Are You Just Another Dumb Blogger? @FoxNews Might Think So!

The author posed the following question:

As a blogger what experiences have you had with talking to people outside of the internet world and getting their reactions to what they believe blogging and internet marketing really is?

SME Club members, What say you?

  • @juleswebb Just saw that video.  I’ve talked to lots of people outside of the internet world about what I do – some get it, but most kind of do the Madagascar penguin’s “smile and wave” when I start talking about it.  I find the best way to explain different blogging aspects include:

    • Blogging: I write articles to educate people on ____.  What makes it different from, say, Wikipedia is that I give people an open forum on each article to discuss it.
    • Affiliate Marketing: It’s like when you buy a car, and your sales person gives you his business cards and the promise that if you refer him a new customer, he will give you $150. Or when you refer a new resident to your apartment community and they give you $100 off your next month’s rent.
    • Other Ways to Make Money Blogging: I can sell block  advertisements just like magazines.  I can market a service that I provide to a wider online audience.  I can write a book, skip the whole publishing mess, and publish it myself.  PLUS I can save the environment by distributing that book in digital format.
    • Social Media Marketing: It’s like going to an online networking event, except instead of introducing myself to complete strangers and hoping they will be interested in what I have to say, I can narrow down the field to just people with certain interests based on their online profile and focus my interactions with just them.  Plus I don’t have to rely on being in the same location – I can network worldwide so long as we both speak the same language.

  • @kristi-hines That’s a great breakdown. Can I copy and paste that into my notes so when clients ask I have a well thought out response to give them?

  • @juleswebb Definitely!  :)

  • @kristi-hines Thank you!
