Backlink juice: Is a guest post worth more than a comment? (9 posts)

Topic tags: comments, Google+, SEO
  • I don’t know… is it? They are both ‘just’  links, after all. I would hope that a guest post would get more human click throughs than a comment but is it worth any more to Google?

  • @abigailgortonMost blogs give comments the nofollow attribute, meaning they don’t pass along any link juice.

I am under the impression being above the fold gets more weight, but that is more a hunch than anything

  • @robpeck Yes – I am with you on ‘above the fold’ – I also think it matters whether you are the 7th link on the page or the 47th. And I believe the cut off for any links is 50 or 60. Hmm… I add a ‘no nofollow’ plugin to sites I build… it would be nice if everyone did!

  • A guest post from a a blogger who has a big following has more “juice” than a comment. Why? Because that blogger is going to tell his networks to go read the post, comment and help show off that she’s posted on your blog. A comment generally generates less hoopla.

  • @abigailgorton The things that usually makes the guest author link more powerful than a comment link are:

    • Guest author links are sometimes above the content of the post, and if not, then right at the bottom.  They will almost always be above the comments.
    • Comments are typically are marked as nofollow in the website’s code, meaning that Google will essentially ignore them.
    • More people reading the post are likely to click on the author bio over links in the comments.
    • If anyone shares the post on their blog, they might link to the author’s site as well.

  • In addition to what @kristi-hines says, you also have the slightly less tangible benefits to your reputation.  Writing guest posts is a great way to get your name out there as an expert in your field.  Writing comments doesn’t do this in my opinion.  I’ve attained several slots in mainstream media recently due to people finding my articles.  I doubt they’d have done so from comments I leave on blogs :)

  • @jfouts @kristi-hines @adigaskell Thanks all! That all does make sense.

  • @adigaskell  @abigailgorton Speaking of getting your name out there, any site that you guest post for that connects to your Google+ profile will boost your authorship rankings in Google.  Another plus in search results that doesn’t happen with comments!

  • All good points but… don’t throw out comments completely. Even if you don’t get link juice in terms of Google, a thoughtful, engaging, and useful comment can generate some traffic from curious readers who follow the comment thread. It’s all about the “indirect” link juice you can generate.  Furthermore, a guest post takes much more time and effort to create and promote. You have to factor that in as well.
