Blog Carnivals? (21 posts)

  • I’m thinking about setting up a Blog Carnival and was wondering if any of you had any experience of these and if it is worth the time and effort that needs to be put into it. Any tips and advice also welcome!

  • Hey @symposio Here is a previous thread on the subject: http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/clubs/blogging/forum/topic/blog-carnivals/
I hope that helps give you some ideas.

  • Thanks @glengorham! I hadn’t seen that.

  • @symposio @glengorham I’ve never heard of it before. Would someone please explain the concept? The previous thread wasn’t much help on this. Sounds like something I might be interested in.

  • Here’s some info to help you Mark.  This is also the website I’ve used in the past to participate in blog carnivals.

  • @markoetjens- someone setting up a Blog Carnival decides on a particular topic and then asks for bloggers to submit posts/articles on that topic. There is a specified date for the ‘carnival’ and a specific deadline by which articles are submitted (allowing time to decide which will be included).

In a way it’s a bit like a magazine – editions of the carnival typically come out on a regular basis (e.g. every monday, or on the first of the month). Each edition is a special blog article that consists of links to all the contributions that have been submitted, often with the editors opinions or remarks. It can also be a one-off carnival.

That’s my understanding, but I was hoping for people who have actually done these to give tips and comments.

  • Thanks for helping me to learn more about blog carnivals.  Never heard of them until today!  Can anyone send a few good example blog carnival url’s?

I would be interested in considering joining your blog carnival once set up.  I run an active blog and my posts are also fed to the B2Community business blog which is NOT a carnival, but already has set Categories as you can see at the top.

    What topics would yours cover?

  • @symposio Thanks for information. Definitely sounds like something I’d be interested in. What topics are you thinking?

  • Dan McCarthy hosts a really good leadership carnival that’s a good example of one in action.

Obviously getting content is the key thing.  You can submit content yourself to begin with, but obviously the key benefit comes when bloggers are engaged enough to submit it naturally.

  • Thanks @adigaskell

@digistreammedia @markoetjens- As our blog is a cooking blog (Authentic Greek Recipes) what we are considering is doing a Carnival with international cuisine – hopefully getting submissions from a range of ethnic food bloggers, and ideally from those that are actually in the country. I guess that isn’t something that would be suitable for either of you, unfortunately. (from what I can see in your Bios, anyway)

  • Never presume, Tony! There may be more closet Greek cooks out there than you realize! :-)

  • @symposio Tony, you might find this blog of interest – http://www.notdelia.co.uk/

The lady that runs it is a moderator with me at the Aardvark Business forum.

  • Here is a link to a long-running blog carnival.

  • @symposio I would love to participate.  While I do not do a food blog, I do have a life, stress and humor blog.  Food is a big part of how we handle our stress and life events.  I have actually written about this in my blog.  If you would like to see if it would be compatible check it out at http://www.myoxisamoron.wordpress.com.

  • @judithgotwald  :)
@adigaskell @jennamills Thanks for the links!
@fawnmorgan- I’m still trying to decide if the time and effort that goes into a Carnival is justified by the results (mainly traffic-wise, I guess), but I’ll be sure to let you know!

  • I would say the impact of hosting a carnival is less in traffic terms and more in terms of blogger engagement.  You’re building relationships with lots of key bloggers in your niche.  That’s more important than short-term traffic boosts imo.

  • Thanks @adigaskell! Your comments have been really helpful.

  • Blogging does have the potential to increase your blog traffic and expose your blog to a new audience. The carnivals typically (in my experience) have an order and the “hosting” blog will provide the complete list of who is participating with a link to every one of those blogs. Additionally, on each blog post, related to the carnival, the link to the next participant is listed. If you are in the carnival, you may be providing a link to a totally new blog to your audience, thus expanding that blogs exposure.

  • Well, I’ve decided to go ahead with the Blog Carnival It’s called World Food Delights and is going to be featuring recipes from all over the world. It’s going to be monthly and to start it off – a sweetener, I guess you could call it – it’s going to be sweets and desserts. Blog posts that are not recipes but are related to international cooking are also welcome.

One thing I thought would be a nice idea is that I’m going to pin the photos from the selected submissions on Pinterest, which direct links from there to the recipes.

Anyway, for those of you interested, the kick-off blog post about it, with details,  can be seen here.http://realgreekrecipes.blogspot.com/2012/03/blog-carnival-world-food-delights.html

Any thoughts / comments greatly appreciated! Hopefully, I’ll be able to get back with feedback after the first one.

  • Blog carnival is an interesting concept, thanks for the info
