Blog comments and viewership (4 posts)

  • We’ve been blogging for about a year now and can see a couple of trends that I am curious if they are normal or how I can improve on them.  Our posts are quite varied – some serious, some more lighthearted and everything in-between.  We are hotel consultants, so you can imagine we have lots to talk about.

We promote our posts to our subscriber list of about 800 people in the industry.  We also post them on the company and personal LinkedIn profiles and the LinkedIn groups we particitipate in.

There are 2 trends that we have recently identified:
1 – generally, we get very few comments
2 – serious posts get far fewer viership than lighthearted ones

Case in point – a post about how bad lighting is in some hotel rooms and ideas on how to improve it got hyndreds of views and a few (JUST a few) comments.  A recent post about a security report encouraging folks to download it and use it to ensure their security plans incorporate its suggestions got less than 100 views.

    So my questions are:
    - Is anyone else seeing these trends?
    - How important are comments and how can we do more to encourage them.

We’ve tried to play with the calls to action and vary them every time, I recently added a “Like” button so we could at least get get feedback without much effort.  Any additional ideas is appreciated.

    My blog is at http://www.her-consulting.com/blog.

    Thanks
    Evelyne

  • Hi,I’m new at blogging, but as a web designer, I can give you some tips. First, I would suggest you improve your design, I see some glitches and design problems, take a look into that. Also, you use uppercases too much. In the web, to WRITE LIKE THIS, is like you were yelling, I don’t think anyone should use it.

Also, you could change the design of the ‘Sign up’ form, in my browser looks a little messy and it should stand out more. I think if you want people to sign up, it’s better to just ask for name and email. If you ask for more people are just too lazy.

And, I don’t see any social icons! Only linkedin. If you don’t have any social media accounts besides linkedin, you shouls still put social media icons on each article! I use DiggDigg for that and it works really well.

design is quite important I think if you want people to read and comment in your blog. But if you want ideas on how to get more engagement, I think just go for the type of articles that people like more. Maybe reading serious post are too boring for your audience?…

in my blog, the more personal I’m in my articles, the better the engagement I get. But that doesn’t work for everyone.

  • @evelyneoreskovich Really depends on your audience and what they signed up for. Maybe they subscribed when you were only posting lighter pieces, and they aren’t interested in anything in-depth.

In general, you need to assess your goals. Do you want an audience that only wants the light pieces or would you rather keep posting the in-depth pieces in hopes to attract an audience who prefers those. Are you going for conversions, social shares, comments, etc.? Blogging is one big experiment – if you aren’t getting the results you want, you have to see what you can change.

  • thanks for your comments and suggestions!
