Best Video Capture Program? (15 posts)

  • I’m interested in creating more video content in 2012, and part of that is finding a solid video capture program!

In your experience, what is the best video capture program? What is the best free program?

If you have samples you’ve made with a certain program, I’d love to see them.

    Thanks much.

Brittany, I just finished writing a list of my favorites in another forum, maybe in the Business Club. But here’s my abbreviated list:

    • Screencaster.com… a great freebie, records up to 15 minutes, while the others limit you to 5 minutes.
    • Screenr.com (?)… someone on here uses this to make all their instructional vids for their blog. She’s really good. Haven’t gone to the scrrenr site, though. Let me know what you think of it.
    • Jing… I use this all the time… fast, easy, 5 minute limit.
    • ScreenFlow… I think that’s the one for Mac… Andy Jenkins uses this a lot and he makes really funny professional vids. He also made some instructional vids on how to make instructional vids. He’s at andyjenkinsblog.com I think.
    • Camtasia is the standard paid classic.
    • I think it’s called Cam Studio that’s the upgraded paid version of Jing, same company at least. I think you can actually edit, add music etc. using this, but I found other creative ways to produce live on the fly with Jing. Just make sure you’ve got your music playing in the background when you record Jing and it’s a cheat way to produce live on the fly.
    Hope that helps!

The good thing about Screencaster.com and maybe Screenr is they’re online, which means you can produce on the fly on anyone’s computer, at the library, at a clients, without having to have a downloaded copy on the computer your using. Really great to know you can do this anywhere, anytime.

Woopsy, Brittany! Must have been having a senior moment there. That’s Screencast-o-matic.com which is the one that’s for free 15 minute recordings. Go PRO will only cost you $12-15 per year and give you editing power, while Screenr.com will put you back $20, 50, 100, or over $200 per MONTH! Whew! Big difference there, for sure! Still, I use Jing more for everything. though I like
    Screencast-o-matic, the teacher’s choice I guess.

While I was waiting for replies (I get impatient when I get an idea in my head!), I downloaded SMRecorder and started exploring its features.

The problem I’ve run into is that if I only want to record a region of my screen, rather than the full screen, SMRecorder does not follow my mouse. I would have to record one region, pause, use the tool to select another region, and repeat! This seems silly. Out of the programs you mentioned, do they follow your mouse when you’re recording a region?

Thanks so much for your input!

  • @brittanyhighland

Can’t remember off the top of my head. Sorry, you’ll have to check that out for yourself. My guess is that they would not. Screenflow might, but simply can’t remember. Sorry.

  • I use Jing for screen shots, I have not played with the video component.

  • @brittanyhighland

I have used Cam Studio (free). But do hear good things about Camtasia (same company as Jing) as well as BB Flashback (and BB Flashback Express) for screen recording.

    Best wishes,Heather :D

  • Greetings, all.  I was wondering if an one knows of al ist or something like it that would let a person know what they need besides a camcorder to start adding videos.  I am a little lost with this social marketing stuff.  I thought a camcorder would be all I need but that not the case. Any info would be appreciated.  Peace, Robert.

  • An excellent starting place is the good ol FLIP CAMERA.  It come with a program for editing your videos and then uploading them to Youtube for publishing. If you are looking for a simple beginning this is an all-in-one sort of starting place.  Just a thought.  It  worked well for me to start the process. To your success, Katie

  • @atlantarobin Robin,

Just tried http://screencast-o-matic.com. It’s just what I was looking for! Thanks for sharing several different ones.

  • There was some discussion about video equipment in the thread here: http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/clubs/blogging/forum/topic/videos-in-blogs  @brittanyhighland

  • @laurachristianson

Laura, I was delighted to share, especially knowing someone found it helpful. I must say I was more than a little impressed when I saw what a sixth-grader could do with Screencast-o-matic.com. It gives one courage and a little hope when trying new things when we can use children as our mentors. Too funny!

  • @deairby Thank you for the heads-up! I posted my question there.

@atlantarobin I have still to try Screencast-O-Matic – it is next on my list. I know there are so many software programs out there. I just need to find the best one for my purposes!

  •  I capture gameplay on the Xbox 360 using the Hauppauge HDR box – works great.  If you are on a PC then use FRAPS
