Blog as a Subdomain good or bad and how? (5 posts)

Topic tags: CNAME, subdomain
  • Hiya,

I have been told that if you link your blog to your website as a subdomain it is counted by search engines (as well as people accessing it through your website) as being actually part of your website. This would then count as content for your website etc and would surely be a positive thing.

My question for the forum is therefore threefold;Firstly, is the information correct ?Secondly, is it a good or bad thing to do?And last but by no means least, if its a good thing to do then how (in simple terms) do you do it? (I’ve only ever seen vague/tech details about CNAME, can anybody explain?)

  • Hi Ian, I’ve created a few sub-domains and believe the sub domain and your website are 2 separate entities.

And yes, the sub domain is crawled by the search engines just as your website would be, but they are not indexed by the search engines as the same.

You may even consider a sub folder instead of a sub domain.
    Example…
    Sub folder… yourwebsiteurl.com/blog
    Sub domain… blog.yourwebsiteurl.com

    Here’s a good article to read… http://www.seomoz.org/blog/understanding-root-domains-subdomains-vs-subfolders-microsites

It’s a good idea if you have a website that you want to keep, and have excessive content. (You can also move all the content, and domain, from the website over to a blog, so you only have one entity, but the added benefit of the blog content)

You can probably go to youtube and find a tutorial on how to set up a sub domain.

    Hope this helps! :)

  • Thanks Glen,
if a subdomain won’t do anything for the SEO of my website then I wouldn’t bother setting that up.

I have a really good quality website provider so I will keep that, however I don’t really understand what you said about ‘excessive’ content, nowadays I wouldn’t have thought that content could be excessive (although I could either be wrong or just not understand).

    Thanks again for your help,

  • Hi Ian, if your sub domain ranks high with the search engines, and you have a lot of quality back links, then linking the sub domain to your website would be beneficial.

When I say excessive content, I mean that you have more articles than your website can clearly display. Which would be a good reason to create a blog.

  • I recommend you include your blog as a sub-folder as well. That will help you rank your site better. Create good content that address people’s concerns and main pain points.
