Blog on professional services website – monetize or not? (5 posts)

  • If you are using a blog to attract traffic to your professional services website, is it considered bad form to try to monetize it with sponsors, Adsense ads or affiliate links? Thanks.

  • @stanrobinson Yes it is. You’re trying to present a professional image as someone who makes their living charging thousands of dollars to Very Important People.

You’ll hurt that image if you have ads that will net you tens of dollars from Google.

Your blog will look like a commercialized site, and not the site of someone who is confident enough to charge thousands of dollars.

  • @stanrobinson I would say it depends on the type of services being offered and their relative image/value, but in general for most types the industries are staid and it would hurt.

You’d be better off with partner relationships and links from a partner page that nets you partner/affiliate commissions. That is a lot more commonly done,

  • @stanrobinson I try a bit of both.  I have a blog where the main focus is content, but I also have a “Hire Me” page.  On the blog, I have affiliate links, advertisements, etc.  I also have a separate domain for my freelance writing portfolio, and that site has no affiliate links, ads, sponsors, etc.  I would say if your building a website / blog for a company though, you probably wouldn’t want any of the affiliate, ads, or sponsor links.  Mainly because your main goal will be to keep people on your site, not steer them away from it.

  • Eric, Joan and Kristi – thank you for your helpful replies. This is exactly the type of information I was looking for.
