Are you using analytics to create content? (12 posts)

  • I found when trying to decide what to post and when going through the analytics has helped show me what search terms has been driving traffic to my site. Then crafting content around those terms.

Are you using analytics to create content? If so have you seen an increase in your sites metrics?

  • I have not tried that. I generally start with a message I want to drive then see what keywords make sense. I suspect we might be splitting hairs but…

  • That’s always a great strategy! Another good one is Google Trends ;)

  • @ptwylie @melissaagnes even google webmaster tool can also help in this regard!

  • @ptwylie Google Analytics offers a few different types of data that can be used for content ideas.  Here are some ways I use mine…

    • Look at your top Keywords in Traffic Sources > Sources > Organic to see what keywords lead people to your site.  Create content around those terms / phrases.
    • Set up Site Search and see what people are looking for when they are on your site. Create content around those terms / phrases.
    • Look at your top content – specifically topics that get the most traffic, most average pages viewed, and least bounce rate.  Create similar content.

  • @moinshaikh  @melissaagnes Melissa that’s a great tactic..also see whats trending on FB insights see if there is any cross correlation. Google webmaster tools is probably, a better place to see what keywords are driving the traffic. As Google is changing the way keywords are showing up in the dashboard.

  • @kristi-hines Wow..great points Christi! I really like the site search idea. Yes, top content on a site is always prime for re-purposing. I try to take those pieces of content and make them re-live again, trying to tie the piece into something current. That approach works really good with news items.

  • @kristi-hines  Thanks for the great ideas!

  • @ptwylie @kristi-hines @everyone…. I will try this out!

  • I never set out to do this, but I have written posts after seeing certain things in the key words analytics. Often, an entire question is in the search engine info and so I answer it.

The analytics also help me know what topics are most popular — but I don’t want to be ruled by that!

Bottom line: Yes, analytics are helpful in directing content production.

  • @judithgotwald  It all really depends on writing engaging content. The analytics tells me what search terms people are finding me, most read content and other really key metrics however, I agree totally with you it is not the end all.
What we all need to be striving for is to wrote for engagement, every step in the sales funnel requires different content. Then even after sales writing content to build evangelists to drive referrals.
Interestingly, I just posted on my blog about just this thing. No, I am not trying to any promotion :) however, the slideshare was furnished by Jodi Harris of the Content Marketing Institute

  • I have used analytics and search results as writing prompts in the past. It works. I’m not doing it right now, but I should do more of it.

Sadly, my highest traffic articles are on topics I’m no longer interested in, and don’t (as far as I know) have enough traction to monetize. =(
