, it would be a nice surge of traffic, but probably not conversions.

  • I replied to a FB post completing the sentence, “The Oscars were….” …what stood out to me was the “Square Deal” you get at JC Penney. Great ads–Ellen rocks!!

Very happy for the winners, but the program was flat– In 90 seconds, Chris Rock was funnier than the whole Crystal show!  Promo for next year’s host??
