Can you use the most simple language to get your point across? Could it be misinterpreted?</p><p>This doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean you should be super-brief, but it does mean that you can crystallize your ideas and make sure you&#8217;re very clear on what the recipient should understand, take away and do.</p><p><strong>Develop a hook. </strong>Why is this interesting, why should anyone care and what&#8217;s different in a beneficial way?</p><p><strong>Test your message to make sure it&#8217;s understood</strong>. A complicated message isn&#8217;t going to be fully understood, won&#8217;t be remembered, and therefore will certainly not be forwarded or acted on.</p><h3>#2: Find Your Space</h3><p>If noise is getting in the way of your message being noticed, <strong>don&#8217;t add to your problem by choosing the most busy times and locations!</strong></p><p>Yes there will be more people who might potentially see your messages at peak times, but you have to weigh that against the fact that there are more competing messages at those times too.</p><p>The same with venue. If everyone else is competing for attention on a certain site, in a certain group, presenting in a certain way, you need to test to see if an alternative time, location or format is going to work better for you.</p><h3>#3: Use Appropriate Channels</h3><p>Following the previous point, <strong>where and how you present your message is as important as what you say</strong>.</p><p>Rather than just stating your facts, <strong>perhaps you need to tell a story</strong>. Pulling at the heartstrings with a human interest narrative often has more impact than a set of bullet points.</p><p><strong>It might be that all you need to do is zig when others zag</strong>; for example, <a href="http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/how-to-create-headlines-that-go-viral-with-social-media/">use short headlines</a> when others are wordy, or a long headline when everyone else is brief. Perhaps others only use text and you can use video. Break out of the mold and find your place to breathe.</p><h3>#4: Spread Your Message</h3><div class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 180px"><img src="http://cdn.socialmediaexaminer.com/images/cgspreadyourmessage.png?9d7bd4" alt="When you have honed your message, dont be afraid to spread it" width="170" height="134" /><p class="wp-caption-text">When you&#39;ve honed your message, don&#39;t be afraid to spread it.</p></div><p>Don&#8217;t think you have to stick with one medium.  There&#8217;s no reason why you can&#8217;t go with all of them. <strong>Re-purpose your conten</strong>t into whichever packaging is required.</p><p>Get it into the hands of colleagues, contacts and friends. These are your seeders and sneezers who will start the viral process.</p><p><strong><a href="http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/how-to-add-retweet-buttons-in-your-pdf-documents/">Tell people you want them to share</a>, email and retweet your message far and wide</strong>. Tell them why it&#8217;s important and exactly what they need to do.</p><p><strong>You need to make it as easy as possible </strong>and remove barriers such as opt-ins or logins. <a href="http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/6-blog-add-ons-that-spur-social-media-activity/">Just give them the content and the tools to share it</a>. Make it as easy as one click with an obvious benefit and they&#8217;ll do the rest.</p><h3>#5: Get Help</h3><div class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 176px"><img src="http://cdn.socialmediaexaminer.com/images/cggethelp.jpg?9d7bd4" alt="Ask for help" width="166" height="240" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Ask for help. You can&#39;t do this on your own!</p></div><p>Stop thinking solo. You&#8217;re not going to be able to get much reach on your own.</p><p><strong>Reach out and ask for help.</strong> <strong>Pitch your message directly to key influencers.</strong></p><p>Yes, some will reject you. Some will listen, then not follow through. But it&#8217;s a numbers game, and worth the effort.</p><p>Don&#8217;t make it about you or your mission, <strong>make it about them and their audience</strong>.</p><p>Explain briefly what the hook is and why they should care, tell them how to take the next step and leave it for them to come back to you.</p><h3>#6: Appeal to Ego</h3><p>People are most engrossed in their own self-interest, so play into that.</p><p>Use &#8220;you&#8221; and &#8220;your.&#8221; <strong>Make it about them, their needs, goals, wants and desires.</strong> Relate it to their own history, situation, reputation and behavior.</p><h3>#7: Cut the Clutter.</h3><p>You need to <strong>remove anything that doesn&#8217;t directly support your message or argument.</strong></p><p>Remove fancy phrases, clever wording or embellishments. They sell sex and fear because that&#8217;s what people respond to. <strong>We&#8217;re hardwired to look out for danger and problems</strong> and to follow other base instincts.</p><p>If you&#8217;re having trouble being heard, <strong>try turning your message into a warning, highlight a problem or emphasize the dangers</strong>.</p><h3>#9: Use Keywords.</h3><p>Another element of our brain programming is to be on the lookout for keywords and phrases that interest us. Rather than using clever headlines, <strong>key into the words people are looking for</strong>, not just in searches but while scanning down headlines.</p><p>People are always on the lookout for what interests them, consciously and subconsciously, and when these particular words or phrases pop into view their reticular activating system will say &#8220;Hey, look!&#8221;</p><p>If your message is about Apple or the iPhone, mention those words. If you&#8217;re talking about Seth Godin or Natalie Portman, use their names.</p><h3>#10: Stick to One Point.</h3><p>This whole article builds to one argument. <strong>One point</strong>. Do the same.</p><h3>Summary</h3><p>Getting your message out there is not always about <em>what</em> you say but as much <em>how</em> you say it. Don&#8217;t just shovel your messages out into your social media channels. Think carefully about your audience, what they like and react to, and what else is going on within those services and networks.</p><p><em><strong>Most of all&#8230; It&#8217;s not what you say that matters, but what your readers hear!</strong></em></p><p>It&#8217;s your job to keep crafting and honing your message until you get it right. Whether you&#8217;re focusing on a global audience or a local one, social media can help you get visibility and help you forge connections.</p><p>In this article, I&#8217;ll share some tips to help you leverage social media to gain more exposure.</p><h3>#1: Reap What You Sow</h3><p>What are you aiming for? What is your goal?</p><p>If you want to get yourself known, social media is a great way to build visibility and a platform. Getting known might be your goal or it might be a means to an end. Again,<strong> social media can help you build connections that pay off in terms of opportunities and offers</strong>.<span id="more-2685"></span></p><p>At the very least, when you do the right things in social media, you&#8217;re building a profile that represents you in the best possible light when anyone wants to look you up. It is a rare potential employer who will not do a quick Google search, and apparently even potential dates now do this routinely!</p><h3>#2: Model Real Life</h3><p><img class="alignright" src="http://cdn.socialmediaexaminer.com/images/cgshare.png?9d7bd4" alt="" width="239" height="146" />Social media grew out of real-world social rules and therefore <strong>what works in real life works well in social media</strong>, but with wider distribution and accelerated cause and effect.</p><p>Often people say to me that social media does not work, but what they really mean is they tried to extract value before they put any in. In fact, at the time of this writing I almost got into a protracted debate on Twitter about this very thing. Because this one person didn&#8217;t see any results, he believed social media &#8220;didn&#8217;t work.&#8221; The problem is, social media does not work for people who just want to take and be selfish, so he is setting himself up for a self-fulfilling prophecy.</p><p>You can&#8217;t withdraw very long from an empty social capital account. Essentially,<strong> if you want to get out value, then you need to start putting value in</strong>.</p><h3>#3: Be Likeable</h3><p>Another aspect of social media engagement is that your basic interactions are communicating more than the 140-character status updates. People also read between the lines. Again, this can work for or against you.</p><p><strong>Brands are built through experience just as much as what you say and any image you create. The brands you love and hate are much more about how they have treated you than their logos and corporate mission statements!</strong></p><p>The same is true on a personal brand level. It&#8217;s about treating people well and giving them a positive experience with you. It really helps if you like people because <strong>you are going to need to be consistently a good person to know</strong>.</p><p>Using light humor, being kind, sharing about more than just your work—including your interests—allow people to connect with you on a human level as well as a business and technical level.</p><p>Beyond this we have to be aware of boundaries and limitations to sharing. We have all seen the damage that can be done through &#8220;overshare&#8221; or Too Much Information, and also what we find humorous might well put people off, or even cause emotional or professional damage.</p><p>Consider a popular blogger who is constantly on the attack, belittling people, making fun of people, &#8220;digging up dirt&#8221; and so on. Yes, he will gather a following—bullies often do—but how do these kinds of tactics affect long-term relationships and loyalty?</p><p>At SXSW I had a discussion about this very topic and we realized many of the highly visible people who used this approach 4 or 5 years ago are now seldom heard from and nobody will take their calls.</p><p>Social karma works in the negative as well as the positive, and the Internet has a LONG memory!</p><p><strong>Does This Really Work?</strong></p><p>At this point you might still be skeptical. <strong>So to reassure you that there is some real cause and effect going on here, just look at your own social media activity.</strong></p><ul><li><strong>Who do you follow?</strong> Think about your top three social media users and what they have in common.</li><li><strong>Which blogs do you read?</strong> Again, which are your &#8220;must-read&#8221; blogs?</li><li><strong>When have you had the best results?</strong> Think back to when you had your best win. What did you do?</li><li><strong>How do you attract new contacts?</strong> When you want a social media or list boost, what works best for you?</li><li><strong>What can you test today?</strong> Still skeptical? Good! Test, verify—what can you try today to move your metrics needle?</li></ul><p><strong>I am 100% sure that when you put out good, valuable, positive stuff—when you share only the best—that&#8217;s when you will get the best results</strong>. It also follows that the people you are most attracted to or listen to most are the people you get the most value from, be that entertainment or education, and with whom you feel the best connection.</p><h3>#4: Share, Share, Share</h3><p>Tactically this is about sharing good stuff. If you want to position yourself as an expert, then share what you know.</p><p>The more you share good stuff, the more people will want to listen to you. Even better, if you <strong>share your expertise with good stuff from other people mixed in, it shows you&#8217;re generous and have your followers&#8217; best interests at heart</strong> rather than pure self-promotion.</p><ul><li>Answer questions in LinkedIn.</li><li>Share links, videos and anything useful that you find in Facebook and Twitter.</li><li>Post your slide decks to Slideshare.</li><li>Upload advice videos and demonstrations to YouTube.</li><li>Write valuable content in your blog and answer comments.</li><li>Invite people to ask you questions on your Facebook fan page, Twitter and your blog.</li></ul><h3>#5: Conduct a Whuffie Audit</h3><p>Cory Doctorow of BoingBoing fame invented the futuristic reputation, or social capital–based currency, of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whuffie" target="_blank">Whuffie</a>. Some days I wish Whuffie really existed and that just by looking someone up we could see what kind of person they were and how much they added to society. Unfortunately we do not have Whuffie yet, but you can <strong>&#8220;audit&#8221; yourself to see how much social capital you are generating</strong>.</p><p>Keep an eye on your key metrics to see if they are growing and what behavior is influencing them:</p><ul><li><strong>Followers, friends and subscriber counts—</strong>How many people you have following you is not the best metric, but it does tell you if you&#8217;re attracting versus annoying people!</li><li><strong>Retweets, clicks and shares—</strong>If people want to share your stuff, it&#8217;s a hint that what you are putting out is valuable.</li><li><strong>Comments, favorites, discussions—</strong>Can you spark discussion and debate? That&#8217;s value right there.</li><li><strong>Key contacts, referrals, recommendations and testimonials—</strong>Are you reaching people and are they telling others about you? What do people say about you behind your back? Will people publicly connect their name, and reputation, to yours?</li></ul><h3>Closing Thoughts&#8230;</h3><p>I know how frustrating it is when we say things in interviews like &#8220;provide value, join the conversation.&#8221; Hopefully I&#8217;ve explained a bit more about what this means and some of the steps you can use. It comes down to having the <strong>intention to really help, inform and be an excellent person to know</strong>.</p><p>A reputation is difficult and time-consuming to build, but with social media we can damage it in an instant. When you have what&#8217;s best for your community in mind, you will not go far wrong.</p><p><strong>How does this work for you? So what should you do?</p><p>In this article I&#8217;ll reveal what you need to know about Google Buzz.</p><p><strong>The good news is Google Buzz is not particularly complicated or new</strong>. You Have Google Buzz</h3><p><img class="aligncenter" src="http://img.skitch.com/20100301-g2qniekxpjpr4hne5u7s1y5w3s.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="399" /></p><p>If you have an existing Gmail account, you&#8217;re likely either all ready to go or about to be. Google Apps email users are still waiting, unfortunately.</p><p>Luckily for me I already had a Gmail account from a while ago that was still working. To get started, you&#8217;re<a href="http://mail.google.com" target="_blank"> going to need that Gmail account</a>, even if you only want it for Buzz.</p><h3>#2: Get Your Personal Profile</h3><p><img class="aligncenter" src="http://img.skitch.com/20100301-xyr1ddahci8fai421wj63ypdhg.jpg" alt="" width="470" height="270" /></p><p>It seems that <strong>Google Profiles will be more important going forward</strong>.  Profiles is the other service that&#8217;s heavily tied into Buzz. <a href="http://www.google.com/profiles/chris.garrett" target="_blank">You can find mine and fill out your own here</a>.</p><h3>#3: If You Use Facebook, Buzz Will Be Familiar</h3><h3><img class="aligncenter" src="http://img.skitch.com/20100301-mt3p1wwac7ec7rig8px2bai6a8.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="215" /></h3><p>As mentioned above, it&#8217;s very much like FriendFeed and Facebook. <strong></strong></p><p><strong>You add status update messages, links and photographs, and people can comment on them or &#8220;like&#8221; them</strong>. You can comment and like other folks&#8217; stuff in return. It&#8217;s all very easy.</p><h3>#4: Import Your Other Social Sites</h3><p><img class="aligncenter" src="http://img.skitch.com/20100301-x182r6d5st151ybmdxaif95t79.jpg" alt="" width="470" height="527" /></p><p>In addition to posting links and messages, <strong>you can import your blog posts and photographs</strong>. <strong>You can even import your tweets</strong>.</p><p>That&#8217;s how I find most people are using the service right now. They&#8217;re importing their other stuff and spending just a few minutes in conversation and so on, while still dedicating most of their time to Twitter and Facebook.</p><h3>#5: Listen and Friend First</h3><p><img class="aligncenter" src="http://img.skitch.com/20100301-rng5scjsb3qmm4sdjumjt6e1gw.jpg" alt="" width="480" height="537" /></p><p><strong>While you <em>can</em> import all your other content, it might be worth holding off</strong>.</p><p>Add your friends, browse around and get familiar with the service before rushing headlong into importing all your stuff. Some people are already unfollowing &#8220;noisy&#8221; people.</p><p>It&#8217;s going to be a while before the &#8220;rules&#8221; of this community are ironed out. <strong>The best use you can make of it right now is connecting, conversation, and finding cool content</strong>.</p><p>Interestingly, while most excitement is about Google SEO and sharing content, a lot of people are complaining that conversation threads are moving off blogs and Twitter into Buzz, which makes it a whole new important place to<em> listen to what people are saying</em>.</p><h3>What I Like About Google Buzz&#8230;</h3><ol><li>Buzz is lending itself to <strong>real in-depth conversation threads (like in FriendFeed), rather than fleeting but snappy chats like in Twitter</strong>.</li><li>Better signal-to-noise ratio. So far <strong>it is growing like Facebook without the &#8220;Farmville&#8221; rubbish</strong>.</li><li>It&#8217;s all very familiar &#8230; but does that mean Google has no innovation in Buzz?</li></ol><p>So far those three items do not add up to a hugely compelling reason to make this your primary social tool, but it is worth a look.</p><p><em><strong>What do you think about Google Buzz so far? Traffic translates into:</p><ul><li>Attention, engagement, conversation and recognition</li><li>Spreading your message far and wide</li><li>Prospects and subscriber opt-ins</li><li>Customers, increased sales and leads</li><li>Media and interviews, which lead to more attention</li></ul><p>&#8230; and last but not least, an ego boost.</p><p>In a <a href="../9-ways-to-get-more-from-twitter/" target="_blank">previous article here</a> I mentioned the many benefits  of Twitter for your business. Now <strong>here are seven key points you need  to know if you want to get more targeted traffic from Twitter</strong>:<span id="more-1749"></span></p><p><img src="http://cdn.socialmediaexaminer.com/images/cg20100129-dx74fkqnbfrfigsssum3sr6tex.png?9d7bd4" alt="" width="480" height="298" /></p><h3>#1: Know your audience</h3><p>Growing your traffic always starts with your audience if you want to do it right. <strong>Untargeted, uninterested &#8220;hits&#8221; are a waste of time and resources</strong> at worst, and at best just pure vanity.</p><ul><li>What does your audience want and need?</li><li>How do they like it delivered?</li><li>Which topics are on their minds right now?</li><li>Are there trends that are growing in popularity?</li><li>How do these folks speak? What words and phrases do they use?</li></ul><p>This means that<strong> driving traffic starts with listening and observing</strong>. Get to know your target so you can most efficiently engage them.</p><p>Twitter has a tool for this. <strong>Use</strong><strong> <a href="http://search.twitter.com" target="_blank">search.twitter.com</a> to find what people in your niche are talking about</strong> and follow some of their conversations.</p><p>Once you get an idea of what people are interested in, join in those conversations and talk to people.</p><h3>#2: Get the &#8220;right&#8221; followers</h3><p>So much rubbish is thrown around about how to grow your follower count that it makes it seem that the <em>number</em> is all that matters. Wrong!</p><p>You need people to want to hear what you have to say. This means you do NOT want people who auto-follow because they are either:</p><ol><li>Robots and not real human beings (e.g., spam software, people trying to inflate their follower count, scrapers)</li><li>Not actually reading your tweets and just following to allow you to DM them</li></ol><p>The <strong>followers you most want are those who follow you because they are interested and think they will get value from your tweets</strong>. These people are most likely to find you via:</p><ul><li>People retweeting your stuff, either within Twitter or using a TweetMeme button</li><li>Referrals from other Twitter users</li><li>Your blog; for example, your articles that say &#8220;Follow me on <a href="http://twitter.com/chrisgarrett" target="_blank">Twitter at @chrisgarrett</a> and tell me what you think,&#8221; or your sidebar Follow Me button</li><li>Other people&#8217;s blogs, when you guest post or comment</li><li>Clicking your forum signature when you participate in discussions, or your email signature</li></ul><p>Unfortunately Twitter closed off a really nice way that people used to get targeted Twitter followers. It used to be that we could &#8220;listen in&#8221; to conversations that people we followed were having, but now you have to be following both parties. This means we can&#8217;t discover new people that way. If someone puts something <em>before</em> they mention your @name it can still work, and I still occasionally get followers through that.</p><p><em>Essentially the advice is, <strong>put your Twitter name where it will be seen and encourage people to share it!</strong></em></p><h3>#3: Build engagement</h3><p>Talk to people.</p><p>Engage your followers. Don&#8217;t just see them as a passive list of eyeballs! <strong>Treat folks as human beings and you will do much better</strong> at this stuff. It is called <em>social</em> media for a reason.</p><ul><li>Ask questions</li><li>Hold conversations</li><li>Dip into others&#8217; conversations</li><li>Encourage feedback</li></ul><h3>#4: Get clicks</h3><p>So now your followers are seeing you as an interesting person and not a robotic &#8220;feed,&#8221; which means they are more likely to take notice when you tweet out a link.</p><p><strong>Tweet Valuable Links</strong></p><p>Whatever you do, <strong>don&#8217;t just tweet your own stuff.</strong> That is both selfish and boring!</p><p><strong>Get into the habit of sharing anything cool, regardless of who created it</strong>. Retweet good stuff and other people are going to be more willing to retweet yours. Tweet out fun and useful links your friends send you in email or from the news. Be known as a person who tweets good stuff.</p><p><strong>Timing</strong></p><p><strong>Not everyone is online at the same time</strong>. There is a whole world outside of your timezone, plus people have a different schedule than you. You know the feeling of confusion when you land in a foreign country. Not only have you got to adjust to local time, but also <strong>people seem to have their meals at a different time of day, shops open and close at strange hours, and business meetings seem to be held randomly</strong>. Twitter is like that, you can&#8217;t just look at a time zone converter and think people will be at their desk at a certain time.</p><ol><li>Tweet the same thing a few times, a few hours apart, to give your message several chances to be seen.</li><li><strong>Vary the times of day you tweet and monitor response</strong>.</li><li>Watch for the peaks and troughs of activity in YOUR stream (not just what works for others).</li></ol><p>I tend to aim to catch the peak times for Aussies, the EU/Brits, East Coast USA, and West Coast USA, but it is far from an exact science!</p><p><strong>Headlines</strong></p><p>There are two main driving factors that affect your chances of getting a click:</p><ol><li>Your reputation</li><li>The headline</li></ol><p>Hopefully at this point #1 is taken care of, but #2 takes some work.</p><p>First of all, <strong>use my free download <a href="http://socialmediaworkbook.com/102-headline-formulas/" target="_blank">102 Proven Headline Formulas</a> as a starting point</strong>. There are 102 fill-in-the-blank templates which ought to give you a head start on writing a compelling caption.</p><p>If you use an interesting title and it matches your audience&#8217;s wants and needs, then you are going to get clicks.</p><p><strong>Split test</strong></p><p>You might not get it right the first time, so try another variation:</p><ul><li>Phrase it as a question</li><li>Make it into a &#8220;How To&#8221; headline</li><li>Use curiosity versus just the facts</li></ul><p>A lot of this is about learning what your audience reacts to best.</p><h3>#5: Measure performance</h3><p>When you<strong> use a link-shortener with a built-in click-tracker such as <a href="http://bit.ly">bit.ly</a></strong>, you can see how well any of your links perform. This is useful for improving over time and to see which links get picked up virally.  As they say, what you measure you get more of!</p><p>With Twitter it&#8217;s not just the link clicks that YOU get, but the retweets and shares that really drive the real traffic. TweetMeme and bit.ly can give you vital reporting about how well you do, as well as your Google Analytics.</p><h3>#6: Do more of what works, but test, test, test</h3><p>When you find what works for you, do more of that. Keep in mind though that if you only do the same things you will either get the same results and not improve, or you will wear out that technique. Experiment, learn and mix it up.</p><p>Trends change, techniques improve, fads go out of fashion. Do not get stuck on rails, move and flow with your audience.</p><h3>#7: Encourage sharing</h3><p>Once you have your initial click, your job is not done!</p><p><strong>Make sure your article has a TweetMeme button</strong> so that anyone who likes what you shared can easily share it too.</p><p>If you want to get really fancy, give people an incentive to share, such as a random prize drawing for anyone who tweets your message. Of course, the message will contain a link back to you &#8230;</p><p>Once in a while it doesn&#8217;t hurt to actually <em>ask</em> for retweets. Just don&#8217;t overdo it, as you will only annoy your followers. This will make them less responsive, rather than more.</p><h3>Does it <em>really</em> work?</h3><p>Here is a case study for you. Time is money, and I don&#8217;t care about a bunch of nerds&#8217; opinions anyway</strong>.&#8221; &#8230;or something along those lines! Twitter is often the target of such criticism.</p><p>Now, reading Social Media Examiner, you might be surprised to hear that sometimes I think people who say this have a point. Sometimes.</p><p>Fact is, if you see Twitter or any other social media service as <strong>a venue for chit-chat</strong>, and that&#8217;s how you use it for hours a day, then you&#8217;re likely better off doing something more productive with your time.</p><p>On the other hand, there are ways to get a lot of <strong>value</strong> out of Twitter. As with most things, it all depends on how you use it.</p><p>We programmers have a saying: &#8220;<strong>Garbage In &#8211; Garbage Out</strong>.&#8221; This essentially means you get out what you put in. If you put in chit-chat, don&#8217;t be surprised if that&#8217;s all you see in return!<img title="More..." src="http://cdn.socialmediaexaminer.com/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gif?9d7bd4" alt="" /></p><p>Here are nine benefits I&#8217;ve personally seen through my couple of years of Twitter usage.</p><p><span id="more-1059"></span></p><h3>1. Networking connections</h3><p>Because of my Twitter network, I&#8217;ve had <strong>real conversations</strong> <strong>with people I never would have been able to reach otherwise</strong>. Also I&#8217;ve been able to form deeper connections with people in real life because of our first meeting on Twitter.</p><p>It might not last, but right now Twitter is allowing people to <strong>slip past the traditional gatekeepers</strong> that might have prevented them from talking to people they want to reach. If you think of how some executives, celebrities or just <em>very busy</em> people have their email inbox and telephone locked down tight, being able to slip 140 characters past all that and get right in front of them, well&#8230; it&#8217;s like the <strong>magic wand of networking</strong>.</p><h3>2. Traffic</h3><p>How much traffic you can generate with Twitter depends on a number of factors, not least how many <strong>engaged followers</strong> you have. &#8220;Engaged&#8221; being a key point; they have to want to hear from you, otherwise they might as well not be following.</p><p>But get the right combination of audience targeting and presentation and you can drive a great deal of traffic with Twitter, and that traffic can turn into a flood once you take into account the <strong>viral nature of the retweet</strong>. Even with humble, standard links you can easily get dozens of clicks that you might not see otherwise.</p><div class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 370px"><img src="http://img.skitch.com/20091214-rbsr4416psiup94ywt54r2si1p.png" alt="Twitter Drives Traffic" width="360" height="301" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Twitter drives traffic.</p></div><h3>3. Leads</h3><p>Twitter is fast becoming an <strong>instant referral system for business leads</strong>. Someone will ask if anyone knows a consultant/freelancer/vendor/etc. with a certain skill set or experience, and others will reply with suggestions.</p><p>If you build a strong network, you will get a good share of those referrals. I have seen it happen repeatedly, from design and programming through where to stay on vacation!</p><h3>4. Direct sales</h3><p>Obviously the end result of all those referrals is you get <strong>sales</strong>, but also sales of products and other services too. Dell is making millions of additional dollars this way.</p><p>Keep in mind that if all you do is promote your products, people will stop listening, so keep up the <strong>good content</strong> too. Make an offer and see what happens.</p><h3>5. Insights</h3><p>There are some very <strong>clever people on Twitter sharing their</strong> <strong>wisdom and expertise</strong>. Through Twitter conversations my opinions about a lot of topics have changed.</p><p>Keep an open mind and you can tap into the collected wisdom of smart people all over the globe and from many different industries and backgrounds. You can also learn a lot about what people think about the content that you put out and the service you offer.<br /> <strong> </strong></p><div class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 312px"><strong><strong><img src="http://img.skitch.com/20091214-r1eg7u1q4d2jui6sxehqa49kh9.png" alt="Ask Questions for Content" width="302" height="192" /></strong></strong><p class="wp-caption-text">Ask questions for content.</p></div><h3>6. Content</h3><p>Your Twitter followers can be a terrific source of <strong>additional valuable content</strong>. If you poll your followers about a subject, you can get ideas that you would never be able to generate yourself. This is Twitter as <strong>crowdsourcing</strong> model! All you have to do is <strong>ask the question and collate the answers</strong>. Obviously you need to ask the question in a certain way and you need to get followers&#8217; permission.</p><p>The best method for me is to say up front that I&#8217;m writing an article and would like my followers&#8217; input. Ask an <strong>open-ended question</strong> that people on Twitter would enjoy discussing outside of the article. Avoid yes/no questions, or anything that would potentially embarrass or annoy your followers to answer. If there is a chance that followers could feel they might get the answer &#8220;wrong,&#8221; they will simply not reply.</p><h3>7. Answers</h3><p>I can&#8217;t count the times that Twitter has saved me&#8230; From computer problems to which car to buy, Twitter folks have the answers you are looking for.</p><p><strong>Google search is great but it can&#8217;t answer questions like the Twitter hive mind can</strong>. Twitter understands that humans can&#8217;t put all their needs into tidy little keywords, especially when we are not good at expressing the problem! Need a certain type of software? Ask Twitter! Want to know the name of that singer who wrote the song from that movie? Ask Twitter!</p><h3>8. News</h3><p>I don&#8217;t need to list all the stories that have broken on Twitter by now; they are already well-established. Yes, <strong>there is some misinformation, but Twitter is great at clearing that up too</strong>. Twitter is now my default news feed, with the advantage that you can ask questions and get understanding.</p><h3>9. Inspiration</h3><p>Twitter messages and discussions are a constant source of <strong>inspiration</strong> and <strong>motivating ideas</strong>. Not just for content but for all kinds of things. For example, through Twitter I was inspired by people doing 5k and 10k charity runs, so I decided I wanted to start running.</p><h3>Bonus: And yes, chit-chat!</h3><p>There is nothing wrong with a bit of a chat, as long it&#8217;s not excessive or done at the expense of work. My social media activities are often a break from work; coffee and a chat can be a great way to recharge your batteries. Add that the technology is changing all the time.  It can seem impossible to keep up [...]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignright" style="margin-left: 5px;margin-right: 5px" src="http://cdn.socialmediaexaminer.com/images/how-to-pose.png?9d7bd4" alt="" width="190" height="166" />One of the big concerns about using social media for business and marketing is time. <strong>Social media activities do pose a risk of drawing you in and taking up a huge amount of your day</strong> just interacting with people.</p><p>Add that the technology is changing all the time.  It can seem impossible to keep up with all the tools, software, techniques, etiquette, and social media best practices.</p><p><strong>It&#8217;s hardly surprising that people are looking to social media consultants, agencies and contractors to take on their social media activity. </strong>But should you? Let&#8217;s explore this.<span id="more-813"></span></p><h3>The Pros and Cons of Outsourcing Social Media</h3><p>Getting outside help is a good idea, especially if it keeps you from making blunders which could negatively impact your image and reputation. It can also help you short cut the route from absolutely square one to gaining the benefits and return on investment that you look for.</p><p><img class="alignright" src="http://img.skitch.com/20091116-xcgucr4a99r3is9k67b6r1m7sf.png" alt="" width="252" height="217" />There is a danger though in that many companies are not just looking for help but offloading all their activity onto an outside agency who is <em>not integrated into the company but still representing them in social media.</em></p><p>This might seem strange to see coming from a social media consultant. You would think perhaps that I would be all in favor in social media gurus getting more paid work. Actually, I see it as a problem and I think it is the consultants job to help clients draw the line.</p><p><strong>Consultants, I feel, should focus on training you or your in house staff</strong>, or helping you recruit someone with appropriate skills who can join the company and learn its culture and processes. In my view the consultants job is to get the company to the point where the consultant is hardly needed any more, apart from to be on call when there is a question or issue that needs their help, or when there are new developments and changes that need to be brought to the clients attention.</p><p><strong>Get help, coaching and advice? Yes, of course. Would I suggest you Outsource everything? No.</strong></p><p>Now, don&#8217;t get me wrong, not all outsourcing is bad, and I am fully aware that your time is likely precious, scarce and in demand!</p><h3>Points to Consider:</h3><ul><li><strong>External people do not have all the facts</strong> &#8211; There is a limit to how much you can train someone who is outside your organization and more than likely sat in an entirely different building. If they are constantly checking information and requesting answers, how much time are you going to save?</li><li><strong>You could be locked in or even held hostage</strong> &#8211; The deeper you get into outsourcing the harder it might become to extricate yourself and take it in house. Can you be sure that if the relationship with your outsourcer goes bad that you can continue as if nothing has happened? You might find your following is not your audience at all, or that with a few clicks they can make you look very bad indeed.</li><li><strong>Outsourcers are not empowered to make decisions or take action </strong>- If someone contacts someone within your organization with a problem they can usually get the issue sorted pretty quickly. An outsourcer on the other hand might have limited options or be little help outside of their &#8220;script&#8221;.</li><li><strong>Company culture should be communicated accurately</strong> &#8211; It is hard to communicate a company culture that you are not part of.</li><li><strong>Internal staff have more motivation</strong> &#8211; When you work for a company you feel more ownership and loyalty than someone who is outside and detached.</li><li><strong>Industry terms and details can confuse outsourcers</strong> &#8211; Customers of the company, media contacts and real niche geeks will all use the industry jargon and shorthand. How much of this can the outsourcer pick up, and will they be convincing?</li><li><strong>A large benefit of social media is networking</strong> &#8211; If someone is only there to look like they are engaging a niche, then your company will not get the full networking benefits that social media provides. Do you hire an actor to go to industry events and exhibitions for you?</li><li><strong>You might risk your brand on the communication of a freelancer </strong>- Can your outsourcer be trusted to say and do the right thing when it counts?</li></ul><p>OK, it might seem like I am being overly negative and pessimistic, but there are some areas that are pretty safe to outsource provided you monitor and manage the situation well:</p><h3>What Can You Safely Outsource?</h3><ol><li><strong>Content formatting and editing</strong> &#8211; You might not be the best when it comes to grammar and design, but have something to say. That&#8217;s fine, get someone to take on the polishing provided you communicate using your own voice.</li><li><strong>Friend Requests</strong> &#8211; There is nothing wrong with having an assistant filter out the obvious junk from your following, lists, friend requests, networking contacts and so on before you give them the final approval.</li><li><strong>Research Content</strong> &#8211; You might find an outsourcer can find information faster and higher quality.</li><li><strong>Bookmarking Submissions</strong> &#8211; Repetitive tasks where you are not dealing with people can be handled by an assistant or software, providing you stick to the service rules and only contribute good valuable content.</li><li><strong>Audio and video editing</strong> &#8211; If your multimedia abilities start and end with hitting the big red record button, no worries &#8211; get a professional to tidy, enhance and add effects. They can advise you on how to make the best of what you have too.</li><li><strong>Content uploads</strong> &#8211; Your time is best served adding to your bottom line, not watching progress bars!</li><li><strong>Brand monitoring</strong> &#8211; Rather than sit watching reports and streams of search results, have someone else monitor your brand mentions and jump in to respond as and when necessary.</li><li><strong>Transcriptions</strong> &#8211; If you work best with your voice rather than writing, speak and record and get your content transcribed. The audio can be used as a podcast and the written version can be used in blog posts or as social media responses.</li><li><strong>Blog and fan page housekeeping</strong> &#8211; Deleting spam, checking links, handling competition entries, and so on, can all be given over to an assistant.</li><li><strong>Software and IT management </strong>- Get someone with technical skills to look after your software upgrades, data backups, security, and so on and you will be able to relax knowing it is all taken care of.</li></ol><h3>Bottom line: <em>Avoid outsourcing your <span style="text-decoration: underline;">relationships</span></em>.</h3><p>Where outsourcing works best is when a personal response is not necessary, when anyone can follow a simple system or where the task is taking your work and enhancing it. It is at its worst when the experience feels fabricated, deceptive or dismissive.</p><p><strong>So what is the answer?</strong></p><p>In my view the best answer is to either train someone in house in social media with ongoing support, or bring someone in with the appropriate skills, a passion for your product, service or niche, and make them part of your organization with important contacts on speed dial for when anything out of the ordinary happens.</p><p><strong>Do you outsource any part of your social media activities? Social media [...]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><script type="text/javascript"></script><img class="alignright" style="margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;" title="How to" src="http://cdn.socialmediaexaminer.com/images/how-to-pose.png?9d7bd4" alt="" width="190" height="166" />One of the major objections I hear about social media is about time.</p><p>Do any of these sound familiar? &#8220;Who has time?&#8221; &#8220;You expect me to do all this on top of my normal duties?&#8221; &#8220;How do you fit everything in?&#8221; &#8230; and so on.</p><p>I am not going to lie to you.<strong> Social media does take time</strong>. In fact, time is going to be one of your major hidden costs of doing business on the Internet.  And for some of us, that time could be wasted if we are not careful.</p><p>You need to watch where your time goes to ensure you&#8217;re spending it efficiently and with the desired impact.  Here are five tips to help you.<span id="more-495"></span></p><h3>#1: Spend Your Time Intentionally</h3><p><img class="alignright" src="http://cdn.socialmediaexaminer.com/images/9clocks.png?9d7bd4" alt="" width="278" height="278" />It&#8217;s all too easy to just chit chat, browse and surf, get distracted or feel like we are making progress when really we are avoiding work and using social media &#8220;engagement and interaction&#8221; as an excuse to procrastinate. <strong>There are good conversations and wasteful conversations and you need to decide which is which</strong>.</p><p>Consider a face-to-face networking event. Do you spend all of your time speaking to one person at that event about the weather, or do you spread yourself around a bit and find new and interesting people to connect with? Are you just hanging out or do you <strong>direct your efforts toward a precise tactical aim or specific goal</strong>?</p><p><em><strong>You need to know what you are doing and how you are going to measure your success. </strong></em></p><p>How does this help you find time? Well, most businesses and individuals already allocate time for marketing, networking and research. If you know that your social media activities come in under one of those headings, and your efforts in social media are going to achieve equal or better results to other things you could do under those headings, then you are equipped to carve out time to try social media instead.</p><h3>#2: Carve Out Time Where Social Media Is More Efficient</h3><p><strong>Because of my social media efforts, I no longer have to pitch, write proposals or go to sales meetings</strong>. I have never had to cold-call for my own business, and I do not write competitive bids.</p><p><em><strong>How much time could you save if you didn&#8217;t have to do this kind of sales lead generation or closing? </strong></em></p><p>In my previous job, I would have to spend more than six hours in a car just so I could go to one 30-minute sales presentation competing with several other companies with very little differentiation between us. Not only was it soul-destroying and a colossal waste of time, it was actually very ineffective.</p><p>I am not saying you will be able to 100% replace your old way of doing things with social media right away, and I would not suggest that is wise even if you could. But you should be able to <strong>take an hour or two out of a week to test social media and see how the results look</strong>. In fact, combining approaches usually works best, as each technique and medium compounds the results of the others. <strong>Reaching prospects through a multi-channel approach is normally much better than the sum of the parts</strong>.</p><p>The great thing about social media is you can pretty much get involved anywhere and any time.</p><h3>#3: Use &#8220;Dead&#8221; Time</h3><p>How much time do you spend just waiting? I was recently at a conference in Las Vegas and because of the long-haul nature of the travel and the fact that I would be alone much of the time, <strong>I did a lot of hanging around and waiting, which I filled with social media</strong>. Just think of your average business trip&#8230; What do you spend a lot of time doing?</p><ul><li>Flights</li><li>Taxis</li><li>Queues</li><li>Departure lounges</li><li>Restaurants</li><li>Meetings</li><li>Hotels</li><li>&#8230;?</li></ul><p>If, however, you have an Internet-connected laptop or smart phone, you can at least <strong>use some of this time to stay connected</strong>, <strong>engage with people</strong>, <strong>write some content</strong> or otherwise go from &#8220;hanging around&#8221; to being semi-productive. If nothing else, you will feel like you are not all alone in the world!</p><p>How long does it take to check your messages and send out a tweet, status update, check out a link, or answer a question? Seconds? Minutes at most?</p><p><em><strong>How many times during the day do you get the odd 10 minutes where you are simply waiting?</strong></em></p><p>Even at my desk I have to sit and wait, watching progress bars as something calculates, prints, renders or uploads. Those are prime &#8220;check what is happening in social media&#8221; times!</p><p>What if you find you have more than a few minutes to spare?</p><h3>#4: Escape, Bulk-Produce, Store Up and Schedule</h3><p>On those occasions <strong>when you have a good chunk of time, make the best possible use of that time and get a power hour of content produced</strong>.</p><ul><li><strong>Outline and write a set of blog posts to go out later</strong> when you are too busy</li><li><strong>Brainstorm and create ideas</strong>, <a href="http://www.cogniview.com/convert-pdf-to-excel/post/using-mind-maps-for-creativity-note-taking-and-productivity/">mind map your thoughts</a> and generate headlines</li><li><strong>Plan for the future</strong>, write up an editorial calendar, &#8220;most like to meet&#8221; list or line up meetings with people with whom you have lost contact</li><li><strong>Get organized </strong>and make your week more efficient with tasks, to-dos, filing and an empty inbox</li><li><strong>Write out some interesting tweets to go out over the next week</strong> so you only have to check in and reply each day</li></ul><p>One of my friends &#8220;escapes&#8221; to the coffee shop a couple of times a week and does all his content creation and planning for that week in those few concentrated hours. <strong>Being out of the office with zero interruptions </strong>(other than the constant stream of fresh latte) <strong>means he can bang out several quality items and his brain cooperates</strong>, rather than fights against his productivity with distractions and&#8230; Ooh, shiny!</p><h3>#5: Just Relax</h3><p>My last point is that this is not meant to be a chore. Nobody is testing you, tracking your use of time or holding you to any grading system. It should be useful and it should be fun!</p><p>Aim to build a reputation for being helpful and providing value, and most of all being a real human being. Then people will be much more forgiving and understanding. You do not need to be perfect.</p><p><em><strong>If you do not post an article this week, so what? Your Twitter followers might be concerned if you do not appear for a few days, but they are not going to start saying bad things about you if you are too busy to tweet!</strong></em></p><p>For me, social media is primarily social. It is my coffee break. Yes, I do find it a very effective set of tools for my business, but I also deeply appreciate the people who are at the other end of those avatars and tools. <strong>If you keep relationships foremost in your mind and do not treat social media as something you <em>have to do or else</em>, you will have much greater success at it!</strong></p><p style="text-align: left;"><strong>What do you think? </strong>Have you struggled to find time? If you do write a killer headline then you will get more clicks, more bookmarks, and your readers will be compelled to share it with their friends and contacts.</p><h3><em>Creating Compelling Headlines</em></h3><p>Take a look at the last article you wrote that did spectacularly well (or if you do not have a great example, choose a disaster).</p><ul><li><strong>Does it grab attention?</strong> The first job you have to get right when producing a new article is to get it read, and your first task toward getting your article read is grabbing the reader&#8217;s attention.</li><li><strong>Will it target a particular audience?</strong> We are largely driven by self-interest and our brains are wired to look out and listen for any message that addresses us. If your headline identifies a target group specifically, then that group, if they have an affinity for it, will take notice. Be careful though, this can backfire!</li><li><strong>Is it <em>specific?</em> </strong>Highly specific approaches work much better to draw attention and create belief than generic and vague statements that can come across as untrustworthy. Rather than say &#8220;get great results&#8221; say &#8220;achieve 147.2% increase in profits with this simple tweak.&#8221;</li><li><strong>Are you generating a great deal of curiosity?</strong> What is going to get the reader not only to take notice but also take action? You need to give him or her a good reason to keep reading past the headline into the full article, and this is where curiosity comes in. Create a feeling of incompleteness; hold off on the punch line, so the reader has to find the answer to feel satisfied.</li><li><strong>Is the headline promising powerful benefits?</strong> Does your headline answer &#8220;So what?&#8221; Above all, there has to be a payoff. Your readers need to know what is in it for them, why should they care.</li></ul><h3>5 Types of Headline</h3><p>The standard social media headline types tend toward the following categories:</p><ol><li><strong>News</strong>—Particularly <em>breaking</em> news, is very popular. Announce something, share a piece of gossip, and let people know what is happening now. Social news has made traditional news media look slow and dated because by the time the news has spread around the social sites, mainstream media is only just picking it up. The downside of this, of course, is that your content is not going to be perceived as evergreen—there will always be something newer, shinier, and trendier. For example: &#8220;Breaking News: White House Moves to Ban Bacon&#8221;</li><li><strong>Goals</strong>—Offer a way to achieve a goal, get more, be more powerful, wealthy, attractive, healthier… whole magazines are full of this stuff. Just take a look next time you are at the supermarket checkout. For example: &#8220;101 Tried and Tested Dating Secrets to Win the Partner of Your Dreams&#8221;</li><li><strong>Problems</strong>—The flipside to the goal is the problem. Fear sells just as well as positives; just ask the newspapers. The economy, health, worries about global politics, you name it. For example: &#8220;Finally! Make Your Computer Virus-Free With Open-Source Software&#8221;</li><li><strong>How-to</strong>—Share a technique, tutorial, recipe or formula to achieve something practical and beneficial. It is kind of the same as the goal, but rather than a dream, it gives you the steps to create something in reality. For example: &#8220;How to Win Friends and Influence People&#8221;</li><li><strong>Entertaining</strong>—Social media is full of pure entertainment. It might be a funny video, a cute picture, a joke or even a link to an accidentally funny forum thread. This is the coffee break content that social media was built upon. For example: &#8220;Nasty or Nice? Take The Ultimate Personality Test&#8221;</li></ol><p>Most of all, you need to trigger an emotional reaction. Remember we do not just want &#8220;interest,&#8221; we want the reader to take an <em>action</em>—even if that action is just to hit the vote-up button.</p><h3>Emotional Hot Buttons</h3><p>If you want to really draw attention and get your readers to take action, even if it is only to comment or pass along your link to their friends, you need to grab them where it counts: show empathy and make them feel. Can you get your reader to laugh, cry, or shout at their screen? Take a tip from Hollywood and move your audience emotionally using these hot buttons.</p><ol><li><strong>Boost and Slam</strong>—What is the best/worst/most/least? Compare and contrast, particularly if you can combine with Contrary (see #10).</li><li><strong>Laugh, Cheer, Snigger or Cry</strong>—Human interest that tugs the heartstrings always works. Especially when you combine weep, snigger and cheer. Just ask Susan Boyle.</li><li><strong>Outrage, Anger, and Righteous Indignation</strong>—Listen to talk radio or the talking heads and their jabbing fingers on any cable news network.</li><li><strong>Fear, Scams, Problems and Looming Disasters</strong>—Be afraid, get clicks.</li><li><strong>Sexy, Cute and Attractive</strong>—Sex sells. Lust draws attention.</li><li><strong>Divide and Conquer (Us versus Them)</strong>—Polarize your audience, get attention.
