Adding Social Icons to Wordpress (4 posts)

Topic tags: Icons, Wordpress
  • I have a Wordpress.com (haters gonna hate) blog and I’m looking for way to add social icons to my sidebar that look half-way decent. I know there are all kinds of plugins for the self-hosted .org but I haven’t made it over there yet. On that thought, should I just go ahead and switch over because of the many extras that it offers. Love your thoughts on this.

  • @susanavello I always suggest switching over to  a self-hosted WordPress.org blog, especially if you are going to use your blog to make money online or promote your business.  If you think you will want to move it in the future, it probably isn’t a bad idea to move it sooner than later so that you don’t build a lot of traffic and subscribers to one URL (yourblog.wordpress.com) and have to port them to your new domain (yourdomain.com).

If you don’t plan on moving, or even need to, you can use the Text Widget and then add the code provided for the Twitter follow button (https://twitter.com/about/resources/buttons), Facebook like button for pages (https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/), Facebook subscribe button for profiles (https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/subscribe/), etc.

Alternatively, you can use the Text Widget, grab some matching social icons, and link the icons to your profiles using HTML code.

  • Thanks, I already have the domain name set to my blog just would like the greater usability (is that a word?) to incorporate the plugins and look more professional. Hmm….now to decide what to do. Will I lose my current followers if I already have the domain name?

    Interesting.

    Thanks for the tidbits.

  • If you already have your domain name but are using the .com interface it’s quite easy to transfer over, leave a holding page type message directing your followers to your new blog, which will have all your content (including comments) on it.  Not only will you have all the functionality you want on a self hosted blog you will also have the security that Wordpress.com can’t close you down if they have a change of policy etc.

Message me if you want me to “talk you through it” :)
