Advice for Choosing a Wordpress Theme (14 posts)

  • Has anyone come across a Theme (hopefully Studiopress) which has all of these functions – I know some are covered by plug-ins, but I’m having trouble finding these:

    1.  A Scrolling Banner which also includes scrolling text over the pictures.

    2.  Four Customized Widgets at bottom of page capability, one specifically with scrolling pics featuring their clients logos.

    3.  Ability to make page 1-2-3 column for individual pages (I know a lot of paid themes do this).

    4.  A table plug-in which allows text AND links to other pages within the site and can be customized to fill a whole page OR fit within a column. (Any plug-in recommendations?)

    5.  Ability to have Private Login for members/clients. (Is that a plug-in?)

I found the Corporate Child Theme in Studiopress which covers some but not all of the above requirements.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

  • @dcoville001 Hi Diane.

    1.  When you say scrolling banner, do you mean the content slider like this StudioPress theme has?

    http://demo.studiopress.com/associate/

    2. Most of the StudioPress themes come with three or four featured widgets at the bottom.  If you just want to show a rotating image of logos, you can have a graphic designer create one GIF file that changes logos at specific intervals.

    3. StudioPress does have different layouts for each page you create – usually up to three columns where 2 columns are sidebars and one column is the main page content.  Using the Widget Logic plugin, you can create different sidebar widgets and specify which widget will be shown for a particular page to create unique sidebars for different pages.

    4. Can you show an example of this that you have seen elsewhere?

    5.  I think that is a plugin - http://getpremise.com/ is created by the same people as StudioPress so there should be some way to connect the plugin to the child themes.

  • One of the many mistakes we make is relying on plugins. Before you know it your site becomes bloated and clogged thus slowing it down.  IMO you should look for a theme that is easily customised using widgets in page and post areas.  I know it takes a little effort to learn basics but with the right instruction and assistance it can be satisfying.

On top of this you need to consider that very soon your ideas might change and you start looking for solutions thus adding more plugins.  Problem is all the additional code used to accomplish what you need just adds to page load.

Two themes I recommend people look at are Genesis and Thesis.  I use the latter because I joined a membership site that has live Q&A sessions weekly, step by step video and live instruction plus an active video library of over 700 videos.  The developer cretes plugins exclusively for the Thesis Theme and makes my life much easier.

Hope this helps and I know time is always a factor but remember….”conent is the key”.  People will always visit your site if they need what you have.

  • I would take a look at http://themeforest.net and you can ask the developer if they have those options.

  • @mlm2gether Dennis.., what is that ‘membership’ your talking about? I use Thesis and need to get more down with it (to minimize the bloating.., indeed).

  • I think Kristi laid it out pretty well that studiopress’ Genesis framework and associated themes can handle most of what you are looking for.  They also have a slider plugin if you want to incorporate that into one of their themes that do not automatically have that functionality.  http://www.studiopress.com/plugins/genesis-slider

For your table requirement, you may want to check out the following plugin – I banged it around some but have not fully utilized – may have what you need: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-table-reloaded/

  • @kristi-hines, @mlm2together, @danhoward, @rogiernoort, @egaile  I want to thank everyone for your input.  This was just the kind of feedback I was looking for and will help me provide the best recommendations for my client.  Thanks again!

  • It’s important to understand the difference between layout and functionality. Many of the things you’re requesting are simply design considerations that most certainly don’t need a plugin to achieve. Plugins are good to add functionality, but I definitely agree with @mlm2gether in that far too many people rely on plugins when they should instead, invest in hiring a professional that knows his or her way around WP from a developer’s standpoint. You’ll save yourself headache and money in the long run.

Personally, I also stay away from frameworks like Genesis and Thesis, as they too, have WAY too much code bloat and can slow your site down immensely. I create my own themes with the layout I require and try to build all my own functionality first, before relying on a proprietary third-party option.

  • I am with @kellygarrett and would be careful with too many plugins. I would also suggest a responsive design so that your mobile users (or any screen size for that matter) can view your website since it is a flexible layout. There are also a lot of templates/themes that do have way too much code bloat and search engines do not like slow sites or crawling through massive lines of code to get to your content. With this said, be sure to look into security. I have noticed hackers going crazy with bots looking for vulnerabilities.

  • I would love to add that functionality is very important, the user experience has to be an easy, quick loading, find-what-I-want visit. I feel that the goals of each business need to out way the bells and whistles of plugins. I also agree that hiring a technical partner is perfect solution, as the designer and programmer work beautifully as a team to satisfy the clients needs.

  • Hi @dcoville001,

Have you checked out the themes from http://www.themedy.com? Themedy creates child themes for Genesis from Studiopress as well as for Thesis.

A few genesis-child-themes from Themedy cover your requirements. Like a slider with text that is dynamically picked up from your posts, 4 footer widgets etc.

I’m not sure about the table though – they do have a plugin called Themedy Visual Designer – that may have a table in it – but you’ll have to check that yourself.

About the 3 column pages – if you are looking for widgetized content thats easily done as suggested by @kristi-hines.

If it isn’t widgetized content, simply use the column short-code. Since i’m talking about Themedy here, you will find that their visual designer gives you the option to select columns (like 1/2 ; 1/3; 1/4 or 1/6) depending on your need. Just use these shortcodes to get the formatting you are after.

Just FYI though, i’m not associated with Themedy in any way. I accidentally discovered Themedy and from the themes that I have seen, their code & flexibility is simply amazing.

    Hope that helped,
    @ShipraSaid

  • Not everyone has the luxury or know-how to code from scratch :)

I have used Genesis for several years now and am very happy with it. I have a few sites that are plug-in happy. There is no slow down on small sites, so don’t stress over that too much. Granted, if your site has thousands of visitors a day, code bloat and too many plugins could become an issue.

That said, not all themes are user friendly out of the box. I have bought more than one theme from ThemeForest.com, downloaded it and once getting to the theme admin area threw my hands up in disgust because it required pages worth of reading documentation to figure it all out.

At least Genesis and those of that caliber are user friendly and highly intuitive. Though not all of the child themes are created by expert designers (I’ve bought 2 recently that are so not up to par).

I prefer Genesis because of the ability to use the “Simple Hooks” and “Simple Edits” plug ins to add code exactly where you want it.

As for the table function, just like @Egaile said, http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-table-reloaded/ , is a good one. I have it installed and have used it. I’m self taught when it comes to css and html, I’m still not 100% comfy with DIVs yet either lol

Speaking of code!! Every time I post I must remember to double hard return after every paragraph. It’s annoying and makes reading a PITA. Could we get that fixed?

  • You could switch and move over to http://www.solostream.com/ and opt for one of their responsive designs. You will then be ahead of the game. They also have very good tutorials, help forums, and clean code!

  • I would suggest elegantthemes, they not only have the most impresive themes, but they have everything already installed, you can go live with your blog or website without installing any plugin. : Members Only Feature, amazing jquery effects, overlays, contact forms, image sliders, responsive designs they work on mobile devices out of the box and more.
