There are a few quite good plugins that helps prevent spam, I will list a few here:
- Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin (free)
- SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam (free)
- CommentLuv+ also has this feature (premium)

Hesham, which one of those would be the easiest for a novice to deal with? Technically and hassle-wise?

@atlantarobin Actually none of them need any technical experience rather than knowing basics of how to install a WP plugin and play with its settings.

Akismet does a great job of intercepting and flagging spam comments.

@digistreammedia I use GASP (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/growmap-anti-spambot-plugin/) which adds a check box captcha to your comment form (no funny words to decode) and Akismet (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/akismet/) which filters comments it thinks are spam into a spam folder.

Wow! I appreciate getting names of a few great tools here because it means I can free up some of my time. Now if I can get these 1200 comments posted in the past 3 days gone, then I can start from scratch…Thanks so much!

@digistreammedia – I agree with the choice of Akismet. I like that it puts all suspicious looking posts (in their various iterations) in a folder for me to act on. Sometimes, I simply delete all without browsing. Other times, I browse, and I’m always amazed at how far these spammers go to mask themselves. What a waste of time. Anyway, I’m glad I have Akismet playing guard on my behalf.
