Best Practice(s) for AdSense? (13 posts)

  • Hi.., I’m maintaining (not writing) sowandso.com. We’re just starting but there is a lot of good content being written (no really, I think they’re doing a great job). We’re looking at affiliates, and have some, and working hard to invade the social platforms. It is going rather well.., slowly, but surely (been at it for 7 or so months).

One thing we try to do now is optimize AdSense. It is said that money can be made.., we just need to figure out how to place it best, without it being annoying.

Does anybody has some general advice.., or even better.., specific advice for our blog?

    Thanks!

  • @rogiernoort I’ve had the best luck when placing AdSense a bit higher up in the sidebar and between the byline of the post (author name & date) and the post content.  The key is not to overdo it as one of the things Google is targeting with their updates is sites with too many ads, not enough content.  If you can aim to make your posts between 300 – 500 words (varying) then your site *should* be ok.

  • @kristi-hines Thanks Kristi.., I’m surprised at the number of replies (only the one).., and hardly any topic on AdSense. Is it even worth it spending time and energy on it.For us, so far, it hasn’t, but traffic is still low. And we don’t want to ‘scare off’ anybody with the ugly AdSense…

Question would be: Can it do more harm then good?

Furthermore…, I believe the blog can handle the placement as far as Google is concerned.., although the relevancy is questionable…

  • @rogiernoort I only suggest people use AdSense on sites that have no other goals.  If it’s a site that promotes your business, affiliate products, or your personal brand, the last thing you would want is to give someone an option to leave your site to earn a few cents or maybe a dollar per click.  I only use AdSense on sites that have no other monetization goals – ones where the only way you can make money (even if for the time being before you get other things going) is on those clicks.

  • I have experimented with AdSense off and on, and to be honest, it doesn’t amount to much money unless you get a certain amount of traffic. It can also potentially harm your brand if people just think you are trying to advertise to them, so it has to be aligned with your website objectives as Kristi said. If you want to use them, in addition to Kristi’s great advice, just remember that above the fold is the prime area where ads seem to do best: Top Header, Sidebar above the fold, and Inside Content above the fold. Google will only allow you to show a maximum of 3 at one time, and that is usually a good guide should you decide to utilize them. Hope the advice helps!

  • not enough traffic i would say @donal576

  • Thanks!.What other factors.

  • Without the traffic to support it, Adsense is a black hole occupying space all over your site.
