A Super-Newbie Wordpress Question (8 posts)

  • Pardon my blatant ignorance of Wordpress here (I’m still very new to it), but MUST a WP site include a blog, or can it be built without one?

And if the latter is possible, is that option only available for self-hosted WP themes, or is that option also available for the free WP.com themes as well?

  • No, the wordpress part that is the “blog” are the posts — you can build WP themed pages that act just like pages… I don’t know if you can do that on wp.com’s though — but we do it for plenty of clients with their own domain names (and for $12.99 for a name and $4 a mo. on GoDaddy, why would anyone want to host on someone else’s dot.com anymore? :)

  • You can create a website without a blog. Go to the Settings section of the blog and specify what the front page should be.

  • @mellissathomas You really don’t need to ask us to “pardon” you :-)  Questions are what the forums are for.

  • After creating a PAGE go to your WP page and com/wp-admin/options-reading.php the reading settings.
from  Front page displays select  the page you want to appear as your home page.
You can also create other pages, like a landing page, if you want.
Keep in mind that you ARE doing this on the WP site and that is a blog.

  • While WordPress is a blogging program, you can make a website without using it AS a blog.

Simply set your front page as already described above. Make your other pages and you never have to use the blog if you don’t want to.

    Think of it this way:

    write POST – it’s a blog format

write PAGE – you can use it as a website page
Use the menu function to add or exclude specific pages and links.

So yes, you can use Wordpress to create a web site vs a blog. The theme you use is mostly irrelevant. You could, in theory, use whatever theme you want and only create pages with no posts (blog). Whether you use the Wordpress.com site or are self-hosted.

Keep in mind that what you can do on the free Wordpress.com site with themes and plugins is pretty limited.

  • Hi Mellissa, wordpress is by default a blog engine and it has “POSTS” option for writing blog posts. Blog posts has comments.

You can make your wordpress as a static website as mentioned above. Some themes such as thesis puts comments option in “PAGES” so you have to deactivate comments from thesis design options.

  • Thanks so much, you guys! Your input is a huge help. @xtamal @ldylarke @richardmclaughlin @erikdeckers @sharijstauch

@mspseudolus: You have a point there, Kirsten. Guess that comes with the newbie territory. I use in-person etiquette online as well. =)
