Instagram Rolls Out Live Video to All U.S. Users: Following an announcement a few weeks ago, Instagram is rolling out Live video in Stories “to everyone in the US over the next few days.” With this new video feature in Stories, users can instantly go live by swiping into the Stories camera mode and tapping the Live button. The Next Web reports that the live videos will disappear once the recording is done. Also, a “Top Live” section in the Explore tab will direct users to “some of the best ongoing footage” on Instagram.

Facebook Updates Metrics and Reporting Standards: Facebook rolled out several updates to its metrics and reporting standards to give its partners “more clarity and confidence” about the insights it provides. These updates include increased third-party verification to review and validate data on impressions and views, the formation of a Measurement Council that will address the “growing need for measurement standards tied to business outcomes,” a new internal review process to ensure Facebook’s metrics are “clear and up to date,” and regular communication about future updates. Facebook also addressed and corrected several bugs that led to inaccurate data over the last few months.

Earlier this week, Facebook admitted to miscalculating the 7-day or 28-day organic reach in its Page Insights. Recode reports that the new numbers “may differ significantly from what publishers are used to seeing” and cited one incident in which “a metric that measures how many people can see a publisher’s content on its page may shrink by 55 percent.” However, Facebook assures publishers and advertisers that none of the restated numbers affected paid reach and that it “still delivered what [publishers] paid for.”

Facebook points to “bugs in their calculations, not a flaw in Facebook’s methodology” for the discrepancy. According to an announcement on the Facebook Newsroom site, it will fix this bug “in the next few weeks” and will continue “making an improvement to Page organic reach to match what [it has] done for paid reach.”

Instagram Adds Boomerang, Mention Tags, and Links to Instagram Stories: Instagram introduced two new tools “to help you make your story even more fun, Boomerang and mentions,” and announced that it’s starting “to test links inside some stories.” Boomerang, which “lets you turn everyday moments into something fun and unexpected,” can be selected as an additional format option under the Record button. Boomerang records and stitches together “a burst of photos into a mini video that plays forward and backward.” Users can also tag and mention people in stories just as they do in Instagram captions and comments. These updates for Instagram Stories are available as part of Instagram version 9.7 available for iOS in the Apple App Store. It’s also available on Android and Windows.

Facebook Introduces Recommendation Engine and New Call-to-Action Buttons for Local Events and Businesses: Facebook introduced “a variety of new features that help you… discover new things in the world around you, decide what to do or where to go and connect with local businesses in easier and faster ways.” Facebook rolled out a new Recommendations feature that makes it easier to gather, map, and organize local business or service recommendations from your friends, and will revamp the Events bookmark to simplify searching for and getting the latest information on local events. The newest version of the Events dashboard will be available in the U.S. “in the coming weeks.”

In addition, Facebook introduced several “new ways for people to take action faster once they’ve found something they want to do or a place they want to go.” With new call-to-action buttons rolling out on Facebook, users can now order food, request an appointment, get a quote, or purchase tickets to a movie or event without ever leaving a business’s Facebook page. These new experiences are currently only available in the U.S., but more ways to “communicate directly with businesses on your time and terms” are expected to be announced in the “coming months.”
