Adwords tutorials for dummies? (7 posts)

  • I have spent the whole morning trying to understand how google adwords work. I know the basics, but I just haven’t got a grip on it.

I type in one word but the local suggestions that come up are very minimal (22)

Does anyone know of some really good video tutorials on this subject.

  • @petaminter12 hey mate, i watched few videos from Google teaching adwords basics, hope you’d like them. Here’s the link: http://www.google.com/ads/learn/#utm_source=lwg&utm_medium=hc&utm_campaign=navigation

Also, if you like, you can go for another one at: http://www.lynda.com/Google-AdWords-tutorials/Essential-Training/73287-2.html which gives step by step guide like a well organized book. Thanks,

    Hi Peta,

Local searches often bring smaller results. However Google does have many videos out there on how to learn the system, heres a link to the adwords video library - http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/adwords/select/library/

  • Here are a few tips for AdWords:
-Google sometimes sends $100 free coupons.  Those are really good because you can play around and get to know the system for free in the beginning.  See if Google will send you one.  Also hosting companies like HostMonster sometimes do promotions so check with them too.

-If you want to find good sets of keywords you can use tools like SpyFu.com and see what other websites in your niche are using.  You can also type in competitor’s website URL into Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool and it will tell you what keywords they rank for.

-Set your daily limit to something you feel comfortable spending (like say $10) – that way you can do some test campaigns and watch them over a few weeks to see how they perform.

-The best tip I could give you is when you send PPC traffic to your site, it’s probably a good idea to capture their email with a squeeze page and then follow up with them (maybe email them or send them to an autoresponder).  If you send PPC traffic to your website and it’s not optimized for lead capture, you won’t get your money’s worth out of campaigns.

  • Thanks @tedksocial for the tips – I’m still working out which keywords to use.

  • If anyone needs coupons just let me know, I have a bunch (we are an AdWords Partner.) Do you have any specific questions? Happy to help.
Agree with what @tedksocial said. Along with his points definitely set up conversion tracking and link to your analytics. A few other tips which come to mind:

    • Create logical ad groups sooner rather than later. Perhaps broken up by service or geography.
    • Have at least 4 ads for each group.
    • Make sure your landing page (not the website as a whole, just the destination URL) is relevant to the keyword you are bidding on and the ad copy you are using. Quality Score can be very important to being in the black on PPC campaigns.
    • Place the retargeting tags. Even if you aren’t planning on running a campaign, you never know. We are having a lot of fun with retargeting lately.
    • Don’t give them too much to do. State the information, give an offer, request their business. Visitors get lost on too big of a website.
Hope this helps. Go get em!
