What’s New This Week

Instagram Adds Boomerang, Mention Tags, and Links to Instagram Stories: Instagram introduced two new tools “to help you make your story even more fun, Boomerang and mentions,” and announced that it’s starting “to test links inside some stories.” Boomerang, which “lets you turn everyday moments into something fun and unexpected,” can be selected as an additional format option under the Record button. Boomerang records and stitches together “a burst of photos into a mini video that plays forward and backward.” Users can also tag and mention people in stories just as they do in Instagram captions and comments. These updates for Instagram Stories are available as part of Instagram version 9.7 available for iOS in the Apple App Store. It’s also available on Android and Windows.

Twitter Rolls Out Quick Replies and Welcome Messages in Direct Messages: Twitter introduced two new Direct Message features, quick replies and welcome messages, which are “designed to help businesses create rich, responsive, full-service experiences that directly advance the work of customer service teams and open up new possibilities for how people engage with businesses on Twitter.” These features “make it easier for businesses to guide people to better outcomes through a combination of simple automation and human service.” When used together, “businesses can reduce wait times and educate people on the best ways to interact with them.” Quick replies and welcome messages are available now to all users with access to the latest version of the Twitter app.

YouTube Rolls Out End Screens Feature for All Creators: YouTube launched End Screens, “a new mobile-friendly tool that lets you engage viewers right as your video finishes and encourages them to watch more on their devices.” End screens make it easier to create and showcase “hard-to-miss thumbnail overlays that prompt viewers to watch your other videos, subscribe to your channel, visit collaborators’ channels and more” in the last 15-20 seconds of your videos and allow you “to reach more viewers on desktop and mobile.” YouTube announced that the End Screens feature is now “available to every creator on YouTube.”

Facebook Introduces Recommendation Engine and New Call-to-Action Buttons for Local Events and Businesses: Facebook introduced “a variety of new features that help you… discover new things in the world around you, decide what to do or where to go and connect with local businesses in easier and faster ways.” Facebook rolled out a new Recommendations feature that makes it easier to gather, map, and organize local business or service recommendations from your friends, and will revamp the Events bookmark to simplify searching for and getting the latest information on local events. The newest version of the Events dashboard will be available in the U.S. “in the coming weeks.”

In addition, Facebook introduced several “new ways for people to take action faster once they’ve found something they want to do or a place they want to go.” With new call-to-action buttons rolling out on Facebook, users can now order food, request an appointment, get a quote, or purchase tickets to a movie or event without ever leaving a business’s Facebook page. These new experiences are currently only available in the U.S., but more ways to “communicate directly with businesses on your time and terms” are expected to be announced in the “coming months.”

Pinterest Introduces More Targeting Options for Ad Campaigns: Pinterest’s enhanced ad targeting options make it “easier for you to get your ideas in front of the right audience at just the right time.” According to the Pinterest for Business blog, marketers using Ads Manager can now create audiences “built on people’s interest in a specific Pin that links to [their] website” and “retarget five specific actions: clicks, comments, saves, likes and closeups.” In addition, Pinterest announced that now “it’s also possible to create audiences from the data associated with actions people take on your site” such as browsing a category, making a purchase, or signing up for your services.

Simply complete and submit the Campaign Planner Access Request Form to Facebook and wait to be approved.

Instagram Rolls Out Save Draft Feature: Instagram released a Save Draft feature that allows users to “start creating a post, … save it as a draft and share it later.” After adding effects, filters, a caption, or a location to a photo or video, users can tap the back arrow at the top left of the screen where a new Save Draft button will appear. Drafts will be saved in the user’s Library, where they can return to continue editing their post and share it later.

Facebook Rolls Out New Custom Ad Targeting Option: Facebook quietly rolled out the ability for brands to create custom audiences that target users who have viewed their canvas ads on Facebook. Canvas was introduced earlier this year and was designed to be “a full-screen ad experience built for bringing brands and products to life on mobile.” With the release of canvas ads, marketers can now build fully customized multimedia stories using a combination of text, links, images, video, call-to-action buttons, and product feeds to bring brand stories to life.
