Advice Needed: build a blog internally OR via Blog tool? (8 posts)

Topic tags: Blog, blogs
  • Hi all. I’m a digital strategist for a large med device company and my role is to support all online initiatives related to HR. A request came to me from our internship team wanting to build a blog and have that link “live” within our Careers page (they already have content here, FB link). My initial thought was yes, this is easy but now am rethinking this.

In doing research I’ve seen the following scenarios: A.) build an internal blog and promote externally via FB & Twitter OR B.) place an icon on your website to a blog site.

While I have a personal blog, I have yet to build one for a business and want to understand the pros/cons in both scenarios. Obviously the goal is to get rankings and visibility, but before we move forward I’d like to give options and discuss the best plan moving forward.

    Appreciate your insight!

  • @bridgetteschwartzbauer Build it internally. It helps your search engine ranking.
Basically, Google looks at two important factors on a website: frequency and recency.
Or, how often do you do it, and, when’s the last time you did it. The more you do it, the more Google shows up, and eventually believes your website to be valuable.
If you have an internal blog, your website changes as often as you publish new blog posts. Publish more posts, and Google shows up more often.
If you have an external blog, Google will see THAT as the valuable resource, and you could run into the issue where your blog actually outranks your website.

  • Thanks Erik. Sorry my “topic/question” was out of order. I didn’t realize I couldn’t cut/paste content and place it into the forum directly, so I had to re-type my inquiry above.

  • I agree with Erik. An internal blog has the advantage that it supports the website in the search engine. Also you will always own the content and have more control over the blog software.

  • @bridgetteschwartzbauer Definitely go with building it internally – this way, any social shares, links, etc. that you get to the blog posts will help increase the authority and popularity of the main website as a whole.

  • @bridgetteschwartzbauer  I’ll belly up to the “build the blog internally” bar! It will raise your ranking by adding additional keywords to your site.

  • yes – an integrated blog with the existing site is definitely the way I would go.  Will give a consistent look and feel as well as the benefits others have already listed.

  • Thanks everyone, this is great feedback to share with my team.
